CHAPTER EIGHT: Tour

"Luci, my tongue's getting too dry...Can I stop now?"

I gave him my best attempt at puppy dog eyes, but the ravonet wasn't having any of it. He truly was a sadist.
"No. You'll lick until it falls off after that stunt you pulled." He replied with a glare, and I deflated, running my poor tongue across the back of yet another stamp and smacking it onto the envelope.

"Nobody told me that we weren't allowed to drink at home..." I mumbled, letting my head fall down onto my pile of stamps without much of a care. "Why isn't Asmo getting punished, then? He drank just as much as I did..."

The eldest demon seemed to breeze across the room, returning the book he had been reading to the shelf in favour of another.
"He is. I have banned him from purchasing any beauty products for a month." He responded bluntly, as though it were a befitting punishment. Though, knowing Asmodeus, it really was.

A short knock sounded at the door, and in waltzed Satan, as stoic as usual.
"I need a copy of the amended academy rules. The RAD Newspaper Club needs them to print for their next issue." His eyes slowly wandered to me, and I sat up, giving him a smile and a wave.

"Working hard or hardly working, my dude?" It was nice to see someone apart from Lucifer for a change. It had been a little under a week since Asmodeus and I had been busted, and all my free time, besides work, had been spent slurping stamps. I didn't even know somebody could write so many letters in such a short time period.

For a split second, Satan seemed to smirk, though I wasn't sure if I had imagined it or not. Lips returning to their neutral straight line, he approached me, reaching out and pulling one of the small squares from my forehead.
"Intending on mailing yourself back to the human world, are you?" He quipped, watching me grope my own face, which caused me to realise that a great deal of them had attached themselves to me.

"Hard pass. I like it here, though I wouldn't mind taking a break..." Expectingly, I turned my attention to Lucifer, who approached us with what his brother had requested, handing it over without so much as glancing towards me.
"I said a week of punishment. Your week isn't up until the clock strikes midnight, so pick up the pace."

Great. I'm gonna be tasting glue and paper for a month...

Clearing his throat, Satan adjusted the pile of papers in his arms and straightened his posture.
"Actually, I was going to bring (Y/N) with me to hand these in. She hasn't had a legitimate school tour, and she still gets hopelessly lost between classes. For her educational benefit, I'd suggest you allow me to do so."

Blinking like a moron, I was surprised that the blond was giving me a hand. We hadn't really spoken much, but I was extremely appreciative. Lucifer, however, didn't look all too convinced.
"So you believe I should let her off the hook? How would that reflect on me, hmm?"

I watched Satan's face shift into an expression that bordered on sinister as I plucked the remainder of stamps from my cheeks, curious as to how he would respond.
"Positively, I'd presume. Far better than accusations of being petty over a human having a few drinks. What'll it be, Lucifer? Duty of care, ensuring your temporary ward can safely maneuver a foreign world, or being a bully?"

It took everything in my power not to snicker as Lucifer's face fell, and I could tell he was struggling not to get angry. Finally, he clicked his tongue, waving his hand towards the both of us as he turned back to his desk.
"Fine. Take her along...just don't lose track of her. Once you return, make sure Mammon resumes his role."

He didn't have to tell me twice. Leaping up, I happily bounded after the blond demon, waiting until we were down the hall before piping up.
"Thanks, Satan! You're the best! I don't think I had any saliva left to give!" I laughed, expressing my gratitude as I skipped along beside him.

"I just wanted to piss him off, but you're welcome, I suppose." He sighed, keeping his eyes straight ahead as we reached the entrance hall. "You can go do whatever it is you do, now. I never intended on giving you any sort of tour."

Stumbling a little, my excitement lessened, but I still kept that smile of mine.
"O..oh...well, I was hoping that maybe I could still tag along..? Beel is out, and the others don't really like hanging out with me much...Asmo kind of does, but since he's cooped up in his room wailing about lotion..."

My fingers crossed themselves, and I internally pleaded that he'd accept my request. It was boring, sitting around all day when I wasn't due to work. Even if it was a typical errand, I wanted to go. The sigh that left the demon was exasperated, and if his hands hadn't been full, I was sure he would have pinched the bridge of his nose.

