ARCHIVE: Fallen Angels (book 5 of my Batfamily Series)

I am no longer updating this book (I was planning on republishing it today once I had chapters 4-7 done and I was gonna update the rest tomorrow) I'm sorry, but I felt drained trying to finish and I didn't like the ending I had planned out. I don't think it was good to continue the story when it already had a good conclusion.

So, sorry Mariathecool itsquietuptown- (it's you were the only two that read it I think lol)

rosella76 made the cover.

I might bring this book back, I don't know (it's currently unpublished, thank you rraelle for the advice on instagram❤️)

I'm not in a great headspace; irritable and cranky is the best way to describe how I feel right now!

Anyway, premise:

Navi Zatara and the other members of The Team eventually grew up and became members of the JLA. As the fourth generation of superheroes... they have a lot on their shoulders.

Working as a private investigator during the day and being a crime fighter at night, in honor of her grandparents, John Constantine and Zatanna Zatara, Navi usually takes on strange cases involving the supernatural.

Taking on the case for a friend of her father's, Navi learns that his daughter and many others are going missing. Taking on the case, she expected it to hopefully be an easy open and shut case.

What she doesn't expect was for her or any of her friends to end up in a world where all their previously dead relatives to be alive.

But the more time they spend in this idyllic paradise, the more it turns into a nightmare.

Now this... will have to be one of the hardest cases Navi has had to solve yet.

CHAPTER ONE: Navi Zatara, Private Eye

Just wanted to let y'all know that I'm making this book third person. I don't know why, but I've been making a lot of my first person books third person lately (which by the way, there's only been one so far). I do find it odd that I even made first person books since I usually struggle with that in real life.
Anyway, with that out of the way... enjoy!

It was quiet in Navi's office. Aside from the ticking of the clock, always ticking, never stopping. It was enough to drive someone insane. The man sitting across from her, a friend of her father looks at her desperately.
"Please, Navi! My daughter is missing... you... you gotta help me!" Navi sighed, looking at the man's file. Like her father, he was an ordinary magician (compared to her heritage, it wasn't that impressive). But she wanted to help this man, as a favor for her dad... although a part of her believed that this was a dead end.

But... she wanted to give this man the benefit of the doubt.

"Alright. I'll help-I make no guarantees, but I will try to help you." The man's face lights up in relief, thanking her profusely. Navi nods and smiles politely and finally when he's left her office she shuts the door. Letting out a breath, she slides down the door in relief.

Her day was over-or at least her day job was. She didn't know what it was, but she seemed popular with many people, including dealing with supernatural elements.

Why? She may never know. At any rate-she looked at the clock, it was 5. The sun was starting to go down in preparation for the moon's return.

So... Navi went home.

TIME SKIP...

Technically, the house Navi lived in with her parents and aunt wasn't technically a home, since it could move anywhere, but no matter-she didn't question it.

She walked up to the house, finding the door locked, so she knocked on the handle (Zelda didn't seem to trust her 25 year old daughter to have a key of her own). As Navi waited, she glanced over at her grandparents' graves. It was shame... she never got to know them, never have a connection like her mom and aunt did.

Suddenly, the door opened and Zelda have her daughter a small smile and a tight hug.
"Welcome home! Aunt Ambrosia is making pea soup tonight. How was work?" Zelda asks as she lets Navi inside.
"Eh. Work was work." Navi replies vaguely as she shrugs off her tan trench coat to reveal a black t-shirt, deep blue jeans and a pair of black combat boots whose laces went up to her knees.
"Oh? Did you get a chance to meet with dad's friend?" Navi hums as a yes.
"I did. Same problem-so many people have lost children or relatives. Vanished, gone without a trace." Navi explains and Zelda nods.
"I'm sure you and the others will be able to solve it." By others Zelda meant Navi's former teammates when they lived in Mount Justice. Now, they were members of the JLA, after it was inherited by Zelda and her friends from their parents.
"I suppose." Navi murmured, following her mother into the kitchen as the smell of the soup filled the air.
"Ah, look who finally showed up!" Ambrosia quips sarcastically you her niece. Navi says a quick hello and her brows furrow.
"Where's dad?"
"Working." The two sisters answer.
"Oh." Navi mumbles, a bit disappointed, but Zelda doesn't seem to hear-giving her daughter a beaming smile.
"Want to sit down? It's warm and we shouldn't let it go to waste after all the time Aunt Ambrosia spent on it."

