Annabeth missed him. She missed everything about him, from his messy black hair and his shimmering green eyes to his troublemaker smile. She even missed the way that he would carry her around the apartment, upside down, not setting her down until she confessed her undying love for him.
She missed him even more now that she was going to be the mother of his child.
But her loving fiancé had just left to travel to Afghanistan, no more than 83 days before. Annabeth had no contact with Percy except for the letters he had been writing for her at the start of each month.
The young couple wasn't doing well financially, especially after moving into an apartment in New York City. Percy had gotten an offer from an officer down over in Afghanistan and he had to take it. Annabeth still remembered the day he told her he was leaving.
Percy sat up, covering Annabeth's bare body with the linen sheet. "Annabeth, darling, I need to tell you something."
"Yes, Percy?" she answered tiredly.
"I'm leaving soon."
Annabeth's lip wobbled. "You're breaking up with me? But...you just proposed. We were getting married, Percy!"
"No, sweetie, I'm not leaving you. I'm leaving New York."
"W-what? Am I coming?"
He shook his head, reaching over to brush a curl from her face. She leaned into his hand.
"An officer in Afghanistan contacted me, Officer Mars. They want me in the war, and when it's finished they'll help us financially. I've been thinking, and I have to take it."
"Percy, you accepted this without even consulting me?" she asked, now both upset and furious.
"I had to. You would have convinced me not to go."
"Of course I would. I love you! We could have figured this out together! What if you get yourself killed out there?"
Percy reached for her hands, but Annabeth recoiled. She yanked the sheets off of the bed and covered herself completely, jumping off of the bed. Percy stood up too. Annabeth threw his boxers at him.
"Get dressed and talk to me. Why are you leaving?"
He slid his underwear on and stared sadly at his girlfriend, his fiancé, his love. "I already told you, sweetheart. I know that we've been struggling financially. You love your job and our home, and I couldn't ask you to trade them for anything. I have to make this sacrifice, Annabeth."
I know times are gettin' hard
But just believe me, girl
Someday I'll pay the bills with this guitar
We'll have it good
We'll have the life we knew we would
My word is good
"Oh, Percy. When do you have to...leave?"
"In one month."
Annabeth sobbed, spreading her arms. Percy entangled her in a hug. "I know, Annabeth. I love you. Everything is going to be alright."
Percy left almost three months ago, directly after an amazing time in bed that led to Annabeth being impregnated. Now, during every pregnancy symptom, she was painfully reminded of her loving fiancé and everything he gave up to keep her happy.
She would only be happy again once he was back in her arms.

Annabeth sat at her desk and opened the letter assigned to her.
Dear Wise Girl,
Your birthday is coming up soon. I wish I could be there for you when you open your present. Yes, I bought a present for you three months in advance. I've never been so prepared in my life, I'm sure you're raging with excitement.
I miss you, my dear. You must know I do. I think of you every day, every hour, every minute, every second. You are so beautiful, even more beautiful than the night sky in the city. I still love you with all of my heart. I stay up most nights, wondering if you still love me.
I've been keeping up my spirits by thinking of how beautiful you are, and how wonderful it's going to be when I see you again. I can't wait to shower you in kisses and show you just how much I love you again in a much more effective way than writing it on a scrap of paper each month.
I met a nice soldier here. We're in the same campground, and his jokes keep my spirits up in the fields, as do you. Sometimes when I think of you I get happy, anticipating the next time I can see you, but sometimes I get sad, wondering if I ever can see you again.
I wish you would write back to me, but I know it's difficult for you. It's difficult for me, too.
I love you, Annabeth. I miss you with my whole heart.
Seaweed Brain
I'm a thousand miles away
But, girl, tonight you look so pretty
Yes, you do
Times Square can't shine as bright as you
I swear, it's true
Annabeth wiped her teary eyes and folded the letter back up, tucking it inside of the envelope and then into the box where she had kept the previous two. Without failure, Percy had managed to make her happy and sad from miles away.
Annabeth really wished she was able to write him back, but she wouldn't. She refused to tell Percy he was going to be a father over a letter, and that was the first thing she wanted to tell him as soon as she could.
Suddenly a wave of nausea overcame her and she rushed to the bathroom, spilling her breakfast into the toilet. She sobbed, a whirlwind of emotions overcoming her. She just wanted to see her loving fiancé again.

