Whirring down the memory lane, the vivid memory of my elder son being rushed to the hospital fighting for dear life, gulping for oxygen, came afresh to my long gone traumatizing decades old wounds. The day when my son returned home from work early complaining of headache. "Mom, I just wanna rest my head and I will be alright in no time", he said as he took to his bed. Little did I know that I would be losing my son to the dark world of plastics...

A while later, I heard some noises coming out from my son's room as I rushed in; he was gulping for air, coughing and turning pale. I rushed him to the hospital but it was too late as he eventually sprawled on bed lifeless. That very minute I was left shaken and not believing what had met my eyes. Within just minutes my son died in front of my eyes and I was not able to do a single thing!

After autopsy reports I got to find out that as he had worked for a PVC industry and had been getting continuously exposed to the harmful components of plastics he was getting poisoned by the chemicals at quite a large scale.

Not only my son, many have lost their beloved ones to cancer, poisoned by plastic chemicals, ingestion of contaminated fish & instant cardiac arrest. It wasn't only the workers at the plastic industry, but the population as a whole was impacted. Few have been poisoned by the water bottles they frequently used which gave way to cancerous cells.

Marine life has been impacted vastly which has affected the food chain as a whole. Many breadwinners' major source of income was through fishing but then the fishing spots had nothing to offer whilst the family starved! It was a high time "Now or Never"! My South Pacific island nation was getting caught up in the chaos posed my plastic.

Looking at the statistical death recorded each year, the government had banned the use of plastics. Scientists have worked out a biodegradable alternatives and the plan for a non-plastic environment was executed. A type of suction has managed to remove all plastic toxins from the sea. Meanwhile, the rest of the world executed the same plan.

As long as my old eyes could see, drastic changes have been made after the ban of plastics. It has been decades and now my grandchildren are enjoying the plastic free environment. During picnics out at the shore, no plastics get entangled while out for a swim. With the price of many lives now the environment has turned like a fairy-tale story, clean and non-plastic. Nature has all the answers, and it had given us mankind with solutions too. Nothing is impossible; the first step is the stepping ladder towards a higher goal for a much healthier atmosphere. There were those ancient days, whereby plastic didn't exist, now that age has returned for the better.
