18- Please Stay
We didn't talk about that matter again.
I didn't probe him anymore. He was clearly uncomfortable upon being found out like this.
Usually, I would have used this situation to get one up on him. But seeing that he was so considerate about my issue with silent treatment, I thought I would just return the favour this once. I could do at least this much. For once.
"I don't think you need to do this," he said as he came out after changing his clothes.
I looked at what he was referring to and saw that I was folding the blanket and tidying up the bed, yet again.
"Ah yes! Sorry," I scratched my head sheepishly.
I really need to get rid of this habit.
"Are you ready to move out?" I asked, trying to change the topic before he could think more of my actions.
"Yeah."
Rehaan lost his confidence slowly, one level after the other. As soon as we got out of the room, he went totally silent. All the remarks, questions, everything came to an end. His shoulders dropped as we left the familiar corridor. His walk slowed down as soon as we got out of the lift and came to the ground floor. He was quietly following me as a lost puppy until we reached the entrance/exit door, but he completely froze as soon as we stepped a foot out of the hospital.
Although I noticed all these, I kept silent. I looked here and there towards the parking lot, making it seem I wasn't aware of his mental crisis, while I patiently waited for him to gather courage.
Something suddenly touched my last finger, startling the hell out of me. Wide-eyed, I turned to see Rehaan hastily removing his hand away from me.
"So...rry," he stuttered, looking shocked by his own actions.
Smiling at him softly, I blinked my eyes in reassurance, before holding out my hand for him to take.
He looked at my hand and then at my face, twice. Hesitating and contemplating it, before he made the decision. He slowly brought his hand to hold mine slightly. Chuckling, I moved my hand a bit to hold his properly and tightly.
"It's okay," I said in a quiet voice, before gesturing to him to walk ahead.
He heaved out a huge sigh, before nodding.
"Aren't we going to the parking lot?" He asked, when he noticed that I was going directly towards the main road.
"Why will we go there?" I scratched the back of my head. "We don't have a car parked."
"But I do have a car."
"You also have a wound on your head." I reminded him.
He narrowed his eyes at me, his expression screaming, 'Seriously?!'
"I don't know how to drive and your driver has already resigned," I informed him, before he could ask.
"You must be joking," he said, not really believing me.
"I am not."
"In this day and age, you don't know how to drive, wow!" He exclaimed, throwing his hands up in the air.
"Not everyone has the time and money to learn, you fool." I scowled, irritated at his reaction.
But at least his fear has left while he is focused on making fun of me.
"You weren't joking. You seriously don't know how to drive." He confirmed it once again, making me roll my eyes at him. "Wait! Did you make me drive you around everywhere in the past?"
This was my turn to narrow my eyes at him. He raised his eyebrows, actually waiting for my answer.
"No you didn't. You never, ever, drove me around." I said, highlighting the word 'never.'
"Then?" He asked, before answering his own question. "Oh! Driver uncle must have driven you around."
I rolled my eyes, not even bothering to correct him and ruin his eureka moment.
"But he resigned. How are you traveling now?"
I cursed under my breath, tired of his nonsensical questions.
Problems of rich annoying kids. Public Transportation, you idiot!
I pointed out my fingers one after the other, and with every finger I answered him, "Bus, cabs, rickshaws, trains, and last but the most effective one, my legs."
"Legs?" He asked, looking utterly confused.
"I walk," I deadpanned.
"Oh!"
"Yes."
"Now if you are done querying me, can we go and find a cab? It's scorching hot outside."
He was about to answer, but then his attention moved towards the cab which was about to get away. Completely ignoring my presence, he ran towards it, waving his hands to stop the cab.
My mouth was left hung open as I looked at his running figure in shock. Fearing that he would leave me alone here, I ran after him yelling at him to wait for me.
"Thank God, you are still here," I said, while breathing out heavily, when I finally reached towards him and the cab.
I had been so busy concentrating on my breathing that it took me a few seconds to understand the somber atmosphere.
"What's wrong?" I asked in concern, after seeing his pale face and watery eyes.
"My address?" He asked in a barely audible voice.
He didn't know. He didn't remember his own address.
I closed my eyes as the reality dawned upon me. I gulped, knowing I couldn't even imagine the pain he was going through.
He looked down at his shoes, while the driver asked angrily if we really wanted to go or he should leave.
"No, no, no, we are coming." I hurriedly told the address to the driver.
Gently pushing Rehaan into the car, I ran towards the other side of the door, and got inside.
Rehaan had a faraway look in his eyes as he stared out of the window. I tried to speak out something to make light of the situation, but nothing came out of my mouth. Hence, we just sat there silently for almost half of the ride, until my phone rang.
"Yes, Ananya Di. No, not yet. Rehaan just got discharged. I will go later. Yeah, don't worry, I have formal clothes..."
From the side eye, I noticed Rehaan's leg bouncing anxiously more and more as my conversation with Ananya Di continued. Noticing his state, I ended the call early. "Di, I will call you back later. We will talk freely then. Bye."
"Are you leaving today as well?" He asked in a small, hesitant voice as soon as I ended my call.
"Hmm? Oh that! Don't worry, I won't leave right away. I will help you adjust at home properly before leaving," I said in a reassuring tone.
"Is it...is it important to go today?" He asked, looking at me with hopeful eyes.
I was stunned to be honest, not by his question but because of the desperation in his eyes.
"Can you not go today?" He requested, looking really scared. "Please stay with me. I can talk to your boss if you want," he suggested earnestly.
You are my boss. Rather, were my boss.
"Please. I will even compensate in case you will lose money for not going today."
I need to have a job for me to lose money from not going.
Not being able to handle this side of him, I used my full power to turn him into his usual mode. "Are you sure you want me there with you? Seeing that you are suspicious of me, shouldn't you be trying to get away from me?
"There were many people in the hospital. But at home, we will be alone. I can hurt you." I threw out the bait.
He scoffed, rolling his eye at me.
And he caught the bait. Yes!
"If you did hurt me, then I am sure it was because you had taken me by surprise. There's no way you can do anything when I am alert and cautious. You just don't have that kind of strength."
I pouted as he looked down on my strength, but then I looked at both of our bodies and knew he was right. "That's true, unfortunately." I made a face at the stupid reality.
"But still, shouldn't you stay away from the one who might have potentially harmed you?" I raised my eyebrows. "You should actually be running the other way round."
"And what will I do after running away from you?" He asked, the sadness returning in his eyes. "I can't even reach my own house without your help."
"That's...that's...," I stumbled, not knowing what to say.
"It's not like I have tons of people hovering around to help me. Heck, no one visited me in the hospital. Not even a formal visit from some colleague. That says a lot about me, doesn't it," he said in a self-depreciating tone.
"Muskaan, even if I am annoying, please bear with me, please stay today," he pleaded, his voice cracking at the end.
"Rehaan," I muttered, shaking my head at him to stop pleading. But before I could assure him that I would stay, his spoke out,
"Suspect or not, You are the only one I have by my side in this unknown world."
