Chap 11

These next few chapters are going to be action packed.

If spiderman isn't in the MCU anymore, I'm boycotting it IDC. DISNEY YOU FOOLS

Annabeth's pov:

"Annabeth and Leo."

Crap, I thought as my frown deepened, and I muttered curses under my breath. I hadn't seen that one coming, I definitely hadn't seen it coming.

Leo didn't either, as his face was even more puzzled, and he was looking at Piper quizzically. Piper shot back a shrug, pointing at Chiron with her free hand. I turned towards the centaur, he was just standing peacefully, a small smile on his face.

If the choice of this was random, then my theory was right. I, Annabeth Chase, had the worst luck ever. I groaned silently, sitting back down with a thump. I didn't want to seem miserable, risking the fact that Leo would think the worst, but I just couldn't pretend to be glad when it had all come to the worst.

The sun wasn't even beating down on me like before. Some of the rays were shining on my hair and face, though it was only a few and the calming winds cancelled it out. Today was a peaceful day, some of the birds chirping loudly and disturbing the silence, though their harmonious sounds only made this a more nicer atmosphere.

Except for the announcement. The announcement was horrible, and it brought my happy mood to an end.

An Ares camper shouted at his placement, causing the whole camp to roar. One Aphrodite girl was shouting at her partner, saying she wasn't 'pretty enough' to work with. I scowled at that, she was the same girl who jeered at me in the pavilion. A Nike camper was arguing about his partner, who was a shy Apollo kid, apparently too scared to do anything.

I was too shocked to argue, only staring at the floor dejectedly, kicking at the clumps of grass that stuck out.

"So," Leo said, and I turned towards his hopeful face. "We're partners."

He scratched the back of his head and I noticed his arm was a bit oily from grease. Must be from working in the Haphaestus cabin, I thought. I realised I had caused an awkward silence, and I quickly replied back.

"Yeah," I said, giving a weary smile. "Wonder what the event's going to be."

Leo shrugged. "So do I."

"Ok then!" Piper shouted from the front, causing everyone to go silent. "Today will be a series of courses, from agility, to strength, to balance and whole lot of other things that are specialised with each cabin." Some cabins cheered at that. "This won't just be one day, it will be for a number of days and -"

"What do you get if you win?" A Nike kid asked impatiently.

Piper rolled her eyes, but carried on. "You, and your partner, will decide the fate of the losers." Some people groaned.

"That's not a big enough prize!" An Ares kid shouted, most campers agreeing with me.

I stood my ground, wanting Piper to carry on.

"I wasn't finished." Piper rolled her eyes. "Anyways, the people who do win will get the grand prize of . . ."

"Visiting olympus and having full access!" Piper shouted, and the whole camp roared in approval.

Even I was shocked, sure most campers on urgent quests could visit olympus to speak to the Gods, but never the whole area. Now guaranteed full access, I knew the whole camp would do whatever it took to gain that prize.

"The first event starts tomorrow, be ready." With that, Piper left and everyone started looking for their partner.

I turned to Leo, I didn't care about the past, I wanted to win. "You ready to win?"

Leo smiled mischievously. "Was that even a question?"

I smiled and I gestured for him to follow me. "What are we doing?" Leo asked me, as I walked past some gear.

"We're going to investigate." I decided.

Leo turned his head to the side. "That's against the rules."

"Correction." I said. "That wasn't in the rules."

Leo shrugged. "You're the smart one. I'm just the mechanic."

I didn't argue with that, just delving into the storage, trying to find something useful.

"Huh." I said, finding a bag filled with eggs, eggs the size of my head. I carefully checked the tag at the bottom, not wanting to crack them. "They came here two days ago."

"What are they?" Leo asked.

"Gods almighty, they're drakon eggs." I scurried away, though the chance of them hatching now were unlikely.

"We'll have to fight drakons?" Leo was shocked, but I didn't blame him. Those things were huge, so fearful that looking them in the eyes would paralyse you, their spit containing acid, so acidic it could dissolve your skin right to the bones.

I shrugged. "Probably." Leo looked ready to panic. "But," I hastily added. "We could be wrong."

Leo scrunched his nose. "There's no other reason for the camp to have dozens of drakon eggs."

