Innocence

My heart breaks
when I see a young person
with so much light in their eyes
and so much love in their hearts.
My heart breaks for them,
because I know that
this world will destroy them.
This world, this society,
will pick at them,
piece by piece,
until they are nothing.
Until they are just broken pieces
that can never be fixed or healed.
One day,
they will look in the mirror,
and they will see someone they don't even recognise,
they will see the person who this world made.
It won't be them anymore,
only the cocoon of what they used to be
before they grew up
and saw the world and the people in it for what they truly were.
And thus the cycle continues...