TIME SKIP...

The dinner was quiet, it was mostly asking about each other's days and Navi being vague about what happened at work. Suddenly, her phone buzzed in her pocket as Ambrosia was picking up her plate.
It was Jay: Urgent. Come to Watchtower-need you now!!!!

Navi stood up.
"I gotta go." She says abruptly, going into the hall to grab her coat. She came back in to hug her aunt and mom and gave her mother a kiss on the cheek.
"Come back home safe! I... I love you!" Zelda says, but the door is slammed before she can finish. She frowns, and sits down on a couch near the kitchen table.
"I wish she would just tell me what was going on. Do you think she's okay?" Zelda asks her sister. Ambrosia shrugs.
"I'm sure she's fine. Just give her time. You heard her-children and relatives are missing. Their lives are at stake-they need her right now." Ambrosia reminds her sister. Zelda simply nods, as much as she appreciates her daughter doing good... it doesn't make her any less worried.

CHAPTER TWO: Convening in the Watchtower

JINNY'S APARTMENT, GOTHAM...

Jinny felt the spines of the books, trying to decide what to read. It was around 7 or 8 pm. Nothing interested her on the TV, so she decided reading a book.

She sighed, not finding anything on the current shelf. Bending down, she looked at another. Picking up a couple, she observed the titles: Pride and Prejudice, Frankenstein, Fahrenheit 451, The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Shrugging, she picked up The Picture of Dorian Gray and put the others back on the shelf. Although she did have to wonder why she picked out these books in the first place.

Was she drunk? Was it late into the night when she made these purchases?? Perhaps she should have brought someone with her...

Not that Jinny had a problem with classics, it's just... romance, dystopian, horror and murder/horror didn't seem like a good combination of books to buy all at the same time.

She tried to read, but found herself getting restless, putting the book down beside her. Sighing, Jinny stood up and stretched. It was 7:29 pm.

She didn't know what to do. The truth was, she felt like she was suffocating in this apartment. All white, it felt more like a museum than a home.

It's been several years since her father, Apollo, finally died of dementia. She only hoped that her fathers would meet in some sort of afterlife, happy again.

The funeral and even his death were a blur to Jinny, all she remembered was crying on Scar's shoulder and Ambrosia reminding her that she may have seemed to lose everything, but she always had friends.

Jinny then glanced over at her desk-bills.

She was thinking of bills at a time like this... maybe she could move back to Opal City? Cowardly? Possibly. But she wasn't exactly being a coward if she went to somewhere she would be happy.

It would be better than staying her... remembering her fathers... thinking about what she could have done-knowing she could do nothing.

Suddenly-a knock was heard at the door. Blinking and walking over, Jinny opened it to reveal Navi.
"Navi?! What are you doing here??"
"I... I didn't want to go anywhere where someone knows me. I just... I need a change of scenery. Is it alright if I crash here?" Navi asks, looking up at Jinny.
"No. It's fine. I'd... I'd appreciate the company!" Jinny explains and somewhere Navi thinks there might be a cry for help in that statement.

Jinny didn't admit it, but secretly she was lonely, and still mourning her fathers. She didn't tell anyone that secretly she cried herself to sleep on more occasions than she would like to count. She didn't tell anyone that late at night she swore she could hear their voices. She didn't tell anyone that she was... tired. Just simply tired of acting alright when she wasn't. Tired of all the sleepless nights, tired of everything go downhill, tired of suffocating in this big house-

"Hey Jinny, I need some help! Where is the room?" Navi shouts with a laugh. Jinny blinks... she didn't even notice her old friend's daughter was already half way down the hall. Jinny seemed to be in another world.
"Com-coming!" Jinny replies, coming back to her senses.

THE NEXT DAY...

At 8 am, Navi was woken up by a loud crash. Running out of her room, she rushed into the living room to see Jinny lying with her chin resting on her knees as she stayed crouched near her desk. Jinny looks up, and Navi can see clear signs that she had been crying.
"S-sorry." Jinny apologizes, blinking back her tears as she stares blankly at the wall again. Navi turns her head to where Jinny is looking and then sees it.

Jinny had thrown a picture frame towards Midnighter's suit it seemed, but it had cracked into the bottom of the case holding Apollo's instead. They were close together in the center of the wall-it was an easy mistake.