Oh, it's what you do to me
What you do to me

Annabeth was spending her birthday alone for the first time in eight years. That's how long she had known Percy. They met at the young age of twelve at a silly summer camp, and Annabeth didn't regret any of it.
When the two had first met, they hated each other. It was quite funny to look back on, actually. By the end of summer, they had grown to become great friends and even began hanging out at school. Percy asked her to be his girlfriend on his sixteenth birthday. Annabeth said yes. Percy proposed on New Years Day, three and a half years later. Annabeth cried and said yes.
Now, after being engaged for six and a half months, she was all alone. But when she checked the mail after eating her cereal that morning, she had been happily surprised. Another letter from Percy had arrived, along with a package.
She laid back on her bed and tore open the envelope.
To my wonderful Wise Girl,
Before I start saying how much I love you, I am committed to writing something as payment to my fellow comrade, Leo. He gave up a letter to his family this month so that I could write you an extra letter, and I am forever endowed to him. When I explained how important this was to me, he said it was no big deal. He just doesn't get it. But I'm still thankful. Now that that's over...
I am so insanely in love with you that it hurts. I hope you won't be sad today. I hope this letter doesn't make you sad. I don't want to be the cause of your sadness.
I got you a gift. Hopefully, you haven't opened it yet. I want to explain something. One of the things I got you before I even left, to remind you of me. As for the other...I got a date for something very important that will make you very happy. We have an end date for the war. I get dismissed on the day after Thanksgiving. They're sending me on a plane to London. You can open the box now.
Annabeth sat up, wide-eyed. She had an idea of what could be in the box but still wasn't entirely sure.
She slid her nail through the tape fastening the box shut and popped it open. Inside was another smaller envelope, as well as another smaller box.
Annabeth slid the lid off of the box and gasped. A beautiful silver chain laid there, going through an outline of a small heart emblem. She immediately undid the clasp and clipped it around her neck.
She then opened the envelope and pulled out the contents. Instantly, tears formed in her eyes. A ticket to London, England, scheduled for the 22nd of November.
Annabeth began reading the letter again.
I'll be seeing you at the airport in 134 days, my love. 19 weeks. Under 5 months.
I hope this is a good enough present. Do you like the necklace? I thought that it was simple enough for you to wear every day to remember me. Whenever you get lonely, you can toy with it as you re-read this letter and all of the letters you have. It'll be as if I'm right there beside you.
Happy birthday, Annabeth.
Seaweed Brain.
Don't you worry about the distance
I'm right there if you get lonely
Give this song another listen
Close your eyes
Listen to my voice, it's my disguise
I'm by your side
Annabeth sniffled, a grin overtaking her face. She was going to see her fiancé again, in 19 weeks.
*****
The following Monday, Annabeth had to get up for work. She was only twenty, so she had two years left of school. Still, she had a part-time job as an intern for a very famous architect in Brooklyn. She was very busy, as well as pregnant.
Annabeth was about 14 weeks pregnant. Her baby bump was really starting to show, and she could feel the unwelcome stares of strangers everywhere she went.
When Annabeth reached the office, she searched for her best friend, Thalia. She also worked at the office, although that was solely because of her parents and nothing to do with her interest in the work.
Thalia had been her ride or die best friend since they were in the second grade. She had been very supportive during Annabeth's pregnancy, especially since Percy wasn't able to, although Thalia didn't really get the concept of love.
Annabeth understood what Percy had written about Leo not understanding why a letter would be so important to the couple. Some people had never experienced such a powerful connection, and would never feel a love so great. It was a shame.
Our friends would all make fun of us
And we'd just laugh along because we'd know
That none of them have felt this way
Annabeth caught the gaze of her female best friend and smiled brightly. "Hey, Thals," she greeted.
"Hi, Annabeth One and Annabeth Two," Thalia responded, bending to rub Annabeth's rounded belly.
Annabeth laughed. "I can't believe how convinced you are that it's going to be a girl."
Thalia smirked. "It's an aunt's intuition. You're sure you don't want to know when we go to the appointment this weekend?"
She nodded. "I told you I don't want to know anything unless Percy knows."
Thalia rolled her eyes. "Yada yada, whatever you say, Annie."
"Wait, I never told you, did I? Percy has a release date!"
"Really?"
Annabeth nodded frantically. "Yeah, the day after Thanksgiving."
"Wow," Thalia breathed, "Annabeth Two'll be busting out of you by then."
She laughed. "Yeah, that will be when I'm over 30 weeks pregnant. That's crazy to think about."
Thalia smiled. "You two are going to be the best parents ever."
Annabeth bit her lip. "I sure hope so."

