Chapter 14

ESCAPE? CHAOS!

The night had descended into a scene of chaos and terror as Jay's whispered words barely pierced the thick air, his voice trembling with fear. "They have evolved into monsters..."

Charyeong's heart raced in her chest as she surveyed the eerie rooftop, feeling like a prisoner in this unknown residence. "Now what do we do?" she questioned, her own voice jittery with anxiety.

But before any answer could be found, a strident caterwaul cut through the darkness, echoing across the funeral of snarling thoroughfares. "OVER HERE, BEASTS!" The voice belonged to Jaeyeon, a beacon of defiance amidst the encroaching nightmare.

As the creatures slithered and lurched towards the provoking voice, Jay hastily boarded a jeep, signaling Eunhye to drive. With a surge of adrenaline, she navigated past the advancing horde, screeching to a halt under the roof of the house.

Minji, agile and determined, threw a rope up in the air, her command clear: "HOLD." Yuri, instinctively responding, grabbed the rope and swiftly fastened it around the chimney, securing their escape route.

Meanwhile, Yon, with nerves of steel, unleashed the contents of another glass bottle, the liquid raining down on the grotesque creatures below. They retreated momentarily, providing a slim opportunity for the group to descend and join Jay in the jeep.

But their respite was short-lived. A honk shattered the fragile calm, signaling imminent danger. Yuri glanced behind her, her grip on the door tightening as Minyoung raced towards them in another vehicle, the fiends hot on her trail.

The shadows swirled and convulsed around Minyoung's vehicle, trapping her within their rotten boundary. With fury in her eyes, she brandished her pistol, firing into the mass of twisted bodies. Sparks flew as bullets found their mark, showering her in thick, gooey blood.

"GET AWAY FROM ME!" Minyoung's words echoed through the night, her fear masked by a ferocious determination. Eugene's voice trembled as he muttered, "...Minyoung...is scary..."

Yon signaled Eunhye with a thumbs up, a silent acknowledgment of their next move. With a burst of speed, Minyoung leaped from her vehicle, emitting loud noises that drew the attention of the pursuing fiends like a siren call.

She crashed through the doors of a nearby house, racing through the hallways to the backdoor, slamming it shut behind her. Ji-hoon swiftly locked the front door, sealing them off from the encroaching horrors outside.

"Okay?" Hailey's voice was a fragile thread of reassurance in the midst of chaos. Charyeong nodded, her fists trembling as she crumbled her skirt in her grasp.

Yuri pulled Eunhye into a tight hug, gratitude and relief washing over them both. "Thank you," she whispered, her voice choked with emotion.

With a sense of urgency, they drove towards the safety of the store, leaving behind the nightmarish landscape and the horrors that lurked within it.

***

[Location: Seoul South Korea
Unknown convenience store]

The convenience store, once again, stood as a bastion of refuge amidst the chaos that engulfed Seoul. Inside, the group of survivors huddled together, their faces etched with exhaustion and fear. Charyeong's voice trembled as she spoke, the weight of their situation palpable in her words.

"It's tough," she began, her voice barely above a whisper. "This is hard..."

Jaeyeon shifted next to Eunhye, a silent yet reassuring presence in the dimly lit interior. With practiced care, he rolled up her sleeves, revealing a deep gash on her arm. A small gasp escaped Eunhye's lips as Jaeyeon exposed the injury, the harsh light of the convenience store illuminating the raw wound.

"Creep," Eunhye muttered, though there was a hint of gratitude in her tone as Jaeyeon began to apply medicine to her wound.

"You know I'm not," Jaeyeon replied calmly, his movements steady and deliberate as he tended to her injury. "How'd you figure it out?" Eunhye questioned, her gaze flickering to the blood-stained sleeve.

"You tell me, noona," Jaeyeon responded, his eyes fixed on her arm as he worked. "It could be from those things..."

