Chapter 8: Tension
Previously...
He silently left as he had come, leaving her there as she pulled her clothes out of her bag and into the wash. After her spectacle, things were sure to be awkward, but also, whatever the heck that was earlier was definitely messing with her head. What was going on with her?

The next couple of hours had been excruciating. She had finished doing the laundry, however, the air around them was still stiff. When either of them tried to speak it felt awkward and forced, so at a certain point, they had both decided to go silent. It got to an unbearable point to where May decided she had to get out of the room to get some air.
"I'm going on a walk," she announced, capturing Drew's attention from the book he was reading. She had no idea how he kept managing to find books to read everywhere they stayed. With a roll of her eyes, she checked to make sure she had her keycard before leaving the room. It was like she could feel the pressure lift from her chest the further she got away from the room. She already felt much better.
She made her way down the stairs and into the battle arena room. She decided to watch from the sidelines to observe the tactics used by the trainers for inspiration for possible future appeal routines. She thought about the Pokemon she had brought with her, Blaziken, Squirtle, Eevee, Skitty, Beautifly, and Munchlax. Keeping them in mind, she turned her focus to the battle going on between two trainers.
The trainer on the left side of the arena was using a Starmie while the trainer on the right side was using a Breloom. She watched as the Breloom let out a powerful seed bomb attack, sending many of the seeds towards the Starmie.
"Use rapid spin to dodge!" Starmie's trainer said, a girl with blond hair in a ponytail. The Starmie began to spin and gain speed before dodging the attack and swinging around to hit the Breloom and continuing on its path back in front of its trainer. She made a mental note that squirtle knew rapid spin, and that it could be used as a dodge and attack in one. The Breloom looked a bit thrown off, as was its trainer, a younger boy with brown hair.
"mach punch Breloom!" He exclaimed. The Breloom pulled its arm back to charge up the attack as it charged towards the Starmie.
"Starmie, Psychic!" The blonde trainer countered. The Breloom was stopped in its tracks as a magenta beam came from the jewel in the middle of Starmie. It was lifted in the air and spun around before bashed into the floor twice. The Breloom managed to get up at his trainer begging, but it was worse for wear.
Using psychic that way was probably a bit too reckless and violent to be used in a contest battle, it would probably cause her to lose points if she tried to use it. Still, Starmie's trainer was clearly skilled. The playing field was equal, both Pokemon were weak to each other, Starmie was weak to the grass type attacks, while Breloom was weak to Starmie's psychic type attacks, but she had the skill to gain the upper hand.
"Breloom! Seed Bomb again!" The brown haired trainer said.
"Quick Starmie! Ice beam on the ground! Get out of range!" Starmie's trainer said as the Starmie aimed an ice beam at the ground, created a pillar of ice underneath it, causing Breloom's attack to miss.
"Now ice beam again, this time on Breloom!" Starmie's trainer said. The Starmie let out the attack, freezing the breloom in ice.
"Psychic!" She called out. The Starmie levitated the Breloom in the air before smashing it into the ground again, shattering the ice around Breloom. The Breloom didn't get up after that.
"Breloom return!" The boy said as he held out his pokeball the red beam encasing the Breloom before it disappeared. The ice beam dodge stood out to May, definitely something she could experiment with. She was shaken out of her thoughts by a familiar voice.
"May! It's so good to see you!" A younger girl with straight reddish hair just above her shoulders and blue eyes waved at her as she walked over.
"Oh, Brianna! What a coincidence seeing you here! Are you going to Johto for the contests as well?" May asked brightly.
"Yes! I am! I'm so excited! I've been training really hard since we last battled! I'm really going to try to make it to the Grand Festival this time!" She said, determined.
"Well good for you! I think you can do it!" May encouraged her.
"Thank you! Oh, a sort of random question, but would you happen to know if Mr. Drew is on the boat? I want to ask him something," she said shyly, her face flushing red.
"Yeah, he's here, we're actually traveling together, I left to get some air though, being around your rival for a week can be tiring sometimes," She laughed lightly. "I can take you to our room so you can talk to him if you'd like?" May offered. Brianna's red face slightly soured.
"Oh, I see, nevermind then," She said quietly.
"You sure?" May asked, concerned at her sudden change in optimism.
"Yeah, it's not important. It was good to see you May, I'll see you later?" Brianna said.
