||. CHAPTER 5: SA'NE .||
The room was filled with immense silence. Rachael turned to look at her elder brother whose eyes were giving her a signal to stay silent. Turning her gaze up to the President, she took a few steps backwards, kneeling down to look into her father's eyes. Clearly, the President wasn't going to give any answers to them. Worries were written all over his face and it seemed that his eyes would be popping out of its place at the question. Rachael reached out holding onto her father's palms gently brushing them as she looked into his grey eyes which were similar to hers.
"Appa, what is it? Why does it bother you so much?" She questioned as she reached out gently straightening his hair. It was at that moment that she realised that her father had aged so much compared to the years before.
Her father ignored her questioned, only to tighten his grip on her. "Sa'ne. There must be something about it." He whispered to his daughter.
"Enough about this!" The President barked as he stepped out from his place. "This man is clearly mad. His test results had shown abnormal waves. I am sorry but your father must be placed in the Red Rack!"
"No!" Rachael protested and Arthur immediately went to join her. He stood in front of his sister whom he could see was losing her patience on this pointless conversation.
"With all due respect, Mr. President. There is no way to solve this if you lock our father in the Red Rack. We need to have more answers from him if you want us to figure out what is in his book and in those logs he had. My sister is right, these are sirens. It might be a myth to you, President, but it is the only thing which could explain this." Arthur spoke up confidently, his black eyes looked towards the President who was staring at him sternly, but the boy did not move a muscle.
"Arthur, you are one of the best researchers we have here. You cannot use myth to explain science and you cannot use myth to explain to the rest of the family members about their family's death either. How can everyone die except your father? He must be related to it." President Mc. Conner suggested as he looked towards the boy clasping onto his shoulders. "I know he is your father, but you need to separate between work and your relation to your families."
"Do you have a major in mythological and historical beings, Mr. President?" Rachael questioned out of a sudden and the President shifted her gaze towards the younger sibling.
Rachael stood in front of her brother and crossed her arms. "I can prove to you, she is a siren, a space siren to be exact. These lyrics and melodies are the only ways a siren can use to lure men and victims of theirs. We Earthlings might have advanced through science, but never forget that our there in the solar system, there are planets you have not venture and you might not know everything about them. Planet 14 as you say is a new planet. You sent a team of researchers including my father out there without our consent at first, that was a mistake and now, you are blaming the only survivor here who would be able to explain what is happening. I do not know if you have taken education before this or it was mere luck, but those who have learned back in Earth, Mr. President, we all knew that the very existence of sirens are dangers to any men around them. Planet 14 is the only planet proven to have space sirens. If you do not trust me, send me out, send me with another team to Planet 14 again and I will prove you about it that my father has nothing to do about their death."
Stefan looked up from the ground. His grey eyes looked directly towards her daughter's determination. He had always wanted her to be in the Medical Department, but she had taken a different path. She spent her time in the base for more than ten years and three years in the research department. Medic was not her profession, but Stefan was proud to have a daughter who would go for her dream. Arthur turned to look at him with fear in his eyes. He knew exactly why. They lose their first family in a mission here on Mars itself, their eldest child, Arthur's elder sister. Losing Rachael would be double the pain. The President who was lost for words stood at the side.
"Sa'ne." President Mc. Conner repeated as he looked towards Stefan. "How did you come across it, Captain Halton?"
Stefan chuckled. "It was whispering in my head. Someone was whispering in my head about it. Why? Are you afraid of it?"
Rachael turned towards her father before looking up at Arthur. He doesn't seem sane anymore to her. The way he spoke, it sent tingles down her spine and her hair began to stand up. She looked at her father who was laughing at the question, humming a melody again on his lips. The medicine he had taken, wouldn't it have a longer effect? She watched as her father stood up from his seat, his head nodding back and forth as he headed towards the book on the table, picking it up.
"You know why they are beautiful, unlike the rest of those living beings?" Stefan questioned. "Because they have a big heart. So beautiful like the moon in the skies. They sing a song to calm you down when they know you are in pain. No shouting. No screaming. Just singing."
President Mc. Conner turned to look at Arthur who shrugged. "Siren. Just like what my sister had mentioned. Space siren. Don't look at me. My sister is the only one who have studied mythological beings back then. If you want to know more, I do suggest you take up my sister's idea."
"Who do you think you are?" Jonathan barked. "We cannot simply send a team out for research. Who do you take my father for? He is in charge here not you."
"A kid?" Rachael started. "Just like you. Ignorant and selfish, ready to chase a goal you do not even know." Rachael scoffed as he turned away, looking at the President's face with a smirk.
"Enough! The both of you!" President Mc. Conner ordered as they both silence up. He took a glance at Stefan who had resumed at laughing and turned to look at both the kids. "I don't want to listen to any of your childish squabbles anymore. You!" President Mc. Conner pointed towards Rachael. "Explain the picture. If you have a different explanation from the results of my researchers, then you know what I will do."
"For a price." Rachael added.
"You do realise you are in no condition for a bargain. I could have just sent your father to the Red Rack and saved me some time, but I am giving you a chance." President Mc. Conner stated.
Rachael turned away. "No. If you want me to give you answers, I need something in exchange too. You are not the only one who needed answers here. I do too. So, if you want a fair play, Mr. President... I suggest you do a trade."
Jonathan glared at Arthur who shrugged at the sight of it. Clearly, the son is mad just like his father since he did not know who to blame. Arthur might have been the longest Halton sibling in the Research Department, but that doesn't mean he would know everything. His black eyes glanced towards the President who finally gave up since he is desperate for an answer.
