Mai Miyamoto and her brother Tōru Miyamoto have been living on their own since the destruction of their village. They've lived on their own out in the woods, away from the influence of other people. One day, while Mai was out looking for food, she's attacked by rouge ninja. Trying to lead them away from her brother, a paper tag bomb goes off in front of her. Thinking she wouldn't be a problem now, the rouge ninja take everything Mai had on her and left her for died. Tōru finds his sister, and does all he can to make his sister comfortable, but Mai's injury was getting worse by the day.

One day while Tōru was taking care of Mai, their location had been found. Ninja from Konoha find the two young children, but Tōru isn't one to trust strangers so easily.

"I won't let you hurt her! Not again! All you ninja are the same!"

"Kid, we have no idea what you're talking about, but the girl there needs medical attention. Let us help her."

With great worry for his sister Tōru agrees and the two are taken to the Hidden Leaf Village. There Mai can get the medical attention she would need. It also seems that news about her got around quickly, a young hospital patient hears about the young girl with damaged eyes, and maybe these two can help each other recover in the end.
