025
Back at his house, Hubert notices a slip of paper under the door. It is from the keeper of the lighthouse. The one who sees all but speaks only to those who visit him. And since Hubert visited him most recently, he gets the pleasure of notice.
Hubert sprints to his horse, shocked that he had forgotten (his brain is deteriorating). He climbs atop it, and forces it to run faster and faster through Alaque towards the cabin. All the while, his brain echoes one thought.
Not Clara. Not Clara.
At the cabin, the others gather round.
Adwin searches Flo's bed for a note (not that they have paper) or some sign as to where she has gone (not that there is any). It is dusk, and she has yet to reappear.
"It's not unlike Flo to leave," Bev points out. She twiddles her thumbs behind her back anyway. She doesn't like feeling sad or angry, and doesn't really know fear, but there is something stirring in her stomach and she wonders if this is what love feels like? Like bearing everything to someone with the constant threat of them being ripped out from beneath you, like the cruel trick of a magician involving a tablecloth and table full of items? Only Beverly feels like she is the vase atop the table, and the magician pulled out the bottom to quickly, and the whole world is topsy-turvy.
"Flo would not leave after witnessing the spectre," Maverick shakes his head back and forth. For even if Flo is reckless, she is still somewhat sensible.
"I wouldn't be so sure," it's the first think that Alvaro has gotten the courage to speak to Maverick.
"I don't think she left just for any reason," Adwin says. "Her sheets are in a pile on the floor. Since when does Flo leave her bed a mess? She might have been in a rush. Something bad-"
"Bad? What could have happened?" Beverly asks.
Mickey shrugs. "We can't be sure of anything yet. We need more information before we come to any conclusions."
At that, the door bursts open.
Hubert runs in and spots Clara, standing next to Mickey. He sprints over to her and picks her up off the ground, pulling her into the tightest of embraces. His hands dig at her with desperation, almost tearing her clothes, almost bringing their skin together.
He was right. Not Clara. Not Clara.
He snakes an arm around her, but doesn't let go. Hubert scans the others, searching their faces.
"Who was taken?" he asks, since he has not paid any attention to the other girls.
"Flo," Mickey spits, his fists curling at his sides. How could Hubert not realize?
Alvaro wants to cross the room and put a hand on Mickey's shoulder, but he doesn't want to draw any more attention to Mickey's red face than necessary.
Next to Mickey, Clara is red too. She looks around at the others, but lets herself cling to Hubert. Especially since she doesn't understand what is happening. She feels more weighed down then she did in the ocean by her dress.
"Flo's been taken," Hubert tells them, since he realizes his huff betrays him. His principle of non-interference gone out the window, all for Clara. "They think she is Ivy. They are going to perform an exorcism on her."
"Who?" Adwin asks.
"Where?" Mickey asks.
"Just the house up the road," Hubert tells them, tightening his grip on Clara.
Alvaro takes the opportunity to go grab the gun from within Maverick's mattress. As he pulls it out, Beverly approaches him from behind.
"Show me how to use the gun," she demands.
He furrows his brow, and laughs. "Are you serious?"
When Beverly nods, he rolls his eyes. He brings the gun over and hands it to Mickey, since he's done using it. "You think you can handle it, Gallego?"
As he nods, the two of them race out of the house, Maverick and Beverly in a hot pursuit.
The others stay in the house.
Clara would have run as well, if it weren't for Hubert's arm still firmly around her.
Rather than go, Adwin makes Flo's bed, hoping it is perfect for when she returns. He stokes the fire, and begins to prep some food for her, since she missed dinner. All he can do is keep idle. He isn't going to be able to help if he lets his fear paralyze him.
Flo feels herself dunked underwater. They pull the bag off her head at least, so as they pull her up and out of the water she can breathe.
The room is dark, safe for a few candles lining the space. There is a man, the priest, saying some words in French that she barely recognizes.
God. She hears that one.
One of her captors is coughing near her. Flo is gaged around the mouth, but she is still screaming. It's difficult to hear with water-clogged ears, difficult to see in the lighting. They hold her back down and shove her under the water, and she pushes back at them.
The priest continues to talk in French.
Flo stops struggling, letting the coughing attack her. She stops crying too, and takes it. Whatever they are doing to her, be it prepping to kill her or attempting to cleanse her, she will let them work. Struggling makes it worse.
The sound of glass breaking erupts from the next room. One of the men lets go of her and runs out.
Flo still doesn't struggle. It is still her against two men. She can hear shouting in the next room, but doesn't know what it is.
It is Alvaro, climbing through the busted window. He tumbles on to the ground, ignoring the ripping sound of glass pulling at his shirt. He feels himself get sliced open, but he doesn't care. He makes his way over to the front door and unlocks it, just as the man comes running out of the room Flo is kept captive in.
When the door opens, Mickey points the gun at the man.
"Gun!" he shouts. "I have gun."
Beverly doesn't wait for his reaction. Though half her body is useless, she tackles the man and slogs him in the face.
Maverick helps her pin the man down. "Go get Flo."
Alvaro doesn't need to be told twice. He bursts into the room, letting Mickey lead. He continues to translate. The priest steps back.
"You again!" Alvaro shouts. It is the man he beat up all those weeks ago for insulting Clara. Though the bruises have faded, his smirk has not.
"We need to save her from the Devil!" the man shouts back.
In that moment, Flo realizes she should recognize both men. Even though it was dark, this guy is the one who broke into their cabin and attacked Ivy.
"It was Ivy who was possessed, not me!" Flo cries.
He lets go of her and she drops to her knees. Alvaro runs to her and tries to undo her knots, but they are too tight. Instead, he pulls her behind his back.
"We have a weapon that can take you all out," Mickey says. He points the gun, hoping it looks heavy. Looks like its filled with bullets. He's got no idea how many there are and he is praying they don't have to use her.
The priest says something, and the coureur de bois repeats it in English. "We need the girl with the Devil inside her."
"She died," Mickey swallows.
Alvaro doesn't have time for this. He scoops up Flo and carries her out of the room. The adrenaline rushes through him, and so she feels as light as air. The presence of the gun still weighs down on his shoulders.
Mickey lowers the gun. Once in the next room, he gestures for Maverick to follow. Maverick tries to pull Bev off the man she has practically beaten unconscious. Together, the five of them walk back to the cabin.
Alvaro realizes that if he were holding the weapon, it would never have been lowered. Not even tonight, while they slept.
Once inside, they have Clara help Flo, who is shivering, get dressed into her old flapper dress. She feels more like a corpse than, since she is stuck in the past. She ignores the fact that it also belongs to the future.
Then, Adwin tucks her into bed. She insists that she isn't hungry, and that she just wants to sleep. She cries and doesn't care that anyone can hear her. Adwin tends to her, carefully stroking her wet hair.
After slipping the gun back into Maverick's mattress, Alvaro tends to Beverly's hand. It is broken from punching the man without a proper fist. He dressed it with the few bandages that the townspeople have provided them with.
Maverick lies down on his bed and stares up at the ceiling. Occasionally, he glances at Alvaro. He is impressed, but now is not the time. Today only serves to prove that Alvaro is a good man, while Maverick is not.
"Why didn't you come?" Mickey bites his lip, trying to hold back the roar inside him. "Someone got seriously injured, and you could've stopped it."
"I'm trying to appear impartial," Hubert argues. He wants to storm out, but this time he pauses to look at Clara. "Come with me?"
Only once before has somebody asked Clara for her permission. And just like that time, this time she says yes. She leaves the cabin with him, and Mickey jolts down.
