Previously...

A little while passed before finally, they were called. The two of them headed towards the stage. As they walked to the edge of the hall, they took a breath before stepping out together into the bright lights.

"I would make a formal introduction, but the partnership of these two has been all the talk as of recently, without further ado, here's May and Drew!" Adrian said as the crowd cheered and a section of girls towards the front were screaming at Drew. As the crowd settled down, May and Drew shared a look before simultaneously releasing their Pokemon.

"Beautifly! Take the stage!" May cried.

"Masquerain, let's go!" Drew exclaimed. The two Pokemon began to circle each other in a dance. They always seemed to do that. He knew it was because the two were highly infatuated with each other, he wasn't sure what May thought about it though. The crowd seemed to like the dance.

"Masquerain! Bubble!" He said and Masquerain let out a sea of bubbles.

"Beautifly! Psychic!" May said. Beautifly's eyes glowed and the bubbles suddenly halted in the air. Then, they began to swirl around the two Pokemon before hanging in the air above them, spread out.

"Masquerain! Use ice beam!" Drew said and Masquerain shot up beams of ice, freezing all the bubbles. Beautifly brought the bubbles down to be on the same level as the two bug Pokemon.

"Silver wind!" They yelled simultaneously. Beautifly let go of its control as she and Masquerain began letting out a silver wind while spinning back to back. The bubbles exploded into blue sparkles, showering the crowd. The crowd gasped in awe. Beautifly and Masquerain turned around, facing each other and dancing around as they slowly came back down to rest above their trainers. The crowd thundered with applause.

"A brilliant display from these two! Let's see what our judges think!" Adrian said cheerfully.

"Beautifly and Masquerain have been wonderfully trained and you can clearly see it in this routine!" Mr. Contesta said as 9.5 appeared on his board.

"The control of Beautifly's psychic and Masquerain's ice beam was remarkable!" Mr. Sukizo said as a score of 9.3 appeared on his board.

"Beautifly and Masquerain are just so adorable! They work very well together and clearly enjoy it! They trust each other and they trust you, it's so nice to see!" Nurse Joy said as a score of 9.8 appeared on her board. 28.6 appeared on the big screen.

"That's the highest score all afternoon!" Adrian announced. The crowd cheered loudly as they exited the stage. They made their way back into the coordinators room. Soon after, it was revealed who had passed the appeal round. Drew and May were revealed first and not long after they appeared, Savannah and Abby showed up. The twins cheered happily and pulled each other into a hug. Wooper and Mareep were both happily jumping around.

May and Drew were put against two guys. Using Skitty and Butterfree, the two managed to snag a win. Their teamwork was still very shaky and they weren't always on the same wavelength. After the second round, they saw they were up against Abby and Savannah. Drew could see that May was visibly a little nervous.

"Hey, it's okay," Drew said, trying to snap her out of it. "If you get nervous now, it's going to mess with your Pokemon."

"I know but, you can tell from the way they battle, those two are really in sync. We just started trying to work together after being rivals for a few years. We don't have the same style of thinking and are used to going against each other, not working together. I'm just nervous that we won't be able to beat them because we won't be able to work together. We just came to a bit of an understanding. If I had known we were going up against a pair like them, I probably would have tried harder. I know that they're beginners, but their close bond may be enough to beat us," May let out. He knocked her head gently with the back of his fist.

"You done now?" He asked. She nodded.

"There's only one thing we can do, and that's try our best," he said as he leaned back in a stretch. May smiled determinedly at him.

"Right! We've got this!" She said. And like that, they were back on the stage with the crowd roaring in their ears. Then, the battle started. May and Drew had been defending against the twins attacks, but no matter what they did, the twins always seemed to have something else to pull out of their sleeves. The time was running out and they were tied points. Then, Savannah told her Wooper to use water gun under Abby's Mareep. Mareep went flying up in the sky before being told to use thunder wave. Drew told Butterfree to dodge, but the wave couldn't be avoided. May was about to tell Skitty to use an attack when Wooper cut its water attack to use earthquake. Drew's paralyzed Butterfree couldn't avoid the attack because it was stunned from flying. Abby's Mareep didn't get hit by the super effective move because it had been up in the air.