"Doesn't hurt to check," he added, his tone gentle yet firm. Eunhye nodded, a tense scoff escaping her lips as she acknowledged the truth in his words.

Their conversation was interrupted by Sae Joon Hyun, his voice cutting through the air with urgency. "How did you all manage to find us?" he inquired, his gaze piercing as he looked from Eunhye to Jaeyeon.

"Jaeyeon tracked you," Eunhye replied simply, her eyes meeting Sae Joon Hyun's. Jaeyeon shrugged, his expression unreadable. "A detective's gotta do what he's gotta do."

The focus then shifted to Yon, as In-ha posed a question about the acid he carried in a bottle. Yon explained calmly, his demeanor relaxed despite the gravity of the situation.

"Oh, this? It's a glass bottle, as you can see," he began. In-ha pressed further, her curiosity piqued by the unexpected revelation.

"So I went ahead to get some food from the cafeteria back when we were stuck in the school," Yon continued. "One of those things entered in, and in haste, I threw the water can at him. It fell back crawling to the corner. And so I carry water with me. Acid makes it better 'cause you know it might just burn them... if it's strong..."

The exchange between Yon and In-ha was interrupted by a silent conversation between Jaeyeon, Eunhye, and Sae Joon Hyun. Their eyes met, conveying a depth of understanding that transcended words.

Their eyes darted around, silently conversing with each other through subtle glances and shifts.

"He is insane," Sae Joon Hyun's internal voice declared, his eyes narrowing slightly as he observed Jaeyeon.

"That is what I first thought when I met you, Joon," Eunhye's silent response came, her eyes rolling playfully.

"Hey! I saved you from that officer," Sae Joon Hyun's eyes shot back, a hint of indignation in his gaze.

"You had absolutely no reaction, you know," Eunhye's eyes widened in mock disbelief, a smirk tugging at her lips.

"Hmpf," Sae Joon Hyun's eyes flickered away, feigning disinterest.

Meanwhile, Jaeyeon's gaze shifted towards Yon, a thoughtful expression crossing his face.

"Don't you guys think Yon has been acting weird since the Hailey group joined us?" Jaeyeon's internal voice questioned, his eyes flitting between his companions.

"Yeah... how did we understand what you said though..." Eunhye's eyes widened in confusion, her eyebrows furrowing slightly.

"She's right. That's a very long...sentence, Jaeyeon," Sae Joon Hyun's eyes twinkled with amusement, a smirk playing on his lips.

"So are yours, Hyeong," Jaeyeon's eyes sparkled with mischief, a playful glint in their depths.

"How are we able to converse at all?" Sae Joon Hyun's eyes widened in mock incredulity, his eyebrows shooting up in amusement.

"I don't know, Hyeong. Ask the author," Jaeyeon's eyes twinkled mischievously, a grin spreading across his face.

"Don't break the fourth wall. Let's talk about Yon," Sae Joon Hyun's eyes narrowed in mock admonishment, a playful glint in their depths.

"Oh my bad, Hyeong. Sorry readers," Jaeyeon's eyes widened innocently, a playful smile tugging at his lips.

"Dumb," Sae Joon Hyun's eyes rolled playfully, a smirk playing on his lips.

"Shut up, psycho Hyeong," Jaeyeon's eyes danced with laughter, a playful glint in their depths.

"Hey! What are you doing?" Yuri's voice broke the tense atmosphere, her question directed at Eunhye. Eunhye quickly shook off the momentary distraction, a sheepish smile playing on her lips as she replied, "What? Oh, nothing, nothing."

As the group settled in, Sae Joon Hyun's voice rang out with a sense of urgency. "Guys, jokes aside. I hope you saw what we saw," he said, his tone grave.

"What did you see?" Yuri's voice cut through the tension like a breath of fresh air, her tone lighthearted as she twirled her eyebrows in a comical fashion, mimicking her eyes in a playful animation.

