Chapter 9: It's Decided

Previously...

She felt her heart clinch for a moment until she was broken out of the moment. Eevee had jumped up on Drew's bed and was barking at him sassily, most likely in defense of its trainer. That was until Absol picked up Eevee by the neck in its mouth and set it on the ground. The squabble was forgotten as they both began to laugh.

The tension between them had significantly decreased, but May had gotten frustrated with herself. It seemed she just kept making things awkward between them in the time they spent traveling. It made her remember when he said he was considering ditching her.

She didn't have too much of a problem with it when he first mentioned it. Not that she hated him, at least not anymore, their relationship had improved over time since the day they had first met on the beach. But the more time she spent with him, the more she started to enjoy his company, even if he was a stuck up jerk most of the time.

She started to worry that her ability to always make things awkward would push him away. She was a little bit scared that he would leave her on her own. Not that she couldn't handle herself, but the idea of it stung a little more than it probably should have.

She tried to shove it down. They had one more night on the ship, and the next day, late morning, they would be in Cherrygrove City. That was enough time to keep the peace, but still, he potentially could ditch her at any time.

She shifted uncomfortably until she ended up sitting up in her bed. She had woken up early, even before Drew, and she couldn't fall back asleep, so her thoughts ran rampant. She covered her face with her hands before letting out a deep breath in frustration. She hated how much she was thinking about it and letting it bother her when there wasn't much she could do about it. She heard shuffling from where Drew was sleeping, she dropped her hands and watched as he got up, he looked at her looking at him. A shocked expression came over his face before it was erased by a smirk.

"You're up early, I'm impressed," he said, his voice much deeper than usual, brought down by the morning haze. That was another thing too, not only had he grown much taller than her, his voice had finally transitioned from a childish pitch to a much lower sound, his fangirls really loved that. Every word he would say, they would hang on to it as if it was their lifeline and squeal at just the sound of his voice. That was completely ridiculous to May, she felt embarrassed for those girls who clearly did not possess the shame for their actions. He was a person, not a God, but that didn't matter to them.

"Hello? Is anyone in there? You on the moon, space cadet?" Drew asked, waving a hand in front of her face, suddenly closer than she remembered him being before being absorbed in her thoughts. She snapped back into reality.

"10-4 Houston, we've successfully landed," She replied back.

"What?" He asked, confused about her response.

"I don't know," May shrugged.

"Anyway, why are you up so early?" He asked, stepping back to sit back down on his bed.

"Oh, I just woke up a little bit ago, and I couldn't fall back asleep," she explained.

"Something on your mind?" He raised an eyebrow.

"Oh it's nothing, I'm just being stupid," she said, forcing a smile. He eyed her suspiciously.

"Okay, if you're sure," he said, leaving it open ended Incase she wanted to say something. It was clear that he knew she was lying by his expression, but she could tell he didn't feel like it was his place. It was true, it's not like they were super close or anything, especially not after what she had done. She was surprised they were even getting along this well. He walked into the kitchen before throwing a granola bar at her. Unfortunately, it hit her in the face, which surprised her into hitting her head against the wall.

"Ow!" She snapped at him as he started bursting with laughter.

"I'm sorry!" He wheezed through his laughs.

"You are so not!" She pouted as she aggressively unwrapped it and chomped down.

"You okay?" He asked, still laughing. She stuck her nose up.

"Nevermind, I think you're fine," he said, finally calming down from his laughs. When she finally finished her granola bar, she realized that there was something important that was missing.

"Hey Drew? Are you okay?" She asked suddenly. A confused look came over him.

"What? Yeah, why wouldn't I be?" He asked.

"I just realized that you haven't had Roselia out with you, is it okay?" She asked concerned, an annoyed look replaced the confusion.

"Oh, I'm a bit frustrated with him right now, that's why he's not out," Drew said as he grabbed Roselia's pokeball from his bag. He was fixated upon it.

"Any reason why? I know that disputes like this are personal so it's okay if-"

"He's just being a bit weird," he said. Suddenly, the ball burst open and Roselia appeared. Once he solidified, he looked at May, and then looked at Drew, then back to May, then back to Drew. He smirked before a knowing expression came over his face, and if Roselia had eyebrows, they would be raised at Drew. The tips of Drew's ears grew red with embarrassment before he returned Roselia.

"What was that about," May asked.

"See, I told you he was being weird," Drew sighed, exasperated at his pokemon's suggestiveness.

"Drew, why is there a rose on the ground?" May asked him suddenly. He looked down, sure enough, where Roselia once stood was a red rose. He picked it up before handing it to her.

"Guess he wanted you to have one," he said as she took the rose.

"Ah, so this is where you get your roses, guess you're no magician," May shrugged, teasing him. He laughed.

"Yup, you figured me out," he sighed. She was about to speak when a loud explosion sound rang through the ship, and the boat shook violently in an aftershock before returning back to its gentle lull. The two of them grabbed their pokeballs before Drew threw open the door with May in hot pursuit behind. Both were still in their pajamas.

As they ran down the halls, others began to open their doors with sleep clouding their eyes, awakened by the disturbance. They arrived at the scene, which was in the cafeteria of the ship. Two people, a man and a woman were dressed in black with a red R on their shirts. Many staff members had already surrounded them and were in the middle of a battle.

The two dressed in black were losing badly. However, the damage had already been dealt. One of the other entrances to the cafeteria had been completely destroyed. The wall was blown out, as well as the two supplies closest next to it. The floor under it had been destroyed, exposing the skeleton of the bottom of the ship. Still, a bit of damage that would cost money to fix, money that they sure wouldn't be getting from those two thugs.

