6| daddy's girl
I fell sleep in Dad's warm arms. This time there were no unpleasant dreams. Not even dreams, actually. Just happy memories of last evening. My heart fluttered every time I saw Izzy, looking at me the way I looked at Maddy.
When my alarm finally blared, I reached out to switch it off, but someone reached it before me. I sat up and looked around. Dad.
He stayed back for me.
My eyes stung at the back. "You stayed", my voice broke.
"Of course, sweetie", he smiled as he caressed my hair.
At once I felt so glad for Dad's very existence. He was always there for me. How could I have been so naive and not noticed? Always there. Even yesterday, Dad reacted before Mom. Dad had always jumped for me before Mom.
Yes.
Yes, he had.
I feel so... I don't know!
I feel like screaming out loud
I feel like a blind man who has seen the sun for the first time.
I feel like I've been imprinted!
Ew.
No.
Yuck.
Not.
Imprinted.
Yuck.
Where did that come from, Eva?!
You ruined the moment!
I choose to ignore my previous thoughts. I focused on the happy thoughts.
Finally, I think I can quote Maddy. And a few other million people.
"Daddy's girl", I whispered.
"You bet", he grinned. I grinned back. Then I frowned.
"Don't you have to get to office?", I asked.
"Offi– What's the time? Shit", he exclaimed as he bore his eyes into the clock, as if that would change the time. I chuckled. "You can't laugh! You're in as bad a position as I am", he says with furrowed eyebrows. I looked at him, uncomprehending.
"I saw my flower pot." I cringed at that. This time he laughed and took me in his arms. "Its alright Eva", he blew into my hair.
"Sure, sure", I muttered. I felt him laugh once more.
"So, I gotta go", he started, "Get ready in twenty. I'm taking you to dance class", he ended. I stared at him wide - eyed.
"Its in the morning?! Ugh, can't they leave people in peace?", I groaned.
"Sorry darling, can't help it", he shrugged.
"Yeah, I know. Twenty, huh? Can do", I said nonchalantly.
"Good", and he left.
I looked around for a moment and then dragged myself to the washroom. Then to the closet.
"Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming", I sang to myself as I rummaged through the hangers, till I found a T-shirt. It was black and said I'm human & I'm Other in white. I felt a smile growing as I remembered my obsession of The Fifth Wave.
Evan. The definition of hotness.
And he looks like David.
Or David looks like him.
Meh... Same difference.
I tossed aside those thoughts with my night top and put the T-shirt on. I paired it with black leggings and grabbed my mint bag as I left the room.
Hair, Eva!
Stupid.
I rushed back to comb it. I quickly pulled my hair into a ponytail and darted down the stairs. Dad was already there, eating his toast.
Toast?
Since when do we have toast?
...
Since forever, Eva!
Oh, right.
I sat beside him. Mom brought my two slices and scrambled eggs.
"Did you sleep well, after...", she faltered.
After?
How could I forget...
Shut it out. Shut it out. Shut it out...
Shut up and dance with me!
...
...
Ugh!
Stupid. Irrelevant. Bloody. Thoughts.
But still, the memories of the previous night threatened to haunt me. They were ghosts in the back of my mind.
"Yeah. I'm fine, I guess", I shrugged. I got up to get to the cupboard for foil. I wrapped the toast with the eggs in between and gave a thumbs up to Dad.
"Good. So, Honey, we're leaving. I'll be dropping Eva at her class", Dad said as he got up and wiped his mouth.
"Ok, take care darling", Mom said, giving Dad a kiss as she ushered us to the door.
"Bye Mom", I called. She gave back a crooked smile. At that time, I thought about how overrated boys' crooked smiles are. We girls smile like that as well! How come authors only mention how a boy's crooked smile captivated a girl and not the other way round?
I shook off those thoughts as Dad waved to Mom from the car. I quickly walked to the car and got in. Then Dad drove off.
I ripped open the top part of the foil and started eating my toast and eggs. Dad turned in the music. He surfed through the channels, but apparently found nothing interesting. "Can you connect your phone to this thing?", Dad asked jerking his chin towards the stereo.
"Sure", and with that I fished out my phone and dug through the front of the car for the AUX cable. Once I found it, I connected my phone to the stereo. I scrolled through my phone to set the sing, and I stumbled upon It Ain't Me by Selena Gomez and Kygo. I played it and surrendered to the music.
