Chapter 60: No Promise of Forever
Previously...
May and Drew stood side by side. A heavy silence settled over the two. It was probably the most awkward she had ever felt around him before. May sighed.
"We need to talk," May announced, breaking the silence. Drew simply nodded in agreement.

The two walked together silently, heading towards the Pokemon Center. May held the sleeve of his black turtleneck, her fingers pinching the fabric by his wrist. He wanted to hold her hand for real, but he didn't feel like he had earned the right yet, so he left it up to her to decide. Still, it was a nice reminder that she was there and that she was right beside him.
When they were right outside the building, she let go of him. He fought the urge to take her hand to reconnect them, flexing his fingers, then curling them into a fist. At the counter, they got a room and keys and so they headed upstairs to find their room.
"I'm sorry, Drew," May said as soon as the door shut. He whipped around and gave her a confused look. Her head was hung in shame.
"Why are you sorry?"
"This wouldn't have happened if I hadn't pushed you too hard. I've been doing some thinking, and I've come to understand how you feel. If you're done with contests after this year and likely never to see me again afterwards, it makes sense why you would hold yourself back from me. No matter how much you don't want to, or how much it hurts to see me close with Brendan. I'm sorry for getting so mad when you would slip up, and I'm sorry for selfishly making things harder on you."
May was trembling, her entire body shaking. He closed the distance between them, cupping her face in his hands, before he lifted her head up. His heart squeezed painfully at the sight of tears in her deep blue eyes. When they spilled over, he wiped them away with the pads of his thumbs. Drew leaned forward, resting his forehead against hers.
"You have nothing to be sorry for. I'm the one that should apologize to you. I'm sorry for pushing you away. I was trying to protect myself in the only way I knew how. When I left for my journey, I never intended to let anyone in, and I certainly never intended to meet you. I didn't want to make it harder for me to leave than it already was. But then I met you, and when we started traveling together, I should have known that I couldn't deny how I felt about you to myself any longer. The truth is, I think I've liked you for a long time, longer than we've been traveling together." Drew paused and May let out a choked sob.
"Like you, I've done some thinking. It's going to be hard to leave you already. I don't want to come to regret not being with you for the time we have left, if you would still even want to be with me. I don't want to spend the rest of my life wondering what if. After you got taken by Team Rocket, I got taken as well, and I woke up back at home. The only thing I could think about was you. I had to escape and come back to you, I had to know if you were alright. I realized what I felt for you wasn't some silly crush I could get rid of if I ignored it or returned home." Drew lifted his forehead off of hers before pressing a kiss to the same spot. He could feel her suck in a startled breath.
"I'm in love with you, May."
More tears fell from her eyes as she smiled, halfway laughing and halfway crying. She brought a hand up to gently hold one of Drew's hands that cupped her cheek and leaned into his palm. He waited patiently for her response, anxiousness pooling in his gut.
"Kiss me," she said. "Please."
Relieved, he wasted no time. She clenched his jacket in her hands as he pulled her face closer to him, bringing each other as close as possible, before pressing their lips together. Drew finally allowed himself to let go and fully drown in her. He hadn't felt this free in a long time as his lips glided across hers. He poured out everything he felt through this kiss, hoping that his actions could show her his words were true this time. He could taste her tears that kept falling, but no matter how salty they were, she still tasted so sweet.
"I love you too," she said breathlessly when they finally parted for air. He grinned at her confession, unable to stop himself from leaning back in and crashing his lips against hers once more. They both smiled against each other, laughing giddily between kisses. Drew's head was all fuzzy, unable to think about anything except the girl in front of him. He wanted her more than anything.
"I can't promise you forever, even though I wish I could. But for the rest of the time we have left, it would make me so happy if I could call you my girlfriend. Would you let me?" May kissed him softly.
"Only if I get to call you my boyfriend," she said.
"I take it that's a yes?" He asked cheekily.
"Don't ruin the moment, grasshead."
"Whatever you say, bandana brain." Just as he leaned in to kiss her again, the sound of a DexNav ringing interrupted the moment. Confused, May pulled it out of her bag and gasped.
"It's my mom! I forgot to tell her I'm okay!" May said, immediately answering.
"May?" Caroline's voice came through the device's speakers.
"Mom! I'm okay! Aunt Christina's been arrested. There's nothing to worry about anymore! I meant to call you, but things got a little hectic, I'm sorry," May said.
"Oh, thank goodness! I'm so glad you're safe! I just arrived in Mahogany Town. Where are you?" She asked.
"Drew and I are resting in a room at the Pokecenter. We can meet you outside."
"Okay, I'll be there soon!" She said. Once she hung up the DexNav, she turned to Drew shyly.
"I'm sorry—"
"There's nothing to apologize for. Come on, let's go wait for your mom."
