set her at ease for a while

of loved ones, causing pain untold
realizing, then, what was ahead
as he kneeled close beside her bed
his eyes reflected his heart's pain
as he knew one choice remained
to save his love from her own heart
bringing her back to a new start
or to lay her hand on the bed
and say goodbye as he kissed her head
it tore him apart, that he couldn't have both
and yet there was no way to make it so
he begged his love would forgive him
for the decision he would make then
his tears soaked her wedding ring
as she held on by but a string
this was the last time he would gaze
at his sweet angel, as they parted ways
he loved her more than he loved anyone
and he knew this couldn't be undone
he had to choose one: life or death
who would breathe their final breath
so he chose, and breathe they did
burdened by pain never to be rid
they lived their life, never to forget
the choice he made and what it upset
the sorrow of losing the one they loved
only to meet when they rejoined above
the harsh pain was all too real
shrouded in darkness, it couldn't be healed
but thankfulness was always present
even when days were unpleasant
for, they knew that one day
they would meet again and together they'd stay
