Demi

I opened the door and Emily walked inside. Wilmer sat on the edge of the bed, now clothed, and looked up when he heard us. I saw his anxiety and my heart ached for him, and me, and us. I closed my eyes when Emily stopped walking, staring at him for a few seconds.

"Wilmer!" My mouth fell open when she ran towards him, jumping up onto the bed and into his arms. "You're back!"

He hugged her back and looked at me, a relieved smile spreading over his face and I swear I thought I saw him tearing up. "I'm back, sorry I had to leave for a little bit."

"It's okay." She leaned back and smiled at him. "Demi said you had a time-out."

"I did." He nodded. "But now I'm back and I'm here to stay."

"Good." She hugged him again, snuggling into his chest.

I walked over and sat next to them, taking his free hand and leaned my head on his shoulder. I could've cried of happiness in that moment, knowing that I could be free to repair my relationship with Wilmer without any guilt from Emily's feelings towards him. Wilmer turned his head to me and I didn't let him speak, instead I leaned up and kissed him. It felt different now, without all of the fear and anxiety of the unknown. Now I could kiss him with the confidence that we were going to spend the rest of our lives together back in tact.

"I love you." I whispered, once we had pulled away.

"I love you too." He kissed my temple, then Emily's forehead. "It's good to be home again."

~*~

Wilmer's re-entrance into Emily's life was practically seamless. We stayed for a few more days in New York, holed up in our hotel room watching movies and playing various games. I wanted Emily to be able to go outside and see New York City, but I didn't want to have to deal with the paparazzi hounding us with questions about her. Eventually, Wilmer coaxed me into going for a walk in central park, so I eventually agreed.

On the way out of the hotel, Wilmer held Emily against his chest with one arm, while the other wrapped around my waist. The paparazzi yelled questions about Emily's origins and the status of Wilmer and I's relationship.

"IS THIS YOUR DAUGHTER?"

"DEMI IS THIS ANOTHER MAN'S BABY?"

"WILMER WHY ARE YOU WITH SUCH A SLUT?"

I grabbed for Wilmer's arm but he already let go of me and shoved the guy back.

"Shut the fuck up!"

Max pulled Wilmer away from him and ushered us both to the car. I instantly pulled Emily out of his arms.

"What is wrong with you?"

"Did you hear what they were saying?"

"I did, but you were carrying Emily! What if he decided to hit you back?"

He sighed and looked down. "I didn't think about that."

"Of course you didn't."

We fell silent and Emily looked out the window. I felt Wilmer take my hand and glanced over to see him looking at me with apologetic eyes. I sighed and he smiled tentatively, then leaned over to kiss my cheek, pressing quick kisses to my face until I pulled away and smiled. He shifted to the middle seat and wrapped an arm around my shoulders. I leaned my head against him and took a deep breath, deciding to let it go. I knew he was only defending my honor but I was already so anxious about the paparazzi around Emily and I didn't want anyone in the adoption process to see Wilmer as a violent man.

We got to the park and let Emily jog ahead as Wilmer and I walked hand in hand. Max and Kelsey trailed behind us, joking around on Kelsey's snapchat.

"I'm sorry about before." He said quietly, after a few moments of silence.

"It's okay, really. I've gotten so freaked out by the guy in LA, I don't want anything to happen to her." I leaned my head against his shoulder. "Or you."

"I'm not gonna let anything happen to her." He squeezed my hand. "Or you."

I smiled and kissed him softly. "I know you won't."

"Momma look!"

I turned and smiled when I saw Emily pointing gleefully at a couple of ducklings swimming in the pond. She walked to the bridge that cross the pond and leaned over the railing, giggling as she waved at the ducks. Just as I opened my mouth to tell her not to lean too far, she shifted forward and the motion propelled her over the edge and into the water.

"EMILY!"

