||. CHAPTER 4:SANE .||

Those similar grey eyes stared right back into him, triggering unknown memories from the past few months. The taste of bitter medicine was still lingering in his tongue as he swallowed the pill which he had been sucking since the past few minutes. Burying his palms in between his palms, Stefan let a soft growl escaped his lips when he recalled nothing about the crash of his spaceship. The ghastly voice in his mind was still whispering the same words all over and over again, sending shivers down his spine. His fingers found their ways in between the sheets of his bed. Winding his fingers down the blanket, Stefan laid his body down on the sheets as he looked up onto the ceiling, meeting the similar reflection of his. The sound of his beating heart echoed through the glass room.

"Good day, Captain Halton." Dr. Song's cheerful voice echoed through the air as the older man glanced towards the lady with deadly grey eyes. Dr. Song cleared her throat, settling another set of pills for him. Those pills were the ones which helped stabilized his emotions and mind. Without those, Captain Halton would be yelling and screaming languages they did not understand, so pills and medicines were the only solutions they could use for now. Dr. Song depended on them to stabilized Captain Halton's gibberish talking and mad singing.

"Does it look like a good day to you, Dr?" Stefan questioned. "Drowning me with pills and liquids. What do all of you want from me? I did absolutely nothing wrong."

Dr. Song let out an apologetic sigh as she dragged the chair over to sit in front of him. "We had no choice. I was given orders. Now that you are feeling better, do you remember anything?"

Stefan remained silent. His grey eyes looked up at the ceiling, looking at some mini robots floating out in the skies. What did he remember? He began questioning himself about it. Doubting even his own existence for now, Stefan sat up on his bed, crossing his legs lazily. He remembered a lady so beautiful that her eyes were almost silver. Her lips as soft as feather, but there was something in between he can't quite put his finger on. Mike, Jack and a few of his other colleagues. Groaning at the pain on his head, he ran his fingers through his hair, gripping onto them tightly. The soft melody began to form in his head again slowly and the word slowly formed on his lips.

"Sa'ne. Do you happen to know anything about it?" Stefan questioned with his eyes closed as he buried his head in between his legs. "And a soft melody. A gentle song unlike Yiruma or anything I have heard before." When he heard no answer, Stefan looked up towards Dr. Song. "Sa'ne. You know anything about it?"

Dr. Song froze on the spot. Her brown eyes darted around the room before looking directly at the reports on Captain Halton's unstable brain waves. She shook her head, gulping down the guilt in her throat for hiding from an old friend. Shifting the spot of the pills and liquid, she settled her papers down on the metal table. "I don't know what happened out there, Stefan." She started, calling out for his name and the man looked up in his confused grey eyes. "I wanted to show you the book I have but, it is all in the Research Department. The President had ordered it to be sent to the Department, including all those logs. You would need someone else to have access to it."

"Arthur. He would know. But," Stefan closed his eyes, brushing his face with his palms. "I can't return like this. I cannot. I don't want them to worry. I have not met them for almost a year. I failed to be a father back then and even now. They will be disappointed..."

"No, Stefan." Dr. Song assured, reaching out to hold onto his palms. "Stefan, I wish I could help, but staying in the Medical Department would not bring any help to you. Here on Mars, everything is under the Research Department. We all go back to them."

Noticing the sadness in Stefan's grey eyes, Dr. Song felt guilt and pity in between her throat. First, she could not prevent an old friend from drowning him in medicines to stabilize him and now, she would not be able to give him any information on Sa'ne. She began to wonder about how did he knew about it? It was secured all these years from the citizens of Mars. Even the higher authorities would not be able to have access to it except for the President's himself and his trusted researchers, mostly consists of the workers related to his blood line. Pushing the smaller amount of liquid to Stefan, Dr. Song cleared her throat, pushing her fringes backwards.

"I am sorry I could not help, Stefan. I do not want to drown you more in those medicines. This one here would help stabilize your mind for the next six hours and after that, you are on your own. The President demands your presence the minute you are awake. I have prepared some clothing in the cupboard. Captain Chen will escort you there," Dr. Song said as she watched the man gulped it down without saying a word, the cup slipping off his grip and made a small 'click' sound when it met the ground.