Navi went over and picked up the picture frame gingerly, careful not to get shards in her feet or let any more shards fall into the picture. Navi observes the picture: it's of Jinny and her parents when she was younger-maybe 15? It looked like a carnival of some sort. Going back over to where Jinny is sitting, Navi gives her a small smile.
"You don't have to apologize." Navi whispers, giving her the picture. Jinny looks down at it, eyes glassy as she sniffles.

"I... I didn't mean to scare you." She says.
"It's ok-"
"No... it's not, Navi. I'm sorry for disturbing your sleep. Just... go back to bed." Jinny says, standing up to put the photo back on her desk and going into the kitchen to look for a broom and pan.

Navi doesn't listen and leans against Jinny's desk.
"Have you talked to people about this?"
"About what?" Jinny questions annoyed as she sweeps up the glass.
"About you... being like this."
"Like what?"
"Like you are."
"WHAT THE HELL IS SUPPOSED TO MEAN?!" Jinny shouts as she stares up at Navi, making the sorceress winch.
"...don't lie to me, Jinny. Don't lie to yourself either... you're not okay." Navi states in a calm and gentle tone. Jinny pouts and stares darkly at Zelda's offspring before going back into the kitchen.

She returns moments later, the broom and pan gone from her hands.
"I am ok... I am just fine!"
"Are you?"
"Why the hell are you questioning my mental state? What are you, a doctor? No? Well then why are you asking??" Navi pauses upon hearing the onslaught of questions before answering.
"You hit a picture frame into a glass case at 8 in the morning." Navi points out, holding out her hand to refer to the case. Jinny stares at it too, getting teary eyed.

"I'm sorry... it's just. I, I can't." Jinny says as her voice breaks.
"It's ok. We... I can get help. Do you want help?" Navi asks and Jinny goes quiet, before turning to Navi to give her a hug. Navi hugs her back, realizing that this is what Jinny needed.

Jinny just needed someone to hold onto and cry and just... feel okay for a little while.

LATER, HOUSE OF MYSTERY...

Zelda and Ambrosia rushed out of the house to find Jinny holding Navi's body.
"Is she dead?!" Zelda asks frantic.
"No, she just... fainted! I can't get her to wake up!" Jinny explains and Ambrosia stares intently at her niece.
"I fear that she may be like the others..." Zelda and Jinny stare up at Ambrosia.
"Others?!" Ambrosia comes back to reality and blinks.
"Ah. I didn't tell you two did I? Come on, the house can take us there."
"Take us where?" Zelda questions as she takes her daughter's body from Jinny's arms.
"Wayne Manor-I'll explain everything on the way there!" Ambrosia shouts as she's already halfway to the house.

Author's Notes

I didn't mean to update today, but here we are!

I actually had to stop writing as I started writing about Jinny's pain. I feel terrible for making her suffer through this much grief...

In fact, I think I've felt grief like that before. Wishing you could help someone is very hard to do when you know that you can't actually help them :(

Anyway, enough of the sad stuff. I am appreciative that I could actually explore this now that I don't have a first person formula. I think it helps bring more insight to other characters' perspectives.

It's also why my profile changed-I'll change it back soon (probably).

So... yeah. I have no idea when the next part will be out, but stay tuned for that!

Bye!

CHAPTER FOUR: The Disappearing Act (P2)

WAYNE MANOR

Jinny, Zelda and Ambrosia came into the Batcave a little shocked by what they saw. Lying in cushioned, white plastic pods were most of their descendants: Jay, Richard, Archie, Stephanie, Thomas, Opal, Harleen, Ty, Alex, Doe, Nora, Hal, Apollolina, Alice, Wally, Jade, Astra, Starr, Birdie, Lucius and Cruise-the only one that wasn't related to anyone was Lily. Beside all the pods were machines checking steady vitals.

Scarlett then looked up from where she was observing the pods with a stern expression beside her husband Derrick.
"Hi. Set her here." She said simply, tapping on the glass of the last pod in the front, referring to Navi. Ambrosia did as she was told (for once) and set her niece down gently before the glass door closed.

Jinny looked down at the pods and was a little disturbed. They looked asleep-maybe even dead.

"19 pods? How did you manage that, Scar?" Zelda questions, pulling Jinny out of her thoughts.
"We just kept getting more and more everyone. They're curtesy of one of Wayne Industries business partners." Scar explains.

