Jane's Admirer: Part One.
It wasn't an unusual occurrence for Jane to discover flowers on her desk from time to time. Single ladies in the firm sometimes brought them for their boss along with their letters that confessed their love for him. 'Pathetic.' It was so cliche to Jane: professing one's feelings in hopes of winning over the guy they like? A guy they didn't know that well at that. 'Don't they know they have to GET TO KNOW a person to see if they love them or not?'
Jane had a point because no matter how many gifts the office girls showered their boss with - it all ended up the same: trashed. Ricky would throw the letters and gifts away discretely, to not hurt the women's feelings. Still, flowers came, taking up room on poor Jane's organized desk; something she hated.
This time, Jane will read the note, and find which lady had the nerve to set them on her desk. She would send them back with a letter of her own. She smirked, imagining the expression on the chick's face, thinking the boss sent her an uncaring reply. However, the note had her name on it, not Ricky's.
The vase held a bouquet of gladiolus, echinacea, orchids, and hydrangeas. 'Gratitude; strength; healing; and admiration.' Jane eyed the flowers, curiously. Learning the meanings behind flowers was a hobby of hers. However, she doubted the sender of the bouquet specifically picked these flowers to convey those messages.
Jane never received flowers before - not that she expected or wanted anyone to buy them for her. They were beautiful though. 'It's somewhat sweet.' She nodded to herself. Give her a break; she was a human after all.
The note on the other side was less satisfying. It read, 'To Jane Blair: the flower of the law.' It was lame and there was no name of the sender. No one for Jane to hunt down and rip into. Oh well. Jane figured she could burn the letter later.
Carefully, she lifted the vase and placed the gift in the corner of her little space, where there was the most light from the window. Afterward, she promptly got to work. It did feel good to receive a gift once in a while and she wanted to share the beautiful flowers with her beloved nephew.
She looked forward to it.
Ricky, on the other hand, thought differently. "You sure there's no name?" It was the seventh time he asked Jane. Like Jane, Ricky expected the flowers to be for him when he entered work, so imagine his surprise finding out they were for his secretary. Go on, imagine it. Funny, right?
Jane didn't find it funny. "Unless it magically appears, no." She snarked, dropping off her boss's espresso. 'Why does he care?' "Is it so odd sir, that someone would gift me a bouquet?"
'She got a point.' Ricky frowned, watching his secretary return to her desk. 'It's just odd to me.' Ricky was in a pretty good mood before he reached work. He had a great night's sleep. He ate some bomb food from his favorite diner and with Jane back from her days off, the office would be in order again. So Ricky came to work, whistling cheerfully, and with a spring in his step.
However, thanks to those flowers, his mood was now ruined. It shouldn't have affected Ricky Evens at all but it did and even that bothered Ricky. "It shouldn't disturb me...this much." He spoke to himself. 'Jane isn't bad-looking - plain - but not ugly. She has cute features.' He thought, confusing himself. 'It's just weird because she's my secretary...does that even make sense?' Throwing that weird thought away, his eyes drifted over to Jane's desk - to those flowers having a lovely sunbath.
Rumors spread fast throughout the firm. The thought of the plain secretary having an admirer made many laugh. It just seemed preposterous! Although, they didn't laugh loudly in case the scary woman was near. Facing her was the LAST thing any of the workers wanted.
"How could anybody want her? She's so uptight." A worker named Delilah chuckled while reapplying her lipstick.
"I know, right!" Her friend agreed, printing out some papers for their bosses. "How she became the closet to the boss, I'll never understand."
Although Jane was nowhere near to hear the two badmouthing her - her admirer was. He was at his desk, clacking away, pretending not to eavesdrop on the two chicks. 'If only they could see how amazing Jane truly is.'
Everett Pal wasn't anything special. He was short-statured with brushed-back hair, brown eyes, and a baby face that could be mistaken for a child. It was something he had often been made fun of since high school. It was also something that prevented the opposite sex from seeing him as anything more than a boy. It was very degrading.
