14- Insufferable, infuriating, Jerk

What did I do?

How did I end up making him scared of me? Everything was okay until I went to the interview. Agreed that he was suspicious of me at times, but scared...never.

What changed?

"Re...haan..?" My voice was shaky and hesitant. Seeing him frightened liked that scared me even more.

"I am fine. Don't read too much in this," he said in a dismissive tone.

"I already saw it. And it won't just disappear from my mind just because you order me to." I rolled my eyes, coming back to my normal posture and tone, so that he wouldn't feel too uncomfortable about what happened.

Just because I don't want him to feel uncomfortable, it doesn't mean I won't probe about the situation. Hah!

"Why were you scared? Did I do something...to...," I trailed off, not knowing how to complete the question.

"You didn't," he answered promptly, like he didn't want me to over think about it even for a second. "It was just a reflex action."

I narrowed my eyes at his excuse. "Something must have happened for such a reflex to happen."

"Why can't it happen? Haven't I been suspicious of you so many times? Without any particular reason or sometimes even without me realizing it," he countered.

Argh! This frustrating guy.

"That's different."

"How is that different? If I can be suspicious of you without any reason then why can't I be scared of you?"

"But I haven't done anything to make you afraid of me!" I shouted as I clutched my hair tightly.

"Does that mean you have done something that warranties my suspicion?" He asked, looking at me with keen eyes.

It was good knowing you, Muskaan! Have a happy afterlife!

Gulping down the bile, I forced myself to look unbothered.

"Don't try to change the subject," I fake scolded him, pointing my finger at him. "Come back to the topic of you being scared."

"I don't think I am one who is trying to change the subject," he smiled smugly at me. That know-it-all bastard. "You are the one who is trying to hop on the previous conversation to avoid the current question."

"I am hopping to the past conversation, yeah? Then how about we jump to even more past- you know the time when we both sat in a complete and absolute insufferable silence." I huffed, blowing out the spare hair from my face.

"Absolute silence? With you, present in this room?" He raised his eyebrows.

My mouth was hung open at his blatant mocking. "Excuse me! I tried my best, okay? Not everyone can go on for hours without speaking."

"It wasn't even a whole minute," he mumbled under his breath.

"I heard that," I shouted, before muttering, "Bloody insufferable, infuriating, incorrigible jerk!!"

"Wha..." He mumbled.

I gritted my teeth, before yelling it out at him, "You bloody insufferable, infuriating—" I stopped short, noticing his widened eyes as he clutched his head.

I hurried towards him with panic. Placing my hand over his hands, which were holding his head, I questioned, "What's wrong? Does it hurt?"

"Let me see," I said, trying to remove his hand. "Is it because of my yelling? I am sorry."

"Infuriating, incorrigible jerk," he whispered.

"What?"

I removed my hands from his head and moved a bit back to face him. Not only to understand what he was saying but also because I realized that I unexpectedly came too close to him. Fortunately, he was too lost in himself to realize this.

"Insufferable, Infuriating, incorrigible jerk," he said it again, but this time with a wide smile.

My eyebrows furrowed at his action. "What are you—"

He excitedly held my hand, looking at me with sparkling eyes. "This has happened before."

"What?"

What seems to be your favourite question! My conscience mocked me.

"Muskaan! You have said these words to me before. I remember...I remember you saying this to me and then stomping out of the door."

"You...you remember."

His hold on my hands tightened as he nodded excitedly.

"Everything?" I asked hopefully.

"No, just this." His smile dimmed as he answered.

Obviously Muskaan! He wouldn't have been holding your hand if he had remembered everything.

"This is still great news," I said, trying to cheer him up again.

"It is." He nodded. "I didn't even have hope. I can't believe I remembered something while we were fighting. Wait! We fought...The scene I remembered right now; did it happen on the day I got hurt?"

I am doomed.

"Muskaan, did we break up on that day or a day before that?" Rehaan asked again, this time in a guarded tone.

"No, no we didn't," I lied through my teeth, taking out my sweaty hands from his hold hurriedly. It wouldn't take long for him to figure out my lie if he kept holding my hand.

Rehaan's POV

Liar

The way her eyes darted around everywhere but me, clearly showed that she was caught off guard. To top it up, she herself removed her hands hastily from my hold, giving away the impression of a guilty person. If not for her actions, it wouldn't have been so easy to catch her lie.

"Don't lie, Muskaan. I remember the entire scene. For you to tell me the truth, should I describe the surroundings or the clothes we wore when this happened?"

If eyes could shoot daggers, hers would have been the ones with fire. "I am not saying I didn't say those words," she shouted, before saying calmly, "I am just saying that we didn't fight."

"You are saying you said those words but we didn't fight," I repeated as I moved my face closer to hers so I could see her eye to eye, before I asked her sarcastically, "if not a fight then did you say those words when we were making love?"

Her breath hitched at my choice of words, and she tried to move away from me, but I held her chin gently with my fingers, stopping her from getting away, before answering.

However, it didn't take a second for her nervousness to disappear and her fierce self to come back.

"You are playing on dangerous waters, Rehaan. Don't try to do something you can't handle the consequences of," she threatened, knowing well I wouldn't be able to go further than this contact.

But I wasn't ready to lose just yet.

"Consequences, huh?" I snorted, before smirking, "Why? Are you gonna jump on me to avoid answering?"

It didn't even take a whole second for me to realize that I fucked up. The moment those words left my mouth, her eyes lost the spark in them.

"I..."

"You went too far," she whispered in a hurt tone as she tried to move away her face.

I immediately withdrew my hands, before profusely apologizing.

She stood up, saying that she would inform the doctor about my memory, all the while ignoring my apologies.

My face perked up when I noticed that she stopped just before she could open the room's door. I opened my mouth to apologize, but she spoke up first.

"Rehaan, I don't know what you think of me, but I am not going to resort to that tactic, ever."

"I know, I know. I am sorry, Muskaan. I was just playing around and...and I crossed my limits. It won't happen again."

She smiled at me, though it didn't reach her eyes. "I know you don't trust me completely, Rehaan. And I don't blame you for it either. You are stuck in a situation like that. So please go ahead and question my actions; go ahead and question my words; heck you can even question my motives. But please...," her voice broke at the end, "....please don't question my character. It is quite unbearable."

She left after that, making me feel like a jerk that I was.