I nodded. "We'll have to put that into context." I peered closer at the eggs. "There's a few cracks on the side of every single egg, which means they'll be hatching today."

"How'd you know that?" Leo whistled in approval.

I titled my head to the side. "I actually don't know."

I heard a rustle, and I knew that some of the drakon eggs were moving, maybe even starting to hatch. Leo looked at me, and we both walked out of there, turning to see if anyone was watching.

"What do we do now?" Leo asked.

"I'm headed to the library." I pointed at the building opossite me. "I need you to grab a few supplies."

I looked at him pointedly. "You can build, right?"

Leo gave me a puzzled look, then shook his head and patted his toolbelt, already answering my question. "What's the occasion?"

I told him of my plan, and he rubbed his hands together mischievously.

"I like your way of thinking."

. . .

"You've got your supplies?" I asked him.

Leo pointed at the bag next to him. "Yep."

"Now we need somewhere to work." I turned to him. "You got any ideas?"

Leo thoughts for a second. "The woods?"

"Where monsters are lurking everywhere." I raised my eyebrow.

Leo sighed. "I don't know, let's just go back to the shed."

Reluctantly, I followed him back. There was definitely no space for all our equipment, but I guess we had to adjust. Adjusting meaning me sitting on the table, constantly craning my neck in fear of smacking it on the ceiling and Leo on the floor, shrieking at the number of cockroaches that were by his feet.

We worked for hours, opening the door every few minutes to see if it was time. I had to inch away from Leo though, sometimes he would just spontaneously burst into flames, and I was not ready to become BBQ.

I had taken a few books from the library, skimming through them and trying to proceed all the information at once. This was a crucial step for taking today's victory, and I wasn't ready to become second best.

"You done yet?" I asked Leo.

Leo pointed at a piece of wire. "This thing won't turn on, it has the same frequency, so I don't get why it's not working."

"Give it here." He passed it to me, and I looked all over the circuit, careful not to touch the naked wires.

I then noticed the batterie's misplacing. I pointed at it for Leo to see. "There's no resistance. Ideally, if there is no resistance, for example, shortcircuit is connected across an dc source, infinite current will flow as V=I/R, and R=0. Practically, if you connect a wire directly across a battery, it will start heating." I pointed at the lamp. "If you put that circuit into the lamp, it would probably blow up."

Leo raised his eyebrow. "When did you become an expert in Ohm's law?"

"Last night."

(If you guys don't get this subtle reference, you are dead to me)

Leo patched it up, and smiled when it worked. "It works!"

I smiled. "Now, all we have to do is hope that the drakon eggs will be used in today's event."

Leo's smile wavered. "What if they don't use it?"

"I have a plan for that."

. . .

Chiron trotted over to the middle of the woods, everyone standing around him. "Today's event will be solely based on knowledge."

Most of the Athena kids, including myself, cheered and the rest of the campers groaned in frustration. Leo looked at me pointedly and I smiled back.

"Now, the next few sentences I will say deserve no shouting." Chiron declared. "If there is commotion, I will end this event and we shall be going back to our normal lessons."

The whole camp became silent, a few whispers here and there.

"There will be drakon eggs, laid all over the forest. Most of them will be hatched, revealing small compared to their full length, yet still dangerous drakons." He paused. "They will be guarding their siblings that are still waiting to be hatched."

I titled my head to the side. Even though they were monsters, and committed evil, they still cared for their siblings. Huh.

"You will have to retrieve one egg, and that egg is specially marked for it is the last born. Now, drakons believe that the last born is the fittest, so the other ones hatched must care for them deeply."

"What will the last born egg look like?"

"Gold." He emphasised.

"Now, on your marks!" I looked at Leo, and he nodded determinedly.

"Get set!" I went into a running position.

"Go!" Leo and I both stopped, and waited for everyone to run past. We both smiled a little, knowing that our plan had worked.

Those drakons were made to kill and were alert, the first few campers that managed to find the nest would be attacked almost immediately.

Leo turned to me. "This way," he pointed behind us, and we both ran back there.

Leo's specially built armour were behind the trees, most people already has theirs but we weren't taking the risk. People would probably look at our armour, and think we were cheating.

And we weren't, we were just using the context to its advantage.

I stopped at the tree, picking up the armour. We both put it on quickly and quietly, ignoring the shrieks of campers and the drakon roars.