Before I could take a step Wilmer was sprinting towards the water where Emily thrashed around. He ripped his jacket off and jumped in, coming up and pulling her towards him. She shrieked and practically clawed at him, wrapping her arms around his neck in a death grip. I ran to the edge of the pond where he swam too and helped them both up, not caring about the water as I hugged him tightly, grabbing Emily's head to kiss her hair.

"Oh my god!" I heard Kelsey and Mac running over. "Are you guys okay?!"

"I'm fine." Wilmer said, more to me than Kelsey. "Emily, are you okay?"

She was still crying pretty hard, so she didn't answer and Wilmer just held her close to him. I shook my head and ran my hand over her back, too shocked to be able to comfort her. Wilmer stood up, wincing a bit, and my hands fretted over his shoulders.

"What hurts?"

"Nothing." He said, shaking his head. "I'm fine."

We had drawn somewhat of a crowd, and I noticed some people's cell-phones were out. It would be no secret now, as Wilmer's heroic actions would be all over the gossip sites within the hour, and people everywhere would be asking about Emily.

We began to walk away and Wilmer picked up his jacket, wrapping it around Emily's shivering frame. She had her face pressed into the crook of his neck, not coming out even when I tried to check her for any injuries.

"She's just shaken up." Wilmer assured me, as we got into the escalade that would take us back to our hotel room.

I was practically wrapped around Wilmer too on the way home. Despite his soaked clothing I stayed pressed against him, one hand on Emily's back and the other around his waist. We got back to the hotel and our security team helped us through the crowd into the lobby.

No one spoke on the way up in the elevator, but once we got off, Max held up his hand for us to wait. I gasped and Wilmer pulled me close to him, both of us staring at the hotel room door that had been busted open. I felt my heartbeat begin to race and shrunk back, further glancing around as Max and one of the other guards took slow, careful steps up to the door.

"This isn't happening." I breathed, and felt Wilmer squeeze my waist.

After five tense minutes, Max walked out. "No one's in there, but the place is trashed."

I felt Wilmer relax but I shook my head. "How did they even get in?"

"I don't know, we'll check hospital cameras, but we had all of the security at the park today."

I closed my eyes for a second. "Get me a new hotel, Max."

"On it."

We walked inside the hotel room and I gasped when I saw everything turned over and broken. Emily looked up from her spot on Wilmer's chest and shrank back when she saw the damage.

"What happened?" She asked Wilmer.

"We don't know." He told her. "Someone-"

"Someone needs a bath." I interrupted, putting on a smile as I took her from his arms. He shot me a questioning look but I ignored him and walked into the bathroom. I didn't want Emily to hear about the scary things going on, because I wanted her to be able to be a kid without all of the worry.

Emily was quiet as she sat in the tub and I gently poured water over her hair.

"What are you thinking about?" I asked with a soft smile.

"Why is everything broken?"

"You don't have to worry about that." I put my hand on her cheek. "Worry about what you want for dinner tonight."

Emily giggled as I poked her stomach, then a tiny line appeared between her eyebrows. "Is Wilmer gonna go away again?"

"I don't think so." I tilted my head. "Why?"

"I don't want him to leave."

"Then he won't." I kissed her forehead. "He loves you."

"I love you."

I smiled widely. "I love you too."

I got her clean and into pajamas, then walked into the other room. Wilmer stood still in his wet clothes talking to Max with a serious expression on his face, while Kelsey sat on the couch typing away.

"We've got a floor reserved at the Ritz."

"Good." I relaxed a bit, knowing how good their security was, then noticed I was covered in mud from sitting on the ground at the park. "I'm gonna go shower, then we can pack up and go over there."

I walked into the bathroom and slowly up dressed, then got under the hot spray of water. I felt like I was in a trance, emotionally spent for the day. I felt like my skin was crawling from knowing that despite the access security my father could still get to me, and Emily.

Suddenly I felt hands touch my hips and I jumped a foot in the air, spinning around to see Wilmer standing there.

"You gave me a heart attack!" I hissed, slapping his chest.

"It wouldn't be the first time." He said, smiling slyly before his eyes softened. "Are you okay?"

