Chapter Eleven
Juliann woke to her girlfriend's arms around her body, Juliann smiled before carefully turning over to face Kela. She took in the sight of Kela, the way Kela's short blue hair smooshed into the pillow, the way Kela's lips were parted just enough to let breath escape through her lips, the way Kela looked in their dimly lit bedroom.
Juliann loved her girlfriend. They had been together for ten years, they thought they could survive almost anything that was thrown at their relationship, they had survived their homophobic family gatherings, they had survived their homophobic friends and made new ones, they had survived their phases of trying to hide their identity and their relationship, and they had survived the hints of jealousy that rose on occasions.
Juliann and Kela trusted each other now, they trusted each other to respect their relationship, they trusted each other not to stray without a reason, they trusted each other when they said I love you because they genuinely meant it.
Juliann softly kissed Kela's lips before carefully climbing out of bed.
She wondered down to the kitchen; she took in the bright sunlight surrounding the lounge room and kitchen.
She opened up the balcony door just a little to allow the coastal breeze to seep through, she inhaled the morning coastal scent. This was worth it. The sight of being away from reality for a while, the sight of being able to enjoy time being someone else and the sight of being able to enjoy what they had before and what they were going to obtain afterwards.
Juliann slowly pulled herself away from the morning scent as she forced herself to the kitchen, she opened up the fridge.
She was surprised to see food in there, she beamed with excitement as she reached out some eggs, butter and milk. She placed those three items on the bench before attempting to quietly rummage through the kitchen for a pan to use.
Juliann took delight in being able to cook, it was one of her strengths when it came to her relationship.
She took her time enjoying cooking for her girlfriend.
"Morning."
Juliann briefly looked up "Morning."
Kela rested herself against the kitchen bench "How was..." she hesitated for a second "he?"
Juliann stared at the eggs for a moment as she paused stirring. She allowed herself time to think of the right words.
Kela watched, she watched the back of her girlfriend, watching as Juliann tensed for a second before releasing her tension. "Did something happen?"
"We fucked." The words blurted out of her mouth as she attempted to keep her scrambled eggs from looking crispy.
"I figured but like...is it everything you dreamed of?"
"This is nearly done; can you get some toast ready. Please." Juliann gave the scrambled eggs a few last push arounds with the spatula.
"How many slices?"
"However many you want, and I'll just have one."
Kela hesitated to move as she watched Juliann began to turn off the stove, she pushed herself away from the kitchen bench, she slowly slid her arms around Juliann's waist before kissing her girlfriend's cheek "We'll be fine. We always are."
Juliann took reassurance in Kela's words.
Their thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door.
Kela sighed "I'll get it."
"No. It's okay. I'll get it. Just look after the toast." Juliann pulled out of Kela's soft grip
"Look after the toast?"
Juliann half-heartedly smiled as she made her way towards the apartment door, she slowly reached her hand out before forcing herself to smile as she opened the door "Oh. Jared."
"Where you expecting someone else?"
"No. It's fine. We're just in the middle of breakfast." Juliann dropped her smile "Come in."
Jared stepped into the apartment "Smells good."
"It's just eggs." Juliann closed the door "Plain ol' eggs."
Jared took a glance at Juliann.
"Sorry. We're thankful for the food but it's missing some flavour." She began to make her way towards the kitchen.
"Just give a list of what you need, and I'll get it."
"I think we can manage, it's grocery shopping. It's not rocket science." Kela piped up as she placed two slices of toast on one plate and one slice of toast on another plate.
Juliann opened up a draw and pulled out two knives and two forks as Kela picked up the plates.
" 'xcuse me." Kela spoke to Jared.
Jared side stepped before watching Kela carrying the two plates to the lounges, he watched as she placed the two plates on the coffee table before returning back to the kitchen.
"Is there something you need?" Juliann asked as she reached for two glasses in a cupboard.
"Actually, Christoffer does. Your to spend the morning with him."
Juliann nodded "Let me have breakfast first."
"Uh. His already got that sorted. So, just change." He took notice of her pyjamas.
Juliann breathed heavily "Come on, Jared. It's our first morning here. I haven't had time to enjoy it with Kela."
"There's plenty of time for that."
Kela froze for a moment before looking up at Juliann "It's fine. It'll be fine."
"But the food."
Kela glanced over at the coffee table before glancing back at Juliann "It'll be fine."
Juliann swallowed hard "Fine." She looked up at Jared "Give me a minute." She forced herself not to slam the glasses down on the kitchen bench, instead she slammed the cutlery down on the bench.
