Chapter 22: Better Off
Tamaki
I went to the nurse and she immediately called my parents.
I wasn't too sure what to do. All I felt was this immense relief that everything was going to be okay.
I sighed and kicked my legs nervously, thinking over a million ways this could go. My parents would keep me in that house for a while, but I had some ways to get Mirio over there.
Although..I haven't told them about our..feelings toward each other.
God..I miss him already.
"Tama?" Mirio asked, nudging my shoulder. I looked over and he smiled softly, it seemed sad but..
I smiled back, this wasn't going to be the end yet. We still had a prom to go to.
"Don't forget prom..okay? Just come over and take me." I teased.
"Darn, I can't take you now?!" Mirio pouts, laughing back.
"Noooo!"
"Tama!" He whined.
"H-Hey, you can't!"
"Tama.." Mirio said in a low whisper, his voice breaking slightly.
"Tamaki.." He held my hand close and sniffled. "I'm going to miss you too much. I know your parents won't let me come over until your better..and what if you don't ever get better?! I'll be so miserable!"
"It's for the best..if I don't get better, how are you going to slow dance with me at prom?" I asked back, kissing his cheek.
"I hate people..so much.." Mirio muttered.
"I actually- I-" I paused and placed a hand to my heart. "You know what?"
Mirio looked at me.
I tilted my head, smiling. "I used to think I hated people," I chuckled and stared at him in awe. "But then, I met someone I liked. And my vision changed.."
Mirio blinked a few times, looking away shyly as he blushed. "Awe haha.."
My eyes widened slightly, I rarely get him flustered. I almost wanted the day to last longer..just so I could see his face.
"..You're flustered-"
"No.." Mirio scoffed and chuckled a bit. "You're just too cute."
"A-Ah, no I'm not!" I exclaimed back, blushing brightly.
Mirio nudged my shoulder and held my hands in his. "A week left until prom. We could make it, together or not."
I heard the car roll up, and my parents voices talking outside. We didn't have much time..
"We will..but," I paused before Mirio interrupted. "We will make it together! No buts about it! I'll make sure to text and call you everyday. And, I'll drop off some food for you and cupcakes! The ones with sprinkles and a little frosting, just the way you like-"
"I don't want you to use all your energy to do this stuff for me," I sighed and shook my head slightly. "I feel..bad."
"And you shouldn't." He heard the commotion outside and let go of me, his eyes full of..fear. Fear to me, fear to us.
What if we lose touch?
Would things still be the same?
"Your parents are outside, go ahead. They already signed you out." The lady in front announced, giving us a smile.
"Oh, can you please stall them for a few minutes-"
"I've stalled them for a while, I'm sorry." She says softly, adjusting her glasses.
"My head hurts," I mumbled softly, eyes dull as I shakily moved out of my seat.
Mirio quickly grabbed my hands. I jumped and looked at him, getting quieter with each second. "Mir-"
He stood up and pulled me into a hug, the embrace getting tighter as he chuckled sadly. "My heart hurts, it almost feels like this is the last time I'll physically touch you again."
"T-That's not true and you know it-"
"And if it is, I want you-"
"It's not, don't," I sniffled and buried my head into his shoulder. "Don't say that."
"It'll be okay.." Mirio says, pulling away. "I want you to remember something. But, you need to take a deep breath. Don't make this bigger than it really is, we've got this.."
"O..Okey." I shuddered, sniffling. "I'm sorry.."
"A few weeks ago, I kissed you for the first time and knew for sure that we were going to be endgame. And you know what? We haven't gone that far to find out, so there's no way I'm ending that now. I love you, and I'll make sure every single day you remember that." He answered, placing a kiss on my head.
I smiled and wiped my eyes, getting myself mentally ready to go.
"I..I should go."
"Hold on. Here." He says softly.
Mirio pretended to place his heart into my hands. I laughed softly, looking up at him.
He beamed brightly and gave me a thumbs up. "Someone's got to keep it safe! Don't lose it, I'll need it back at prom!"
"I'll..I'll keep it safe, I promise." I answered back, pretending to stuff it in my pocket. "Please, for my sake, don't get into any trouble. I'll rest easy if I know you won't get yourself in danger."
"Awe..well! Whatever you want, but there's no promises after prom." Mirio pouts.
"Awe no!"
"Oh yeah, he's dead for hurting you. I still need to put him in place!"
"That's sounds so villianious, where's the Mirio I know?" I pout back.
Mirio sighed and held my shoulders. "Still here. Don't worry. I..love you. A lot. I'll be showing that till now. You'll even get sick of me."
"Never. I love you too."
I wave the lady goodbye and took a glance back at Mirio. It'll be fine.
No.
Everything will be great.
Mirio would tell me.
He gave me one last smile before I opened the door. My parents, with worried expressions, ran up and hugged me, keeping me close to them.
I wasn't sure if I missed it or if I was from Mirio's absence, but tears started filling my eyes.
I shakily accepted the hug, there's voices drowning out.
"Have you been okay?!"
"We're sorry we kept you here for so long, it won't happen again!"
"Let's talk at home, we've got some great news!"
A deep breath.
Relax.
"Oh, I can't wait to hear it." I answered, smiling back. "Have a good anniversary trip? What did you guys do?"
"Oh, yeah!" My mom asked, a little caught off guard. "You..You've never ask us about our trips before.."
"How's your wrist, we've already set the appointment. You'll be healthy and resting in no time." My dad states.
"Thank you, that'd be great." I state.
"You've never told us what happened." She say softly.
"I was running and hurt my wrist pretty bad. It was my fault, I should've watched where I was going."
"Maybe we'll have to get your eyesight checked too-" She muttered before my dad nudged her shoulder. "Nah, he's fine. Let's just keep an eye on it."
"Are..you sure?" She asked.
I laughed softly. "No..it's alright. I'm okay."
We all headed to the car, just before I hear a distant voice.
"Tamaki!!"
Wait..
I know that voice..
Mirio..?
"TAMA!! GET BETTER SOON!" Mirio yelled to me.
My parents turned with strange expressions on their faces.
I beamed up and waved back. "I hope so! Bye!!"
Mirio laughed and dashed off. I sighed softly and felt a little better from here on. Like weight was lifted off me.
"He..looks so familiar." My mom mumbled, looking at me. "Who is that?"
I felt it wasn't the need to tell them the whole truth yet, it just didn't feel right. But, I smiled and gave them the best answer I could come up with.
"He's my best friend. I trust him with my life, I'm sure he's going to take care of everything.."
"You..trust him that much?" My dad asked, skeptical.
"Mhm," I moved the side of my hair behind my ears, as Mirio liked.
I confidently walked to the car and sat in the back, closing the door behind me.
They both felt uneased by my sudden change in mood, but just shrugged it off as a phase, maybe a effect of being sick.
The drive went on and I couldn't wait to call him after school.
And every day after that.