"Yeah, it was good to see you, take care," May smiled sweetly, but inside she was still concerned for the girl's sudden change in demeanor. Brianna waved before walking off, mumbling something about a partner quietly to herself. May was confused about what she was talking about. She refused to just shrug it off, she let her concern linger as she decided to go back to the room. Hopefully the weird tension between them would have dissolved in her absence. She made her way back to the room and came back to find him exactly where he was when she left. Sitting on the couch with a book. He looked up at the sound of the door closing behind her. His emerald gaze met her blue eyes. Definitely none of the tension had left in her absence.
"Hey," she tried lightly.
"Hey," he said back.
"I ran into Brianna when I was out, she wanted to ask you something, not sure what, but then she said it wasn't important anymore, it was a little weird, just letting you know in case we see her again and you want to ask her about or something," she said, trying to make conversation as she sat down on her bed to kick her shoes off. She then pulled her legs up to sit criss-cross on the edge of the bed.
"Really? If I see her, I'll ask her about," he said with a slightly intrigued tone. May laid back and stared at the ceiling. Watching that battle made her realize that she hadn't let her Pokemon out in a while. She missed the company and she needed another escape from the stifling tension in the room. She grabbed one of her pokeballs from her bag and let out her Eevee. The little brown fox pokemon let out a little squeal. She held her Eevee to her chest pressing her face into its fur.
"What are you doing?" Drew asked as he raised an eyebrow at her. He sat his book down and was fully facing her from on the couch.
"I haven't let out my Pokemon in awhile, I miss them," May explained as she played with Eevee's ears.
"Yeah, you're right, the only one I've let out was Flygon, and I worked him ragged," Drew said guiltily. He went over to his bed where his backpack rested before grabbing one of his own pokeballs and letting out his Absol. Eevee immediately leaped out of May's arms towards Absol, curious of the new pokemon. Drew gave Absol a short rub on the head before Eevee began running circles around Absol. Absol became slightly standoffish, not sure what to do about the bundle of energy that was Eevee running around him. Eevee stopped in front of Absol before taking a playful stance, it's fluffy tail waving back and forth erratically in its excitement. Absol observed curiously.
"It seems Eevee's excitement is a lot for Absol to handle," May laughed at the two Pokemon.
"Or, Eevee's trainer doesn't know how to calm it down," Drew said snarkily. There it was. Finally that break, things were more normal again.
"What! You take that back! It's your fault Absol doesn't know how to relax and have fun! Probably because of his typically uptight trainer!" May countered angrily. Drew put his hands up laughing.
"Sorry I take coordinating seriously!" He shot back.
"So do I! You jerk!" She fired.
"We have different definitions of serious," Drew said, flicking his hair, an old habit that died down that sometimes would come up again.
"That doesn't mean I don't take it seriously!" May crossed her arms.
"Sure doesn't seem like you do," he smirked at her looking at her from the corner of his eyes. She felt her heart clinch for a moment until she was broken out of the moment. Eevee had jumped up on Drew's bed and was barking at him sassily, most likely in defense of its trainer. That was until Absol picked up Eevee by the neck in its mouth and set it on the ground. The squabble was forgotten as they both began to laugh.

-A/N-
So, due to popular demand, instead of May and Drew just competing against each other for every contest, Johto will be partner contests. I thought about what I was going to do about the Wallace Cup but I figured it out how I'm going to make that work. For now, they don't know that Johto has partner contests so that will be fun. Anyways, I technically finished this Monday because I finished this chapter at 1 am XD. I had like 200 words written so I wrote the rest of the the like 1,300 words on Sunday after posting the next chapter XD. It's currently 4/20/2020 as of when I'm writing this.
So the reason behind why I didn't spread out my writing, is probably more legitimate, my cousin is a nurse and has to work and my aunt runs the ER at the hospital she works at, so they can't be at their home. But my cousin has a 6 year old daughter who's in kindergarten. She had been staying with her grandma, my other aunt, until she said she couldn't take care of her, which no surprise, she's super unreliable, so we had to take her, she arrived last Sunday, and oh my gosh, it's so exhausting having her around, it's like she sucks my energy and uses it for herself XD.
I'm not much of a kid person. I'll try to have a moment to myself and she comes in and asks me 50 million questions about what I'm doing and why. We have at least 2 more weeks with her. I'm not even the one taking the most care of her either. My sister has been the one watching her because my parents have to work, if I had to do what she was doing, I would die. I'm just so tired at the end of the day, I fall asleep much earlier because she wakes me up early. It's not fun. XD but I will try to keep on schedule!
Anyways, that's my excuse XD until next time!
