Episode 4

THE WINDOW OF SURVIVAL

Eunhye and Sae Joon Hyun found themselves struggling in the grasp of the oppressive silence broken only by the distant moans and shuffling footsteps of the undead. The air was thick with the smell of decay and fear. They had faced zombies before, but never in such overwhelming numbers and never this close.

Eunhye’s breaths came heavy and rapid. She glanced back over her shoulder at the advancing horde, her eyes wide with terror. Sae Joon Hyun, standing a few steps ahead, turned to her and put a finger to his lips, signaling her to stay silent. The gesture was firm yet gentle, a reminder that noise could spell their doom.

The zombies, grotesque and rotting, moved slowly but inexorably forward. Their skin hung in tatters, revealing the sinewy muscles and bones beneath. Eyes, or what remained of them, glowed with a mindless hunger. Some were missing limbs, dragging themselves along the floor with their remaining appendages, leaving trails of putrid flesh and dark, coagulated blood.

Eunhye's mind raced as she tried to recall the little details from their past encounters. Each zombie they had faced before seemed to be more cunning and evolved, but she prayed that these were not like the ones they had barely escaped from before reaching the safety of the camps. Those others had been terrifyingly fast and coordinated, a nightmarish escalation of the horror they had already come to expect.

Sae Joon Hyun, maintaining his composure, quietly shifted to the right, moving with the precision of a shadow. He made not a single sound, his footsteps carefully placed to avoid the creaky floorboards. The zombies, fixated on the door they had just closed, remained oblivious to his movement. Their dull eyes stared blankly ahead, and their moans continued in a monotonous chorus.

Satisfied that the zombies weren't as evolved as the ones they had encountered before, Sae Joon Hyun exhaled a small, almost imperceptible sigh of relief. He turned his head slightly and caught Eunhye's eye. With a subtle gesture of his hand, he signaled her to follow.

Eunhye nodded, her eyes wide but determined. She took a cautious step forward, then another, moving silently toward him. When she reached Sae Joon Hyun, she instinctively reached out and grabbed the back of his shirt, her fingers clutching the fabric tightly. The contact grounded her, giving her a small measure of comfort in the midst of the nightmare.

Eunhye stayed extremely close to him, her body practically glued to his for safety. She was used to zombies—she had faced them countless times before—but this was different. The sheer number of undead crammed into the room was overwhelming, and the knowledge that she had only Sae Joon Hyun by her side made the situation even more daunting.

Sae Joon Hyun came to a halt, standing perilously close to the horde of zombies. They were now almost directly beneath a high window, their only potential escape route. The door they had hoped to use was locked, the relentless pounding of their struggle against it a constant reminder of their dire situation.

Sae Joon Hyun stole a quick glance upwards at the window, its glass dusty and cracked but still intact. It was far above their heads, requiring a daunting climb to reach. He then looked ahead, the zombies mere feet away, their decayed forms a grotesque wall of death. One wrong move and their fate would be sealed.

He turned to Eunhye, his expression grim but determined. He nodded towards the window, signaling their only chance of survival. Eunhye’s eyes widened in horror as she followed his gaze. Tears welled up, and she shook her head, trembling.

Eunhye bit her lip, tears spilling down her cheeks. The window seemed impossibly far, a cruel joke in a nightmarish reality. She glanced back at the zombies, their dead eyes staring vacantly, their jaws working as if in anticipation of fresh prey. The thought of those clawed hands reaching for her was too much to bear.

Sae Joon Hyun’s mind raced, the weight of their situation pressing down on him like a physical force. It was a risky idea—perhaps even an impossible one—but he knew it was their only way to escape. As he stood there, close to the horde of zombies and nearly beneath the window, regret washed over him in waves.

Why had they let their curiosity get the better of them? The room had seemed promising, a potential haven or at least a place to find their missing friends or team members. But the stark, empty whiteness of the place should have been a warning, a signal that something was terribly wrong. They should have turned back the moment they saw it. Instead, they had ventured inside, lured by hope and desperation.

Sae Joon Hyun clenched his teeth, anger boiling within him. He hated himself for bringing Eunhye into this perilous situation. It wasn’t just his curiosity that had driven them; it was hers too. They had both been so eager to find answers, to reunite with their comrades, that they had ignored the warning signs. Now, they were paying the price.

The room was a claustrophobic nightmare, the walls closing in as the undead drew closer. Their decaying faces were twisted in expressions of mindless hunger, eyes glazed over with a sickly film. The air was thick with the stench of rot and death, making every breath a struggle.

Just then, one of the zombies lurched forward, its movements erratic but purposeful. It was inches away from Sae Joon Hyun, close enough for him to see the mottled, decomposed flesh hanging from its bones. The creature sniffed the air, as if trying to catch his scent, its head turning slowly toward him.

Sae Joon Hyun’s heart pounded in his chest. He could feel the cold, clammy presence of the zombie as it hovered just a heartbeat away. The creature’s breath was a putrid gust, a reminder of the death that awaited if they made a single wrong move.

He held his breath, hoping to remain unnoticed. The zombie’s nostrils flared as it sniffed again, its head bobbing closer to Sae Joon Hyun’s shoulder. Time seemed to stretch out interminably, each second a torturous eternity.