"It is alright." Stefan spoke as he looked up to his old friend. "I do not need any more of this, Dr. I can't remember anything when I am sane. I would rather be mad. But, before I go mad again, I want to meet my children."

Silence ate up the atmosphere in the air. Dr. Song merely nodded. Stefan spoke nothing as he headed towards the cupboard to change into a pair of simple clothing. What was he doing in Planet 14? Apart from the researches, from the logs, laughters and beer drinking, something seemed to be missing in his mind. He let a soft groan escaped his lips. At least, for now, he remembered his children. They were mistakes he made before he left them alone in Mars without anyone to look out for them except for each other. He would love to speak to them again as soon as he can. Six hours more before he slipped into a world he never knew. Tying the knot on his shoes, he stepped out to see Captain Chen taking the papers from Dr. Song and bowed in respect to the man.

"Captain Halton." Captain Chen addressed politely towards his colleague. "Come on. President Mc. Conner is waiting for you."

With a slight nod on his head, Stefan bowed towards Dr. Song thanking her for the medicine before heading out with Captain Chen. They walked past several other colleagues whom Stefan still clearly remember during his first few days here. Unlike before, they were all now sending glances of pity and curiosity. Captain Chen turned towards his old friend as he reached out gently patting him on his shoulders. A huge pang of sadness passed through his heart. He did remember the first time he met him when he got down from BT 21-95 after such a long time. The craziness in his laughter, the smirked on his face and those glassy grey eyes.

"I don't need your pity, brother-in-law." He started as he tugged his palms into the pocket of his clothing.

"Stefan. I want to help you. I remember seeing you walking down the ship. It sent shivers to my spine. I know it wasn't you. Stefan, what you saw out there...."

"I can't explain it now. I have no memory about what happened before the crash. Nothing. Please don't ask me about it. If you want to help, bring me to my children." Stefan stated.

Chen nodded for a while. He could help with that. He had met Arthur and the eldest seemed to be taking in the news calmly. Scanning his card on the bar at the side, the door clicked opened. Chen was ready to open the door only to hear the sound of crashing glass from the inside. Regardless that, he stepped inside only to be surprise when he saw both Arthur and Rachael including Jonathan staring right towards their direction. The President was standing there speechless before he cleared his throat.

"Come in, please."

"I apologise if I am disturbing anything, President, but here is Captain Halton. He is awake and sane now." Captain Chen addressed with a bow before glancing at the Halton siblings who were staring at their father.

Rachael was trying to prevent herself from jumping herself on her father. All she did was held onto Arthur's palms tightly in hers, squeezing it with excitement burning in her veins. Though her face remained poker, her heart was beating so strong that she could hear the sound of it through her brains. Arthur tightened his grip around her shoulders as he looked at his long-lost father. There was no sign of madness in him, but he was pretty sure it was because of the medicine. The President was already sitting in his chair, Jonathan standing proudly like a gold trophy next to his father. Stefan fought the urge to cry at the sight of his two children. They had grown so much from the day he left. He made a mistake before and now, he would not make the same mistake again.

"Captain Halton." President Mc. Conner started. "Can you explain to us about all of this?"

Being the President he is, he showed no respect to Stefan. The book belonged to Stefan was thrown rudely on the table without mercy as if his patience had worn out into the empty air of Mars. Arthur felt the anger burning in his veins. He hated it when anyone would show disrespect to his family. How could he? Sucking in enough amount of air to calm himself down, he watched his father picking the book up in his palms. Stefan scrolled through the drawings, wrinkles began to form on his face as he tapped his fingers nervously on the book. Jonathan was throwing Rachael an angry look, still holding grudges on her for destroying his pretty face. However, the younger girl paid no heed to it. Her grey eyes fixated on her father who pushed the book back towards the President.

"I have no idea what this is," he said with a soft and calm voice, leaning his back on the chair. "I admit that this is my writing, but I have no idea about this."