Wise Girl, my beautiful fiancé,
Something has come up. I know that I am scheduled to come home by the end of the month, but Officer Mars has informed me of a potential attack of the airport where I and several of my comrades are planning to leave from. I really hope that it isn't as it seems. Even if it is, I will make my way to you by the 22nd. I swear it on my life, I'll see you before December.
I cannot wait to see you, my love. Have I told you how much I love you lately? I'm sure I have, but it wasn't enough. I am in love with you. You change my world for the better, and if I could make you feel just a small bit as good as you make me feel I'd feel complete.
I can't wait until this is over, until school is over, until we can just live our lives how we want. I'm thinking a beachside home, right in Montauk, with two stories and a hot tub. Three little kids running around, all of them adoring their epic mother who gives them the world. I think I want to be a cool dad, and you can be the uptight mother. (Except I'm sure things will end up switching because you know how I feel about Estelle)
I want you to be happy. Try not to miss me too much. It's not good to worry.
I love you, Wise Girl.
Seaweed Brain
A thousand miles seems pretty far
But they've got planes and trains and cars
I'd walk to you if I had no other way
Annabeth smiled. Oh, the irony. Here Percy was, talking about having an amazing family and life in a few years. Meanwhile, she was sitting in her bedroom, a baby ready to pop out of her. She was sure that he would be the protective dad, though, and that thought made her smile.
Two more years and you'll be done with school
And I'll be makin' history like I do
You know it's all because of you
We can do whatever we want to
Another thing her fiancé talked about that Annabeth couldn't help was how much she missed him. She had spent practically every day with the silly boy for over eight years, and he thought he could up and leave and her life wouldn't change? Sure, the letters helped her cope, but Annabeth loved the boy. Of course she would miss him.

You be good, and don't you miss me

Annabeth lurched forward in her seat. The plane was landing, sending nausea through her entire body, not only from the sudden impact, nor the pregnancy symptoms, but also from the fact that Annabeth was seeing her fiancé for the first time in eight months.
Eventually, she was allowed to unbuckle and exit the plane. As she reached for her carry-on luggage, she winced.
"Here, let me get that, dear," said a young woman.
Annabeth smiled gratefully. "Thank you, ma'am."
The lady smiled back, passing the bag over. "I wish you the best, sweetie."
As the lady wandered off, Annabeth spiraled into her thoughts. In less than a month, she was having a kid. In less than an hour, she was seeing her lovely Percy.
Annabeth sighed, making her way off the plane. Out of the aircraft she went, then finally onto stable ground. She honestly felt like she could kiss the ground. She hated heights. She remembered that Percy's fear was ten times worse, and wondered how he was coping.
After grabbing the rest of her luggage, she slowly waded through the large crowd and made her way to a seating area.
Annabeth texted Percy her location, grinning as she pressed send.
Within ten minutes, tears were streaking down her face. There he was, stalking toward her like she was the best thing in the world. Then, about ten feet away, he stopped.
His face was beyond astonished. For the first time, Annabeth was concerned about whether or not Percy wanted to have a kid. She had always known that kids were in their future, but how would Percy feel about the timing?
Suddenly, Percy did something Annabeth hadn't seen in a very long time. He started crying.
"Oh, Annabeth," he breathed, running over and tugging her into a tight embrace.
"Percy," she sobbed, wrapping her wobbly arms around his waist.
He kissed her neck, her cheeks, her nose, and pressed a long, tender kiss to her lips.
"I love you," Percy told her, brushing their noses together. Then, he stooped to his knees and held her large stomach. "And who is this?" he asked quietly.
Annabeth was still crying heavily, fat teardrops racing down her cheeks. "Our child," she whimpered.
Percy grinned. "Well, I sure hope so," he murmured sarcastically. "Will you tell me more, Wise Girl?"
She rolled her eyes, laughing through the tears. Of course Percy hadn't matured. He would always use jokes and sarcasm as a way to lighten the mood, even in times like this.
"I'm over eight months pregnant, so I'm literally about to burst. Thalia knows the gender, I do not. It's yours," she added teasingly.
Percy laughed, wiping his eyes with the back of his hand while standing up. Suddenly, Annabeth began crying harder. She missed his laugh.
He cupped her face with both of his large hands and gently wiped beneath her eyes. "I love you so much, my dear. Please don't cry."
But the tears wouldn't stop. Annabeth held open her arms and Percy stepped into them.
"I missed you," she whispered, "even though you told me not to. I couldn't help it. I love you."
Annabeth felt him smile against her hair.
"I missed you too, Annabeth. Why don't we head to the hotel? I think we need some time to talk."