Eunhye, standing just behind him, clung tightly to his shirt. She could feel his tension, his fear, and it mirrored her own. Her eyes were wide with terror, her body trembling. The slightest sound, the smallest movement, could draw the zombie’s attention fully to them.

And then, to their utter astonishment, the zombie turned away. It hesitated for a moment, its head tilting as if listening to an unheard call. Then, without a glance back, it began to shuffle away from the window. The rest of the horde, as if compelled by some unseen force, followed suit. They moved with a strange, unified purpose, the first zombie leading them like a grotesque pied piper.

Sae Joon Hyun watched in disbelief as the room gradually emptied. The relentless moaning grew fainter as the zombies departed, their footsteps a grotesque symphony of shuffling and dragging. It was as if a dark cloud had lifted, and the air in the room seemed to lighten, albeit still tainted with the stench of decay.

He held back a sigh of relief, forcing himself to stay silent until he was sure the danger had passed. His shoulders, tense with fear and adrenaline, finally slumped in relaxation. The weight of their narrow escape hit him all at once, and he had to brace himself against the wall to keep from collapsing.

Eunhye, standing beside him, let out a shaky breath. She could feel the knots of fear in her stomach begin to untangle. They had come so close to death, yet somehow, miraculously, they had survived. She glanced at Sae Joon Hyun, her eyes wide with a mixture of relief and lingering fear.

Both of them turned back to glance at the zombies. The sight that met their eyes was bizarre and unnerving. The undead were now converging on the door, piling up against it in a grotesque heap. Their movements were frantic, almost desperate, as if driven by some unseen force compelling them to escape the room. The scene was eerily reminiscent of cheese stacks toppling over one another, a chaotic mound of decaying bodies.

Sae Joon Hyun and Eunhye exchanged a quick, bewildered glance, then looked up at the window together. The high, narrow opening seemed their only viable escape route, despite the sheer improbability of reaching it.

Determined to find a way out, Sae Joon Hyun made a decision. He gestured for Eunhye to stay put beneath the window while he moved to the opposite end of the room. The zombies were now fixated on the door, granting them a precarious reprieve and leaving the rest of the room relatively safe to navigate.

He moved cautiously but swiftly, each step deliberate as he crossed to the far side. The room, though now devoid of immediate threats, still exuded an aura of danger. Every shadow seemed to hold potential menace, every creak of the floorboards a reminder of the undead's proximity.

As he reached the opposite end, Sae Joon Hyun paused, surveying his surroundings. The plan forming in his mind felt desperate, even absurd. Running and jumping to reach the height of the window sounded like a fool’s errand, but in their dire circumstances, it was the only option he could see. He sighed in irritation, his frustration palpable. He couldn’t believe he was contemplating such a reckless maneuver, but the situation left him little choice.

He turned back to Eunhye, who was watching him with wide, anxious eyes. “Stay there,” he mouthed softly, not wanting to attract the zombies’ attention. “I’m going to try something.”

Eunhye nodded, her expression a mix of fear and determination. She trusted Sae Joon Hyun, even if his plan was something she wasn't aware of. “Be careful,” she mouthed back.

Sae Joon Hyun took a deep breath, steeling himself. He backed up a few steps, measuring the distance. The zombies at the door continued their mindless assault, oblivious to the humans’ presence for the moment. He knew he had to act quickly, before the horde’s attention shifted back to them.

Sae Joon Hyun took several measured steps back, preparing himself for the desperate attempt. His heart pounded in his chest, each beat a reminder of what was at stake. He knew the plan was risky, maybe even impossible, but they had no other choice. With a deep breath, he sprinted forward, putting every ounce of his strength into his run.

As he launched himself towards the window, time seemed to slow. The world around him blurred, and for a brief moment, he believed he could make it. But then, reality crashed down hard. Instead of reaching the window, he collided brutally with the wall. The impact was jarring, sending shockwaves through his body. He fell back, landing with a sickening thud on the cold, hard floor. Pain exploded in his head as it hit the ground, the sharp agony overwhelming his senses.

Eunhye watched in horror as he fell. The sight of Sae Joon Hyun hitting the wall and then collapsing was almost too much to bear. She screamed, her voice piercing the tense silence of the room. "SAE JOON HYUN!" she cried out, her voice filled with terror and desperation.

Ignoring the danger, she slid across the floor to his side. Crouching next to him, she gently cradled his head in her trembling hands, her eyes wide with fear. Blood trickled from a gash on his head, and his face was contorted in pain.

Her scream had drawn the attention of the zombies. Their heads snapped towards the sound, their eyes flickering erratically, like a glitching screen on fast forward. The horde, once aimlessly pressing against the door, now turned in unison towards the two vulnerable humans. Their movements became more coordinated, more purposeful, as they surged forward, driven by an insatiable hunger.

Eunhye’s heart raced as the zombies closed in. The room was filled with the sounds of their relentless shuffling, their guttural moans growing louder with each passing second. She looked down at Sae Joon Hyun, who lay sprawled on the floor, grunting in pain. His eyes fluttered open, filled with a mix of confusion and agony.