"They look like coffins." Jinny whispers to Ambrosia, who nods solemnly in agreement.

Scar then stopped talking and looked over at Jinny and Ambrosia.
"Daunting aren't they?" She asks and they nod, entranced.
"Yeah... I feel the same way too." Scarlett replies, but in truth she meant that about everyone.

That was happened when you were children of some of the biggest crime fighters, you tended to lose a lot and gain so little. Fame and media attention was nothing compared to a parent's love.

Jinny jumped when someone grabbed her arm. Turning, she smiled when she found it was Theodosia.
"Sorry, didn't mean to scare you. I don't think you should look at them too long." Theodosia explains as her eyes show an expression of pain, glancing at her own daughter, Birdie, in one of the pods.

"How did this happen?" Ambrosia asks Scar, who shrugs.
"We don't know."

"That's why were are trying to figure out." A familiar voice explained. The women turned to see Althea, along with their other friends, walking towards them. Althea gave Ambrosia, Zelda and Jinny hearty squeezes as hugs, possibly crushing them if she wasn't careful.

Honey sighed as she looked at the pods.
"Our parents probably would've had this figured out by now." She murmurs, as she looks down at Stephanie and Thomas and Allen plants a kiss on her head.

Truthfully, they were all thinking it. It's been years since they took up their mantles, and it's been years since Birdie's death and it's been years since any of their parents were alive: they had no mentors, no encouragement. They had only themselves... perhaps this was what it was like for them too? So unsure and unconfident about abilities and powers.

"Maybe they could've. Maybe they couldn't. But we can't dwell on that, Hon." Janie says, seeming to come out of nowhere and give her a head an encouraging smile.

"So what do we do now then?" Jinny asks as Lucy stands beside Scarlett, her white heels clacking on the ground.
"For now... we have to find a way to get them back home." Lucy explains as they all look down at the pods, helpless and serious gazes mixed into one expression.

Author's Notes

Hey there! In case you didn't know, I took this book down for a bit and wasn't sure what to do with it.

Then last week, I got to thinking. So, last night I planned out the chapters and today I decided to sit down and write down all these chapters. Now that I have planned all the chapters out, this should go smoothly-hopefully!

Apologizes for spam in advance! I hope you all enjoy the rest of this book <3

CHAPTER FIVE: Paradise

Everyone awoke. They were no longer in pods-they in fact had no memory of ever falling asleep.

Instead, they awoke in an alleyway right outside an apartment building.

"Where... are we?" Harleen asks slowly as they start to get up. Navi squints up at the sky, the sun was out there somewhere beating down on them.
"I don't know." She replies.
What was clear that they were in a city.

Deciding without having to say a word to each other that the best course of action was to explore the apartment, Navi hesitantly opened the door. Her eighteen other teammates following.

It was small, but not very pretty. Dingy would be a good word to describe it: green peeling walls, a flickering fluorescent light above their heads.
It seemed... abandoned. Lost from the outside world-where were they anyway?

None of them knew. And they didn't think to ask, too frightened and terrified to make a sound, to question what was going on.

"Should we call out for someone??" Opal asks in a hiss akin to the sound an irate cat would make. Navi can see Stephanie shrug out of the corner of her eye.
"Can't hurt." She whispers to her cousin.

Without asking, Nora volunteers when they hear the sudden shouts of-
"HELLO?!" Nora shouts. For a minute, there's no answer. Then-upstairs there is shuffling.

Deciding to go for their gut instinct to not go up the stairs, they did so anyway. Curious as to what they would find.
And why they were here in the first place.

Up above, they found many, many apartment doors. Deciding to spilt and look at them, they entered their own separate apartments: not prepared to find something shocking on the other side.

Lily gasped as she saw who in there:
her parents, standing in front of her as though they had never left her.

The others had found their relatives too: Jay and Richard found Barbara and Dick/Cassandra and Jason. Archie found Damien and Hope/Stephanie and Tim with Stephanie and Thomas. Opal found Kate and Maggie. Harleen found Harley and Pamela/Edward. Ty, Alex and Doe found Alex. Nora found Barry and Iris. Apollolina found

THIS WAS NOT FINISHED AS I GOT BORED TRYING TO WRITE DOWN ALL THE RELATIONS.

