I look up;
I see stars:
Infinite stars,
Infinite planets,
Infinite possibilities.
Then I look down
And I see a world with no possibilities,
No stars;
And I know, in a hundred years
There will be no world,
No air to breathe,
No people to love.
And I will look down;
And I will see destruction,
Corpses and carnage,
I will see illnesses never cured
People never freed,
Poems written by children with futures,
Infinite futures.
Again, I will look up
I will see aliens,
People we never believed in
People with living worlds and beating hearts.
Now they will look down
At the destruction,
Corpses and carnage.
Yet
They see robots,
Battered hulls,
Silicone lungs,
Top notch brains.
They see schools,
Battered bricks,
Broken glass,
Top notch brains.
They see me,
A child,
Writing a poem about their future,
A top notch brain.
They will say:
"Who were these people?"
"What did they want?"
And I will say:
There are robots called curiosity
Books called hope
People called faith
Maybe that's what they want,
Maybe that's who they were.
And they will smile and they will leave
And I will write.
Again in a hundred years,
They will come,
They will ask:
"Who were these people?"
"What did they want?"
And I will say:
There are robots called curiosity
Books called hope
People called faith
But they will not leave,
"And you?"
"What are you called? What do you want?"
So I will smile and I will leave.
And in a hundred years,
If they ask:
"Who were these people?"
"What did they want?"
I hope they read this,
Because there are robots called curiosity,
Books called hope,
People called faith
And poets called truth.
Because this is what we are
And this is what we want.