"Excuse me, Captain?" President Mc. Conner questioned. "You are the one who wrote it. If you do not understand it, who will?"

Stefan glared at the President. "I am too sane for this. If you want the answers, meet me tomorrow." He started as he stood up, leaning close to the President. "Have you ever felt like your brains are fried? Like damaged wires in the electric circuit. It hurts, that you began to mumble about things way pass your conscious. When you have repaired it, it no longer hurts, but all you can remember is the calm storm you have."

President Mc. Conner eyed Stefan, studying his sane features. His grey eyes filled with determinations about his own answers. When Stefan had settled himself down, he shook his head. "No can do."

Jonathan had already reached out, his fingers flipping through the book as he began to laugh. He looked towards his father before throwing the book down on the table again. "This is nonsense. I have told you, you should send me to Planet 14 instead of him. Look at him. He brought fantasy. He is useless just like his daughter is. Dirty tricks."

Rachael glared at the boy, anger burning in her grey orbs as she untangled herself from her elder brother who was trying to catch her back. The clicking sound of her boots filled the air as she made her way towards the table, standing right next to her father and picked the book up only to be stopped by President Mc. Conner himself.

"You have no rights to touch it, Rachael. You and your brother are not allowed in this research, especially this one relating to your own father."

Rachael smirked as her fingers held onto the book, her grey eyes lingered up towards the President's eyes. "Of course, Mr. President. But, I do not play by rules. Your son challenged me on the base first and just because you are the higher authority, doesn't mean I have to lick your boots and ass to make you feel please about me. It is my father's, so this means it will be mine and my brother's too. Just like how you defend your son, I have my rights to defend my father. Have you not studied the basics of law, Mr. President?"

Jonathan was about to defend his father only to have Rachael smirked, "See, you get what I mean? You and your son play by a law so dirty that everyone else have to submit into it to survive."

President Mc. Conner stared at the younger girl with disbelief written all over his features. He was clearly challenged by the younger child who had literally, physically, practically and mentally destroyed his arrogance. Tightening his grip on the book, he hissed only to have the girl snatched the book away from him harshly causing him to stand there in shock. His assistant was ready to take the book from her but was stopped by the President himself.

"Let her read it. If she can't give me a slight hint about it, she is banned from the base." President Mc. Conner stated only to have her assistant nodding in agreement like some kind of favoured puppy.

Racheal studied the pictures carefully. Ignoring the unknown language, she looked at the faint pictures of her father's drawing before clicking her tongue in disbelief. Shifting her gaze towards her elder brother, Rachael gestured for him to join her. Arthur studied the drawings carefully. He began to whisper something to his younger sister and they were both discussing about the possibilities of the drawings. Rachael headed over to the President.

"This is not a mermaid. It takes the form of a mermaid, but this..." Rachael turned the page to the last one where there were lyrics at the side with an unknown wave drawn next to it. "This, Mr. President is a siren. In this case, she is a space siren. She is not a mermaid."

Jonathan blew a raspberry before chuckling softly. "Clearly mad, just like her father."

"Ancient mythologies. These are legends and myths which we do not know of their existence, Mr. President." Arthur added as he glared at Jonathan before looking at the President himself. "If you are solving this with science, I wish you all the best, but she is a siren just like what my sister had said."

President Mc. Conner turned to look at the siblings and added. "So? A space siren you say? How can you proof about it? Legends and myths are not real. We are living in the 34th century, do you think I will still believe in vampires, werewolves, fairies, mermaids and other fantasy creatures? We do not use fantasies to built an empire in Mars. We use science."

"Then, go ahead and use science to explain these lyrics and melodies." Rachael scoffed as she took a few steps forward towards the President, throwing the book at him while pushing her spectacles upwards. "Science is a way to ensure life's existence, but all these creations are by the Gods. These space sirens in Planet 14 are not easy to deal with."

"You cannot talk as if you know about this when you have no prove!" Jonathan barked.

"Sa'ne." Stefan mumbled looking at the President. "What is that?"