Add that to the fact that Everett wasn't talented or had deep pockets, people often overlooked him...mostly females though.
So how did an untalented guy like Everett fall for a plain girl like Jane? It was only happenstance; A mere once-in-a-chance meeting that began the obsession with the brunnet. Everett liked to think it was love at first sight on his part. He'll even agree if Cupid had told him that Jane and he were destined to meet the way they did.
His love story began on the day before he started his new job. He was out shopping for appropriate work attire. It was a nice, cloudless day, and he was walking to the mall, listening to music. The young man didn't realize some thugs were following him until they pushed him into a nearby alley and began roughing him around.
They took his wallet but didn't manage to get away. Jane had noticed them push Everett into the alley. She wasn't one to get involved - that's why 911 existed. However, she mistook Everatte for a young boy, so she followed the men as she called the cops.
Before the thugs could do worse to Everett, Jane called them out. "Leave the kid alone." Of course, the brutes laughed at her and threatened her if she didn't walk away. Jane didn't take their threats lightly. What the thugs didn't realize was that the painfully plain woman they threatened would be their worst nightmare.
Another one of Jane's hobbies was fighting. She dedicated herself to learning various fighting styles, as well as self-defense maneuvers since she was in middle school. She knew what martial art styles were useful in a gun-to-hand combat and she wasn't at all against playing dirty if her opponent had the upper hand.
Plus, it felt so good having someone to unleash all the pent-up stress work's been causing her. She may have followed the two thugs in an alleyway, but only she and a stunned Everett made it out. Oh yeah, the cops made it in time too and took their statements.
That's how Everett met the infamous 'plain Jane' with his wallet intact and his heart beating out of his chest. 'She's the first person to notice me.' Everett sighed, love-stricken. 'And came to my rescue - like an awesome female knight! I can't believe how someone as amazing as her would take the time to help me and now we work at the same office! This has to be destiny!'
It gave him butterflies remembering his first day at work - Jane was his trainer. 'This can't be a coincidence, but poor Jane.' Everett eyed the spiteful girls that badmouthed Jane. 'This firm doesn't seem to realize what a gem they have. Maybe it's for the best they don't though. Then I can be the ONLY one who knows my Jane's amazingness. Yeah. Only me and I'll dedicate my life to making my love happy.'
The next day, Jane was greeted with a chocolate croissant - freshly baked - and a blonde espresso. They were her favorite things to order on her way to work. But she wasn't able to order it today, since she was running a little late. There was so much work that piled on during her weekend off. She got home late last night and woke up late this morning.
Underneath the espresso was another letter from her admirer. I thought you could use a pickier-upper. You were swamped yesterday and I don't recall you having lunch. The drink has a double shot of espresso and oat milk instead of regular - hope you like it.
"Still no name," Jane mumbled to herself, trying to think of who in the office would even know how she liked her espressos. Slightly disturbed but starving at the same time, Jane crumbled the letter and sat down. The breakfast was free, so of course she would enjoy it, as well as plan how to track down her admirer. The upside of the situation was it didn't mess with Jane's workload.
One sip of the drink revived her and she tackled the rest of the workpile Ricky left her. The day went on as usual. Jane keeping things smoothly running and Ricky, well, being Ricky. It was overall a peaceful day for the two.
Everett, on the other hand, was in turmoil. It made his heart sore seeing his lovely flower accept his gift - he remembered her order from when he shadowed her during training. Before dropping it on her desk, he even stole a sip to make sure it tasted right. Also why it pleased him to see Jane's lip touch the same lid his lips were. 'Our first kiss!'
Everett blushed, savoring the imaginary kiss. However, what agonized him, was Mr. Evens. His boss was far too casual with his beautiful angel - even calling her by a nickname. Everett would do anything to be on that level with Ms. Blair. Heck, he would do anything to be on the receiving end of her famous glare.