"No." I swallowed hard. "I don't know what to do. He can get to me anywhere."

Wilmer stepped closer and pulled me into a hug. "No one is going to get to you. Max will sleep on the floor next to your bed if he has to, but no one will touch you or Emily.

"What if whoever had broken in was here with a gun when we got back?" I was getting hysterical now. "Max can't protect me from that! You can protect me from that!"

"Don't focus on the what-if." He said. "What happened tonight won't happen again."

"You don't know that." I mumbled against his wet skin. "Emily could've drowned today."

"But she didn't."

"But she could've! Because I wasn't watching her! I should've been closer when I saw she was at the water!"

"So that's what this is about?" He lifted my chin with his fingertip. "You blame yourself for that?"

"If she had died, I would've never forgiven myself."

"Demi." He sighed, shaking his head. "She wasn't in danger of dying, you were there, I was there, Max was there, Kelsey was there. Anyone could've done what I did. She's fine, you don't need to beat yourself up about it."

I bit my lip, then nodded and he hugged me again. "I love you."

"I love you too."

"I do have to shower you know." I whispered after a moment.

"I know." I could hear the smile in his voice. "I'm looking forward to the show."

~*~

"Alright, I'll see you in the morning." I said to Emily softly. "I love you."

"I love you too." She said with a big yawn.

I hated that Emily had to bounce from hotel room to hotel room, but I was too afraid to go back to Los Angeles. I wanted to give her the most normal life I could, but with our father messing with our lives like this, that wasn't possible.

"Is she okay?" Wilmer asked, once I got back to our room and into bed.

"She's fine." I sighed and laid down.

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing." I looked over. "Why?"

"You never sleep with your back to me."

I blinked a few times then realized he was right and shifted over. "Sorry, habit I guess." He sighed and I realize how it sounded. "That sounded meaner than I realized."

"It's okay." He smiled and let me snuggle into his side. "Are you feeling better?"

"Not really." I looked up at him. "I just feel like someone's always watching me."

"Yeah, that's kind of Max's job."

I rolled my eyes and shook my head. "I don't know if I'm ever going to feel safe again."

"You are safe." He hugged me tighter for emphasis.

"You know what I mean. Emily is always going to be running from him, and so will I."

Wilmer was quiet for a couple minutes. "I hate what he did to you, and to her. I could wring his neck."

"Permission granted."

He laughed and kissed my forehead. "I think the criminal justice system has a different view on permission to murder."

"Self-defense." I raised one eyebrow. "I saw it work on the ID channel once."

"I'll keep that in mind next time I'm face-to-face with him."

"That reminds me." I pushed myself up on the bed. "Emily's trial is in a few months, and I already told the social worker you're out of the picture because I thought you really were never coming back. I'm gonna tell her that you are back, but you really can't leave again, or it'll look like she's not in a stable environment."

He swallowed hard and nodded. "I'm not leaving again."

"That's way to say, but your actions so far say otherwise. I believe you, but I have to make sure you know the consequences if you decide to do it again."

He kept quiet and I took a deep breath, not wanting to fight with him. I knew he was holding his tongue, which I appreciated.

"Let's just go to bed."

I pushed myself up to look at him, then leaned down and pressed my lips to his. Wilmer slid his hands up my back and I moved my leg over his thigh, straddling his waist as I kissed him deeply. He groaned softly when I bit down into his bottom lip and dragged it out, and his hands tightened around my ass.

"I thought you didn't want to do this." He said, but didn't protest as I kissed down his neck.

"I changed my mind."

He kissed me back for a few minutes, but then held my hands when I ran my fingertips over the waistline of his boxers he stilled. "You're not going to regret this in the morning?"

I groaned and pushed myself up. "Wilmer, I'm a big girl. I want to have sex with my husband."

He grinned apologetically. "Sorry."

This time it was him who closed the gap in between us, sitting up before I could move and capturing his mouth with mine.