Author's Notes

This wouldn't have taken so long if I had just not included who was related to who, but NOOO!
I just HAD to do it-

Sorry, I'm being a little salty with myself XD

CHAPTER SIX: Reflection

Navi woke up in the apartment of her grandparents. There was note at the foot of the bed she slept in. They had gone to do some errands and would be back soon.

She squinted at the morning light coming into the small, dirty window next to her and tried to see the outside but couldn't seem to see a thing with the sun.
"How can they live like this." She murmured, looking around at the apartment. She had no doubt there was possibly some mice gnawing at the walls.

She got up and looked around.
Where even was she? Where was her mom? Her dad??

Did they even know she was here? Was she in heaven? It certainly felt like it with grandparents here-only seen in photographs before this day-

What day was it even? What time was it?? Would she even be able too-

"Stop it!" She cursed herself, and slowly her heartbeat slowed as she stopped getting worked up over the questions. If she went any further, she worried she would starting thinking about the Anti-Life Equation she had heard so much about.

Deciding to just wait for her grandparents to return, she turned on the TV.

Soon, she was lulled to sleep.
Even though she hadn't felt tired before.

Zatanna woke her up, a warm smile on her face. Slowly, blearily, Navi got up. Sure enough, the shuffling of a grocery bag carried by John, had indicated that they did indeed go do some errands.

"You look tired, honey." Zatanna says, uncomfortably close to her granddaughter.
"What time is it?" Zatanna doesn't answer, just strokes her hair and repeats herself.

Navi knew something was wrong... but she didn't want her grandparents-whoever or whatever these people were-to get suspicious of her. So she just slowly backed away from her grandmother's affections instead of flinching.

"Does mom or dad know I'm here?" Navi calls out as Zatanna goes into the kitchen.

No answer.

So, Navi just goes back into the room she had occupied this morning, and slams the door shut.

Author's Notes

I listened to Pumped Up Kicks while writing this.

Perhaps the song fits the mood of this book-

I'll just see myself out.

BatgirlGeek❤️

P.S. By the way, the last chapter I'm gonna update today might take awhile since I'm trying to decide whether or not to delete one chapter.

This story is getting shorter and shorter and I feel the urge to delete it and just leave my Batfamily series at 4 books-

I think Lucy Quinn was the perfect conclusion. I don't why I wanted to write this story and I feel like I'm going insane (...or it's the 60 degree weather, idk).

OTHER CHAPTER TITLES:

PLANS FOR CHAPTERS:

Chapter 4-5: All the characters find themselves trapped somewhere and find their relatives. They think that maybe it's not so bad

Chapter 6-7: Navi questions her life. She and the others spend time with their deceased relatives.

Chapter 8-9: The group realizes their relatives don't seem genuine. It is slowly divulging into a nightmare and they think up a plan

Chapter 10: The true masterminds were Joker and Mr. Myxlplix. They fight and after being knocked out, Navi and the others leave. Lily finds her parents and they taunt her before turning into dust. Find the two villains behind her, Joker mentions something about being in hell and starts to burn from flames. She runs, terrified and finds herself on the roof of the apartment, with a canal beside it. Desperate, she jumps in and finds herself back in reality. She proceeds to tell the heroes everything that happened.

Chapter 11: The relatives are interrogated about the truth and become erratic and murderous. Back in reality, their parents try to decide what to do.

Chapter 12: Jinny steps into the simulation and finds her own parents taunting her. She eventually smashes 'Apollo's' head in with a black metal figurine. It is revealed that many people, including the one case Navi took in chapter one, are also trapped.

Chapter 13-14: They figure out a way to escape and think about the events.

Chapter 15: Navi and her mom sit near her grandparents' grave and reconcile. Soon, the others join them and they convene on a hill, to watch the sunset go down. Looking down at the graves from above, Scarlett asks if any of them wonder if they are being watched over. Jinny says that she hopes that they are and that they will keep them safe.

Maybe you like this book and want it to continue. I, sadly, do not.
I feel a hateful feeling looking at it and I don't know why. I've never felt that way about a book, EVER.

I don't know what will happen to it, but I do think I want it as part of my Batfamily series. Perhaps I will use the cover/book for another idea-

That could work actually...

I just feel like this book was just made from my head without an idea of where to go from the simple idea. It is a betrayal of the ending I set up with Lucy Quinn. And I want it to end on Lucy Quinn.

I was satisfied with that, and I still am.

So, in conclusion: this book most likely will not come back... but at least it's not lost forever.