"As long as you tone it down and behave, I suppose you could join me." It was obvious he wasn't thrilled, and usually I'd take the hint and back off, but I was desperate for a change of scenery.
"Cross my heart, I'll be on my best behaviour!"

His immediate glare caused me to shrink down, and I mimed zipping my lips for good measure, following after him as he began to move along. He had a fast pace, and I struggled to keep up, having to almost jog.

He looks stuck up...but...I'm sure he can be nice...

Satan didn't even acknowledge me until we reached the school, barely glancing over his shoulder at me before facing front again.
"I didn't expect you to be able to keep up." Putting in an extra effort, I managed to reach his side, completely out of breath.

"Well...I'd be lost out there...if I didn't..!" I chuckled between my panting, ignoring the burn in my calves. "So, newspaper, huh? Are you a member of the club? You kinda give off president vibes." I had expected him to ignore my attempt at small talk, but he surprised me.

"No, not at all. As a member of the student council, it's my duty to work alongside them. We can't have any ridiculous rumours or misinformation spreading through what is supposed to be a reliable source." Halting by a door, Satan knocked once, stepping back as it creaked open.

A boy with ashy brown curls greeted Satan with a smile, as did a larger demon behind him.
"Ah, thank you, Satan! We can finally get the new issue out to print with this!" The former clapped his hands together before collecting the papers, but his eyes seemed to darken when he noticed my presence.

"What's this?" The larger of the two took a step closer, tongue slipping out from between his lips in a way that made me quite uncomfortable.
"Oh? A snack for the road, Satan? Or did you bring it to share?"

Yikes. Not the kind of snack I was aiming to be...

My instincts betrayed me, and I stayed put, watching them leer and begin an advance, but within seconds Satan stepped between us, one arm reaching behind to me to keep me put.
"If you so much as even jest about harming her one more time, the punishment I shall inflict will make Lucifer seem lenient. Do you understand?"

His voice was much deeper, and much more threatening than I was used to, and the two demons seemed to think the same.
"Shit..." They instantly backed off, murmuring apologies before closing the door in retreat. Unphased, Satan turned and looked down at me, face neutral.

"Why didn't you run? We can't be around you all the time, you know." Was he disappointed in me? It wouldn't be anything new, but I didn't want it to be the case. Clearing my throat, I shrugged my shoulders.
"Sorry...I, uh...felt safe with you here, I guess? Not that I expect you to save my ass all the time. If it happens again I'll be like Gump and run, Forest, run!"

My reference obviously flew right over his head, and he blinked down at me for a moment before sighing, nudging me into a walk.
"You really are an odd one. I'm not sure whether to see you as pathetic or not." I was sure my laughter was awkward, but it had stung a little, no matter how many times I had heard that in the past.

"You wouldn't be the first one. Ah, I haven't really made a great impression on anyone, have I? I either piss people off or get them in trouble." It took me a while to realise that Satan had slowed his pace to match mine, and he looked over at me instead of ignoring my existence.

"You made a decent enough impression on the demon who hired you, didn't you? You also made a pact with Beel. From where I'm standing, the only issue is conflicting cultures. You're weird to us because we're demons, and we do things differently than you humans."

Is he...trying to make me feel better? What changed?

I appreciated it, I really did, but I had to correct him. I couldn't have him getting the wrong idea.
"Actually, I'm weird to humans, too. It's honestly a lot better down here in the Devildom. Less to worry about..." Sensing he was going to question me, I coughed into my hand and slapped on a big smile, adding extra bounce to my step. "Anyway! I was wondering if I could convince you to tutor me in Devildom History? I majorly failed my last homework sheets, and I think the teacher is gonna eat me if I get low marks again..."

There it was again. That slight quirk of his lips, just barely noticeable. It made me feel like less of a burden when he did that. Turning back to face ahead, he kept his eyes on me, continuing to match my slower speed.

"I suppose we could come to some kind of arrangement..."
