Chapter 23: Lonely

Mirio

"Heyyyy Tama!!" I exclaimed, beaming brightly through the FaceTime camera. I was calling Tamaki during lunch. A few of my friends gathered around to say hi, it was almost like he was the star of all the rumors going around.

We were finally accepted, especially in school. It seemed normal so far.

At least what I could tell, they all seemed so supportive of us.

"Hey Mirio," Tamaki yawned and laid on his bed, holding the camera up so I could see his ceiling.

"Tammaaa!!!" I sighed and waved at the camera, trying to get his attention. "Don't be so camera shy! Let me see your cute face!"

"Mm.." He muttered, as I could hear him kick his legs. "No..Mm..just woke up. No looking.."

The other students chuckled, watching the camera shake slightly. He got really quiet and I couldn't help but adore his mannerisms today.

"Awe..he's adorable!"

"Awkward much, haha!"

"Such a cutie-"

I sighed and smiled softly. "What if..it's just me? Will you be comfortable?"

He got quiet for a moment, before making a little thumbs up with his hand at the camera. "Mhm.."

I took a deep breath before standing up. "Guys! Give us space, yeah? We're having a moment, think what you want but we need a second-"

"Dang-"

"You're for real???"

"Hurry up, we wanna see too!"

"Alright, alright! Few minutes, tops!" I called, standing up before heading out of the cafeteria.

I opened the two front doors and shut them, turning the corner.

Finally, peace and quiet.

"Tama, we're alone now~" I teased.

"Nuhuh.."

"Yuhuh! Get your pretty face on the screen! Or I'll..hang up!"

"W-What?!"

"Mhm..C'mon, I don't care if you're a mess, I'll still love you." I say softly.

Tamaki finally turned the camera around. He..looked the same.

What was the-

Ah-

His is face was bright red, along with his ears. His hair wasn't made up and neat as I usually saw it, it looked like a mini bird nest.

He looked away, and slowly, the camera moved back up the ceiling again.

After the three days facetiming the ceiling, I finally got to see him.

And it was enough..

I didn't laugh.

I was just so relieved to be seeing him. His facial expressions, his demeanor, his fidgets and anxiety that I was used to.

"Tama..what's wrong?"

"...Mm.."

"I miss you.." He murmured softly, his sniffles heard from the other side.

I frowned slightly and wanted so desperately to wipe his tears away, but I couldn't. It was already so hard not to run over to his house and give him the biggest hug.

"Please..don't cry." I said back, the words holding a special place in my heart. "You know what I'm going to do when you're better?"

"..What.." He sniffled.

"I want to see your face when I tell you."

He shyly moved the camera back to his face, tears in his eyes as he stared at me.

There was a break in eye contact as he saw a smile on my face.

How could he be so cruel to himself like this? He's all I wanted, why was he so insecure?

"Tama..one day, you're going to lay your head in my lap and look up at me with those pretty eyes.." He sat up and lowered the phone slightly, his eyes a little unsure, and a little embarrassed.

I continued with as much effort as I could.

I ran my fingers though my hair, chuckling. "I'll run my fingers through your hair, and tell you everything is going to be okay. Because it will."

"Will it? I'd like to hear you say that in person," He teased softly, eyes sorrowful and distant. "Do..you know how lonely it is here? It..doesn't feel like home, it never has been. I have no one to talk to about the things going through my head," He shakily sighed and rubbed his eyes.

"I'm here, and I'll always be here, but you need to talk to me. What's been bothering you, we can fix it together!" I state back.

"In some messed up way..I really don't think that's possible," He fumbled with his hair as he talked. "I've never felt this lonely before, Mirio. But, before I met you, I was always alone and it was okay. But, now that I realized what I could lose..it seems this much harder to stay away."

"Ta..ma.." I took the time to think. "I miss you. I really do, just hold on. Work on what you need..to help those little negative thoughts of yours. I want you to put yourself as a priority, not me." I say back. "For me."

The doorknob rattled slightly, Tamaki's mother knocking a few times.

"Mirio..I need-"

"Promise me."

"I..will. I'll try, I'll-"

"Don't try, do it. Please, I need to hear you promise." I urged.

"Tamaki?" His mother called.

"I-" Tamaki clicked the hang up button and my screen turned dark.

"Tama? Tama?!" I exclaimed, clicking back to the screen.

Something feels wrong.

But, there wasn't much I could do.

Prom Night 7:50

I straightened my tie, accompanied by the blue suit and the patch of red roses in my hands.

I inhale a deep breath and sighed softly, a huge smile on my face.

I get to see Tama!!

The thought of him in such a small suit would make my day even better. And the biggest smile on his face.

I checked my watch, I was 10 minutes early. But, it was more than alright with me. He won't have to worry about getting there late, it was just be a peaceful experience.

Just..me and him.

Ever since our lunch call a week ago, I haven't heard from him. Not a call, a text, or a wave from his window.

I'm still worried, but now I'm here. I'm here to check up, and take him to the best night ever.

