They fall
Crunching beneath hurried footsteps,
Diving under the edges of rakes
They drift to the ground.
Red and orange
melded together
with occasional hints of green
that has not yet faded.
Scattering in the wind,
freezing in the frosty morning.
They blanket the grass,
Coat the sidewalk
flop onto the hood of a car driving past
Tumbling downstream
flashing yellow and brown
skirting around the rocks
that jut out of the stream
Leaving the trees barren
with knobby arms sticking every which way
letting icicles hang
instead of the colored
flying
leaves.