The effect was immediate, as laughter bubbled up from the group, breaking the somber atmosphere that had settled over them. Each member of the group except Sae Joon Hyun joined in, their laughter echoing off the walls of the convenience store, a brief respite from the horrors that surrounded them.

"UGH! THE CREATURES WERE HOLDING WEAPONS," Sae Joon Hyun's irritated and loud yell shattered the fleeting sense of normalcy, plunging the room into a tense silence.

Jaeyeon's somber words confirmed their worst fears, casting a shadow over the room as they grappled with the implications of their discovery. "You are right. They hold weapons now. I am positive they can't use it yet, but they soon will be able to."

With the weight of their discovery heavy upon them, In-ha suggested a temporary retreat, a chance to rest and recuperate from the harrowing events of the day. The group acquiesced, sinking into the corners of the structure, exhaustion pulling them into a fitful sleep.

But as they lay there, exhaustion weighing heavy on their limbs, doubts crept in. Were they truly the ones responsible for safeguarding the country? They were students, civilians, with no military training or expertise.

Yunha, unable to find peace amidst the tumultuous thoughts racing through her mind, sat up with a sigh, rubbing her tired eyes. With a determined resolve, she rose to her feet and made her way to the back of the store, drawn by an inexplicable urge to seek solace in the quiet of the night.

Peering through the keyhole in the backdoor, Yunha was met with an eerie silence that hung heavy in the air. The once bustling streets lay deserted, devoid of the dancing, groaning figures that had become a haunting fixture of their reality. With a quiet resolve, she unlatched the door and stepped outside, the cold night air sending a shiver down her spine.

"Hey. Why are you out here?" a voice broke the silence, drawing Yunha's attention to Zera, who sat huddled on a bench against the wall of the store.

"I could ask you the same thing, Zera Park," Yunha replied softly, her eyes fixed on the starry sky above.

"Just... not sleepy," Zera murmured, her voice barely above a whisper as she curled up tighter against the cold.

Yunha nodded in understanding, her gaze drifting back to the dark expanse above. "I thought... maybe... just maybe if I slept and woke up in the morning, this nightmare would be over... but I guess we are living it until whatever chooses us not to..."

The weight of her words hung heavy in the air, a somber reminder of the grim reality they faced. Yohan's voice, choked with emotion, broke the silence as he joined them, his presence a solemn testament to the burden they all carried. "I haven't even graduated yet and I'm already serving the country."

"Why are we doing this..." Zera's voice wavered, the question hanging in the air like an unspoken plea for understanding.

Hailey's sudden appearance brought a renewed sense of purpose, her words a beacon of hope in the darkness. With a determined resolve, they rallied together, each one stepping forward to join the fight against the encroaching nightmare.

"Noona?" Yohan's voice was uncertain as he climbed into one of the waiting jeeps, unsure of his own motivations.

"Because I want to make the ending of this nightmare possible. Let's finish this," Hailey declared, her tone firm with conviction.

As the group prepared to depart, Eunhye stepped forward, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face with a determined expression. "Me too," she declared, her voice firm as she made her way towards the waiting jeep.

Yuri followed suit, her movements graceful as she joined Eunhye, a determined glint in her eyes. "Well then me three," she chimed in, her voice tinged with determination.

Yon, ever the cheerful optimist, skipped towards them with a playful smile, his eyes alight with excitement. "Me number after three~" he exclaimed, his voice filled with infectious enthusiasm.

Jay, the quiet observer, made his presence known with a calm demeanor as he walked into the scene. "Four. Just say four," he stated matter-of-factly, his tone conveying a sense of readiness for whatever lay ahead.

Sae Joon Hyun, the enigmatic figure, joined the group with a casual shrug, his hands slipped casually into his pockets. "Ah. You guys are here as well," he remarked, his tone nonchalant yet tinged with a hint of uncertainty.

As they nodded at each other, their emotions were a tumultuous mix of determination, apprehension, and resolve.