I clenched the flowers tight in my own, my heart racing into quick little thumps.

I was..nervous.

I didn't want to ruin my chances with him, I'm obnoxious, I know. And that was my fault, I'm loud. I'm stubborn. I could be a jerk sometimes.

I owe this to him.

I owe this to myself.

I'm allowed to feel all these emotions. Before, those negative emotions were pushed down and hidden.

Now I can breathe, Tama taught me that it was okay to feel these things. It's what made us human.

He accepted every part of me, and I always loved him for that.

I sighed and took a few steps to the door. There was a line of goosebumps through my arms as I raised my hand up to a fist. "Here we go."

I knocked.

Once.

Twice.

Three.

Times.

I looked down at my shoes, trying to contain my excitement. He's all mine tonight..

The door creaked open, my stomach churning. I quickly looked up and was met with his sad and tears eyes. He was dressed up at if he was going to bed, which got me more confused. "What's.."

He flinched and looked away, and I see that there's something he's trying to hide.

I reach out for his hand and held it in mine. It was cold, and distant, like we were complete strangers.

He pulled away and sniffled softly.

What's..

Tama..what's going on?..

"I thought we were going to the dance toge-"

"You've made a dumb mistake." He spat, looking up at me with a desperate expression. "Just..go away."

"Wh- Did I do something wrong?! Are you okay?!" I panicked.

Tamaki trembled and his voice started to break, bits and pieces cut off by his strangled whimpers.

"Can't.."

"Can't what?.."

"Go..go with someone else." He says, as strong as he could. "Go.."

This..doesn't make sense.

He..He..wanted to go with me.

Why would he change his mind..

I recall the memory of when we were waiting for his parents.

"Don't forget prom..okay? Just come over and take me." Tamaki teased me, making me smile.

"It's for the best..if I don't get better, how are you going to slow dance with me at prom?" He asked back.

He tilted his head, smiling. "I used to think I hated people," He chuckled and stared at me in awe. "But then, I met someone I liked. And my vision changed.."

The way he was looking at me now. So forced. So..sad.

He would never say something like this.

So vague.

So sudden.

No.

He'd look into my eyes.

He'd smile.

He wanted to go. His words exactly.

"No." I state to him, placing the flowers in his hands. "I know you too well. This..isn't you. You said to just come and take you. And that's what I'll do. I'm not leaving you alone."

Tamaki began to smile as he teared up. "R..Really?"

"Of course! Why wouldn't I?" I state softly, holding my hand out to him. "C'mon..I got the car warm..all for you."

"Mi-"

"Mirio." Tamaki's mother says softly, taking a long glance at me.

I smiled and waved. "Hey!-"

"Don't come back."

"..What?" I asked, a little hurt.

"Don't you dare come back here. Or I'll call the poilice." She spat, holding the phone up.

"I did nothing wrong!" I exclaimed.

"Talking to my son like some pervert is what you did. Get a life and stop messing with his."

"I-"

"Can you not get that through your thick skull?" She questioned, eyes glaring up into mine.

"Tama-"

"I'm sorry, but he doesn't want you." She says plainly, beginning to shut the door.

I frowned and held the door open, glaring up at her. She gasped and took steps back. "What the heck? Get out!"

"Tama!" I called desperately.

Tamaki was standing near the stairs, unable to move a muscle. He looked so scared, and so unsure.

He barely looked at me, his hands clenched into fists. As if he was fighting the urge to run away.

"Tell me! What do you want?" I asked.

"I'm calling the police!" She yelled, trying to get me away.

His eyes widened slightly at my words.

"I want to hear it from you! I want you to say that you never cared about me! I want you to deny all your feelings to me! I want to hear you say that!" I said back, tears in my eyes. "Do you love me?! Or was that a lie? Tell me, I trust you!"

"Honey, c'mon tell him." The mother grits through her teeth. "The truth. You don't like him."

"Were you using me? Was this all for nothing?" I asked again, a little calmer this time. "I need to know that the person I kissed would never treat me like garbage."

He gasped and looked at me, shaking his head quickly. "W-What? I'd never use you! I've missed you, so much!"

The father came in and assisted in the door. I grunted and used the rest of my strength, the stubborn part of me coming out.

"Then, what do you want?! I want to hear you say those three words!"

"I..I don't.." He squeaked out, before both parents tried shutting the door.

The father stepped in front of me, a displeased look on his face.

"Please!"

"I want you, Mirio." He said back, his voice shaky.

"Then, what are you waiting for?" I said softly, smiling warmly. "Like you've always done, make your own choices."

He blushed and thought for a moment, glancing upstairs.

Ramen ran over and moved in-between the door, blocking the way.

Good girl.

"Ramen?!" The father spat, grabbing the cat. He moved aside as the cat hissed and growled.

Tamaki chuckled and ran upstairs, I was almost confused to why before beaming up. He was getting his suit..wasn't he?

"Get out!" His mother yelled, before slamming the door in my face.