"Alright, a trade it is. What is a siren?" President Mc. Conner questioned, pointing towards the book.
"Wrong question, President. You let the trader do the talking first," Rachael said in confidence only to have Jonathan stepping out to protect his father who waved his hands in the air.
"What is Sa'ne? You seem to be ignoring it. I want an explanation about it first."
President Mc. Conner squinted his eyebrows at the question. He refused to answer, but out of desperation, he decided to only give hints to the young girl who even have the guts to challenge him. Crossing his arms at the back, he turned around to look out at the window. Sa'ne; a hidden room in Roaming 95 where all the insane living things were buried in the room. It is located right below the first floor, making it the first underground space on Mars. Providing hints for both the Halton siblings, the President was shifting uncomfortably in his movement. He had kept the news hidden away from most of the people on Mars, now only to be revealed to a twenty-year-old teenager who holds the answer to the misery of the death of his best researchers.
"Now, it is your turn to pay up." President Mc. Conner spoke facing the young girl.
She nodded as she brushed her hair backwards, eyeing her father who was already chuckling and giggling, humming a melody on his own, a melody so soft, yet if it was put on a speaker, it would sound as if he was crying, asking for help in this merciless universe.
"Sirens," Rachael started. "They are mostly females. Dangerous and deadly to the men who ventured into their territory. They are undeniable the creatures of myths and legends, but now, we are talking about a new planet, a whole new level of survival species, who might have evolved throughout the years. Not forgetting in space. They sing songs so soft and melodious that it would lure men to their death bed. Strong or weak, all men are drawn to their beauty and voice. Unless, if you are beneficial to them, they will let you off, not without drowning you in their music. Like what they did to my father."
Jonathan chuckled as he stared at Rachael with unbelievable eyes. "You are talking about fantasy. There isn't a proof about it. Father, you can't possibly believe her!" Jonathan scoffed.
"Shut up, Jonathan!" President Mc. Conner barked as he looked towards Rachael. "I will send a team to Planet 14 again. If you say they attract males, why don't I send females?"
Rachael chuckled. "They will not appear if there isn't someone who interests them. This isn't a diplomatic play, Mr. President. Whoever started this, started a tug of war game with them."
"Excuse me," President Mc. Conner started, "Are you saying that I am the cause of it?"
"Sirens don't let anyone survive usually. If they could, then it is a sign they wanted something. Returning back empty handed, will start a war. Remember, Mr. President, you are not dealing with just humans anymore. You are dealing with a whole new level of beings. Space Sirens, I could call for now." Rachael stated.
President Mc. Conner turned towards his assistant who had recorded everything down. The Research Department doesn't seem to be doing any progress either way, so all he had to do now is depend on both the Halton siblings. Arthur could assist Rachael in their next expedition to Planet 14, but that would not seem right to send the both of them back towards Planet 14. He brushed his white hair nervously as he looked out towards Stefan who was already walking towards the window, his grey eyes studying the stars, humming a soft melody in his mind.
"There is no way back." Stefan started as his fingers clicked on the glass. "No way back unless you are sa'ne." He giggled and hummed a soft melody from his lips again.
Glancing at the man and back towards the two siblings, he breathed out a sigh. "Your father will stay with the Research Department. Rules as usual, Arthur you are not allowed to be in charge of this case. Rachael, we will refer back to you about the sirens soon enough."
"I am not giving out anything else." Rachael stated clearly. "It is me and my brother who should demand answers, since you are the one who have sent my father out to Planet 14 without our concern. We are the ones who should be making the demand, not the supply. Assuming that we are done here, can we take our leave?"
President Mc. Conner nodded, waving his hands as he motioned for the guards to let them to pass. However, just as Rachael took a step forward, Stefan ran frantically towards both his children like a lost man, tightening his grip on their waist mumbling words unknown to them. Arthur reached out as he soothed his father, assuring him that he would make sure all this will be sorted out soon. Stefan yelled at the President, blaming him for their separation as he cursed him wildly with gibberish unknown languages. Rachael felt her hair stood up at the inhumane voice of her father's.
"All shall fall, and none shall survive in these lands of red. We shall conquer again." Stefan muttered.
"Appa," Arthur called out gently as he looked towards his father. "I promise you. Rachael and I both are going to get you out of here. We will. Just give us more time."
Stefan giggled. "Remember. Love is love."
Once the guards ushered both Arthur and Rachael out, Stefan slumped down on the ground helplessly, his fingers dug in between his hair as he stared at the President who was muttering something towards his assistant. Captain Chen reached out, pulling the man in his arms as he guided him towards the chair. Stefan was picking on his own fingernails as he bit them bit by bit and giggled, humming the melody all over again.
Stefan giggled as he laughed, his cackles filled the room.
Shivers ran down Jonathan's spine as he took a glance towards his own father who was assuring his assistant about some process. Somewhere in between those grey eyes, Jonathan saw something painful and suffering. He looked up towards his father and headed towards him when Captain Chen left the place.
"You are allowing Rachael to go to the mission? Like for real? You do not know her, she..."
"Do I look like I have a choice? Name me someone who once mastered in mythology and historical beings?" President Mc. Conner challenged.
"We could..."
"This is her benefit. Don't mess with her. I need her to solve this problem. I have checked through the records of all inhabitants of Mars, she is the only one with such... illogical knowledge."
"It is illogical. Father, we are working for science, but now you believe that these sirens are the one who cause it? We can just put the blame on her father, saying that he is mad and killed his crew." Jonathan suggested.
"If only things were that easy, my son. We cannot afford any leakage." President Mc. Conner breathed in as he stared out in the space.