I've got so much left to say
If every simple song I wrote to you
Would take your breath away
I'd write it all
Even more in love with me you'd fall

"Okay, one more push, Annabeth."
There were a few grunts. A gasp. Crying. Wailing.
The doctor chuckled. "I hope you're ready to be a mother, Annabeth. Look down."
The baby was immediately swaddled up and showed to its mother. Annabeth sobbed. "So beautiful," she murmured.
The nurse cradled the baby and rushed it over to the bed to clean it up.
Percy squeezed Annabeth's clammy hand tightly. "You did so well, my love," he whispered, kissing her tenderly,
She clamped her eyes shut. "Shut up and go see our child."
He breathed out a shaky laugh and rushed over to the baby.
"Oh my gosh," Annabeth whispered. "Oh my gosh."
A couple of minutes later, Percy came back over, this time cradling a beautiful little baby.
Annabeth's face lit up as she stared into the stunning green eyes that mirrored her husband's loving gaze. Percy grinned and set the baby on Annabeth's chest, tears streaking down his adoring face.
"So, do you two have any idea of what you'd like to name your beautiful baby girl?" one nurse asked curiously.
Annabeth bit her lip, looking down at the child. She switched her gaze to Percy. "Why don't we name her...Delilah?" she suggested.
The nurse smiled. "That's such a pretty name," she admitted.
Percy softly smiled. "It's perfect. Welcome to the family, Delilah."
*****
"She's amazing," Annabeth whispered, still in awe of their creation after a few months.
Percy chuckled, throwing his arm over her shoulders. "Of course she is. Have you met her parents?"
She laughed, wiping some drool from the corner of Delilah's mouth. "She's just like her father...a messy sleeper."
He rolled his eyes. "What a lovely wife I have," he drawled.
"You better believe it," Annabeth retorted.
Now that things were back to normal - well, as normal as they could be with a child at the age of 20 - the young couple had resorted back to their sarcastic ways. Of course, they still were loving with each other when the other would wake up in the middle of the night with a flashback from Percy's time away. Percy was also very caring when it came to Annabeth's moods. Even so, the two were acting like young kids again, and Annabeth loved it.
"You know," Percy began, "this kid is going to change the world, just like her mommy," he cooed.
Annabeth smiled, brushing a wiry blonde curl from Delilah's small face. "I sure hope so. She's certainly changed ours."
You know it's all because of you
We can do whatever we want to
"To a great life," Percy said, squeezing Annabeth's hand with one of his own and letting Delilah clasp his finger on his other hand, "and many kids to come."
Hey there, Delilah, here's to you
This one's for you
Annabeth smacked his shoulder. "You just want to bed me, don't you, young man?"
"Not in front of the baby, Annabeth," he playfully scolded. Then, he whispered, "But you aren't far off."