"A smart move on Abby and Savannah's side, Mareep was put out of the line of danger from it's teammate's attack! What amazing coordination!" May and Drew lost a bunch of points from that attack. Butterfree wasn't able to do anything as it was paralyzed so May attacked on her own.

"Skitty! Blizzard!" She exclaimed. Skitty then let out a huge ice attack. Abby and Savannah were surprised at the attack, not expecting a Skitty to know a move like that. They lost a few points, but then the buzzer went off. May and Drew's was slightly less than the two of them. The twins looked at each other in shock.

"We won!" Savannah yelled, tackling her sister with a hug. Abby happily hugged her back. Drew noticed May's expression fall as they exited to stage.

"Hey, it's okay, we can't win every time. It was our first battle together, it's a surprise we can even keep a normal conversation with how we used to be. It may not look like it, but we've made a lot of progress. It's easy for them because they're twins. They have a different bond that the two of us will never understand because they were born together, and have always been around each other. We can't expect to beat a bond like that when we can barely get along as it is. This will be their only victory against us, got it? We'll practice hard to improve our teamwork and we'll win the Johto Grand Festival, got it?" He said determinedly.

"Yeah," she smiled up at him. "You've been awfully supportive today, anything wrong? Are you okay?" She asked, concerned. His face fell into an annoyed frown.

"Oh so I can't be nice without being suspected. I'm trying my best to get along with you! Do you have to be so annoying and difficult!" He exclaimed.

"And this is why we lost!" May huffed.

"I literally just said that, which is why I'm trying to be nicer, so we can get along and work together!" He sighed.

"When you're nice, it's weird," she said.

"So I should just be mean to you?" He raised an eyebrow at her.

"No! You're so frustrating! Ugh! I'm hoping there's a way for us to understand each other in battles without you having to be weirdly nice and supportive all the time," she said.

"So you want me to be a jerk?" He questioned.

"You can be nice sometimes, but not all the time because it's too weird and it's uncomfortable! So be a jerk! Be yourself and don't act all weird and supportive!" May exclaimed.

"Okay, sure. Just so you know, you stood there like an idiot when you could have told Skitty to use an attack sooner to stop Wooper," he criticized.

"There you are, and I tried my best, but it all happened so fast, at least I made them lose some points at the end, unlike you getting your Pokemon paralyzed!" She shot back. He smirked at her.

"I might not have gotten paralyzed if you had done something," he shrugged.

"Ugh! You are so infuriating! You stupid stuck up grassheaded jerk!" May insulted him. He grabbed a hold of the knot on her green bandana and tugged it gently.

"Chill out Bandana Brain, now let's go. We've got a lot of training to do," he said before grabbing her forearm and dragging her out of the room. As he left, he could hear the remaking coordinators whispering to each other. He picked up one of the conversations.

"Can't believe I thought they were dating,"

"Yeah they definitely still hate each other,"

"That partnership is so going to fail,"

"Wonder how long they'll last?"

"Wanna make a bet?"

He just smirked to himself. They didn't even know a thing. He and May weren't going to give up. They were going to win the Grand Festival and those jokers would be eating their words later. They headed back to the Pokemon Center, not feeling so bad about their loss anymore, but determined to show the world they could work together.

Oh my gosh! I never want to write another contest again! But I know I have to XD. This was so hard! I had an idea for the Abby and Savannah battle, but I just didn't know how to do the beginning of the battle. I'm not very good at explaining them and it was torture. I can say I probably enjoyed writing this chapter the least. I like the story aspect, but I had to do a lot of searching up the moves May and Drew's Pokemon know and then deciding on movesets for Abby and Savannah's Pokemon. It was very tedious. I hope you all enjoyed it nonetheless. Also don't be mad I made them lose! I just want that drive and struggle to work together as a way to give the characters goals. I don't want them to win every time either, it's just not possible for them too. Part of the process is for them to learn how to work together. Anyways, until next time,

P.S. since when did this become a Soul Eater fanfic? We got soul resonance from the mention of a wavelength, and the heavy themes of bonds. XD 

Also, funny, I thought this chapter was short but its sort of a longer one XD