The two thugs were easily beaten before the boat's security team hauled the two away. They kept screaming about Team Rocket as they struggled to get away. May and Drew shared a knowing look with each other. Of course it was Team Rocket, who else would have a giant red R branded on their shirts! More people had arrived by then and May spotted Brianna through the crowd. Most everyone was in their pajamas, woken up by the sound and immediately coming to investigate.

"Everything is alright now! We will block that entrance, everyone will just have to go through the other. You can go back to your days now," one of the staff members announced. There was murmuring in the crowd before people began to file out. May pointed out Brianna to him.

"Hey, go ask her what she wanted to talk to you about," she said before gently shoving him in Brianna's direction. She gave him an encouraging grin.

"Hey Brianna," he said, capturing her attention as he approached her.

"O-Oh, Mr. Drew! Hello," she said shyly as her face flushed red.

"May said she saw you the other day and that you wanted to ask me something?" He asked. He was surprised to see her face burn even redder.

"Well um, you see, Johto contests are partner contests, so I was wondering if you wanted to be partners, b-but um, May said you two were already traveling with each other so it's totally fine. I can find somebody else to team up with," she said shyly. Drew was shocked, not that she wanted to be his partner because who wouldn't, but that Johto contests were done with partners. He was embarrassed with himself for not even knowing that they were.

"Oh, I see then, we'll, thanks for the offer anyway, I'm flattered," he said. She smiled brightly.

"Good luck, I'll see you around," he said before patting her shoulders and watching her eyes become dizzy swirls. He joined up with May as they walked back to their room.

"Well that was fast, what did she ask?" May inquired curiously.

"She asked if I wanted to be partners," he answered. May looked surprised.

"Partners for what?" She asked.

"Apparently for the Johto contests. They're nothing like Hoenn and Kanto, Johto contests are partner contests, May," Drew explained.

"What?!" May exclaimed in shock.

"Yeah. I didn't know either, but since we're traveling, I guess we're partners," he shrugged as he opened the door to their room and held it for her to go first.

"Unless you want to ditch me for someone else," she laughed.

"Well I made a promise, so now I can't ditch you even if I ever want to," he said jokingly, as if it was a heavy burden.

"Even after my weirdness you don't want to get rid of me?" She said, half serious.

"Nah, I can take your weirdness, what I can't take is the fawning, it gets to a point where it's obnoxious. You're a different kind of obnoxious, but hey, it's fun to make fun of you, and you're not half bad of a coordinator," he shrugged, smirking at her.

"Hey jerk! This half bad of a coordinator defeated you in the Kanto Grand Festival," she said proudly.

"Yes you did," he said, a genuine smile took over his face. That was not the response both were expecting to come from him, but it was nice.

"Well, guess it's decided then, I'm stuck with my arrogant rival as a partner," May shrugged.

"Like I'm actually that arrogant, I know my faults and I know what I have to fix. I'm confident, not arrogant," he scoffed. She thought about it. It was true though, he may be slightly full of himself, but he knew where his weaknesses were and how to work on them, he was very confident, and that was something she really admired in him. Confidence did not come easily to her but she was working on it.

"No, you're not, but that doesn't mean you're not a jerk!" She said, sticking her tongue out at him that playfully.

"Okay, I may be just a bit of a jerk," he admitted with a laugh.

-A/N-

Whew. It's done and on a Sunday! I'm slightly back on schedule XD. Anyways, I feel like this was kind of a stupid chapter. It had more meaning in my original idea but it didn't make any sense, but I wanted to keep it in just so that there was that first moment that would lead up to others in the story.

I hope Drew was in character. I've noticed there's not a whole lot of his point of view, but I feel like May is probably more of the main narrator of this story but I have a little sprinkle of Drew in there. I also am so bad about forgetting that Pokemon even exist because I'm so bad about just focusing on May and Drew's interactions. I'm being honest, I completely forgot about Roselia so I added him in here. I feel like he would know all along and is just super suggestive about it to Drew, waggling his nonexistent eyebrows XD.

I hope my Houston joke made sense! Drew said what because he had no idea what she was talking about because Houston doesn't exist in their world. I don't know why I feel like I have to explain it, but I feel like I'll have people after me if they didn't understand it and I didn't clarify just in case!

When this is posted, it'll be May, so happy May everyone, for those going back to school soon, I wish you luck! I will not be so expect the same update schedule! I'm hoping to finish this book some time over the summer, but I think it's going to be a lot longer than I first expected! What have I gotten myself into! Chapter 9 and they still aren't in Johto yet. Man this thing is so long and I keep writing even longer chapters! Why am I like this!

I promise though, even if my update schedule becomes irregular, I will finish this story! And if I don't update for months, you can give me crap about it because chances are I'm just being lazy and doing whatever I want XD. Yes I want to write for me, and I want to write whenever I feel like, but I have a responsibility now, you are my audience and I have to deliver to you all. This isn't just about me anymore, it's about what you guys want too. I could never post every day like I could when I first started because I have other stuff I like to do, but you guys deserve to not be left on hold for months, so I am trying to be better about that because this is something you enjoy and once I get into it, that I enjoy writing! Anyway, that concludes this rant! I hope you all are doing well!

Until next Sunday!

P.S. those of you who have read Defying Fate, I promise the Brianna in this story is not a psychotic wacko XD