Heaving a heavy sigh, Everett finished his work and collected his things to head home. Heading towards the elevators, Everett had to pass by Mr. Even's office, which meant he had to pass by his beloved Jane's desk.
He had hoped to wish her a pleasant night as he passed by, but Everett didn't get that luxury. As Ms. Blair came into view, so did Mr. Evens. Much to Everett's annoyance, his boss was practically sitting on his girlfriend's desk.
'Get away from her.' Everett innerly growled. 'Stop being so close to my girl.'
Ricky wasn't a mind reader, so he didn't pick up on any of that. He was too focused on picking on his secretary. "Answer me, pleeeeeeeaaaasssse?" Evens begged with his best puppy eyes. "I can be a good wingman; let me join you!"
"No." Jane firmly announced. "That's highly inappropriate. Besides, I'm not going out for romantic purposes. I'm meeting up with a friend."
Stopping around the corner, Jane's stalker leaned into the conversation. 'She's meeting up with a friend.' Everett didn't like the sound of that, but like Ricky, Everett was curious about Jane's life outside of work. 'What kind of people do you hang out with, my dear?'
"I want to meet your friends too, Jane!" To Evrett's annoyance, Ricky clamped a hand on Jane's shoulder. "You met all my friends; I should be allowed to meet yours."
"I never asked to meet your friend." Jane pointed out. Calmly removing her boss's hand from her shoulder, Jane reminded her boss, "I HAD to meet your friends. Unfortunately, that came with babysitting a drunk Mr. Evens." Efficiently, shutting her boss down, Jane collected her things. "Besides, you already met my nephew, why are you so curious to meet everyone else in my life?"
Ricky shivered, remembering the kid, but Jane had another point. Why was he so curious about his secretary and who she associates with outside of work? Ricky figured he was simply worried for Jane. They still didn't know who left her those gifts and Ricky didn't want anything to happen to Jane.
'Some people are crazy.' Ricky nodded inwardly, waiting for Jane to head out first, before following behind her. 'It's scary to think someone can just glance at another person and become obsessive over them.' He thought, unaware that he was following Jane to her car.
He only realized it when he pressed the unlock button on his car remote and his alarm went off on the other side of the parking lot. Jane stared at him as if he was dumb. Turning beet red, Ricky lamely waved bye, then ran to his car.
Jane shook her head, amused. Her boss could be something else at times. You better be careful, boss. She got into her car and started it. 'You keep being clingy like that, I might think you're my stalker.'
However, Jane knew her boss wasn't the stalker; if he had given her those flowers, the whole world would have exploded. Jane snorted, picturing everyone in the office suddenly losing their minds at the thought of their boss holding ANY sort of romantic feelings for her. 'I'll probably lose it too.' Jane mused as she drove. 'If my boss is clingy in business relations - I don't want to know what he's like in a romantic relationship.' "Best of luck to the chick he ends up with."
Jane smirked maliciously as she peeked in her review mirror. There was a reason she let it slip that she was going out tonight. Since her stalker wouldn't reveal himself, she would fish him out.
Her plan was working. As soon as she left, she noticed a busted-up Camaro following her. It remained two cars behind, in the lane beside her, but it was following her. Each turn she made, a second later, it turned in the same direction. "Patience." Jane reminded herself. "All good things come to those who wait."
During work, Jane had contacted some friends of hers and together, they had devised a plan. And since she had to meet up with them tonight, why not use that to their advantage?
Parking in her apartment parking space, her long-time best friend was already there waiting for her. "Jane!" Quinn Sawyer practically jumped out of the vehicle.
"Hey." Jane smoothly walked to her extroverted half. "You brought the stuff?"
"Of course!" Jane's friend engulfed her in a hug."I'm so excited you called! How have you been?"
Jane smiled. She missed her friend as well. Returning the hug, Jane thanked her. "You always come through for me, Quinn." Despite being always busy, Quinn reached out to Jane almost every day. If Ricky wasn't spamming her phone - Quinn was. "Come on. Let's get inside."