Our armour were specially painted, bright red and a light blue. Those would make us camouflage with the drakons, their eyes still developing so they couldn't make out our figures, only the colour. Instantly, they would think of us as their siblings and wouldn't kill us.

"Come on," I said. "We need to get behind the nest."

We trudged towards it carefully, the drakons had managed to hoard off every single camper that came, some were even starting to become injured.

I gazed at the golden egg, illuminating the flora around it. "You see that?" I whispered to Leo, and he nodded still gazing at the egg.

A lone camper appeared out of the trees and tried to stealthily grab the egg, tried to. One drakon caught up to the boy and hissed at him, without hesitation, the boy smartly ran away.

"There were much more eggs in the pile." Leo noted.

I nodded. "They must be around the forest, they know we're here."

Leo turned to me. "Ready?"

I nodded, and ran to the tree opposite him, my back grazing a little on the rough bark.

"Now!" I whisper shouted, and the trees glowed a bright orange as Leo burst into flames.

Hazel told me he was a fire user, and I was pretty skeptical of that. The short, scrawny joker kid was a fire user. That one thought made me smile, a bit unnecessary due to our surroundings.

About fifty of the drakons turned towards Leo, and he quickly stopped. He had gained their attention, and they were staring quizzically at us.

One drakon slithered up to us, and we both stopped moving out of fear, closing our eyes to make sure we didn't get paralysed. Sure, they were still young, but we weren't looking to take too much risks.

I strolled over to the middle and grabbed the egg, only then did they realise what we were doing. A drakon hissed at me, poison hurtling towards me. I quickly turned, and it sprayed my back. I thanked Leo for his amazing skills, noting that the armour was poison resilient. The drakon stopped for a second, as if thinking, why you no dead? I used that as my advantage, and lunged my dagger at his neck, and the drakon withered away into dust. The drakon's scales were still developing, so it was much more easy to penetrate their skin compared to a fully grown drakon.

The other drakons stared at me, though I kept my eyes only on their mouths, forcing them not to look up. Eventually, they went back to fighting the other campers, who were confused as to how we weren't getting sprayed at.

"Leo," I turned to him, shouting his name. "Now!"

One drakon managed to break a rock in half with its jaws, and threw it at me with all its might, I luckily went behind a tree, some of the debris scratching my face.

Leo burst into flames, and all of the drakons screeched in horror. Yet again, they were just born, meaning that their eyes were incredibly vulnerable. They carried on screeching, and I smiled knowingly.

I ran to the golden egg, only to find it gone.

A cheating, disgusting, son of a -

"Go, go go!" An Ares camper shouted at her teammate, who was running with the egg.

I sprinted to him, the egg was weighing him down and the Ares girl was too far ahead to notice. Using my dagger, I chucked it at him and he only just managed to avoid it, scratching his elbow instead. The boy still cried in alarm, and tripped over a rock.

I stopped running. The Ares girl had noticed this and was looking at the egg, then stared at me determinedly. She started to speak. "Oh, so it's a stare-"

I ignored her and sprinted to the egg,  the Ares girl shouting in disagreement. "You cheat!" She screamed at me, the amount of weapons she had were slowing her down.

I sprinted to the line, Leo beside me and the drakons screeching behind us. One drakon was seriously fast, managing to slither next to me. Come on, come on, come on.

We were inches away from the border, and the drakon knew that. In a flash, it opened its jaw wide and was ready to bite. With one more push, I jumped into the border, my legs aching in reply, and the drakon roared in rage. Please don't die, please don't die, please don't die. I opened my eyes, and realised I was inside the magical border, the drakon behind me roaring in rage.

Leo was right beside me, and he was laughing in joy. "We did it!" He cried. "It worked!"

"You cheated!" The Ares girl screamed. She had a nasty cut on her arm and I figured it was from the drakon.

Chiron trotted over to us, a wide smile on his face. Most of the campers were sitting dejectedly on the floor, injuries everywhere. They stared at us in awe, but the Ares camper was jealous, and she stumbled over to me.

"Annabeth and Leo have retrieved the item!" Chiron held both of our hands up, and I smiled triumphantly.

The camp reluctantly clapped for us, and I wasn't anything but happy.

"Chiron, they can't win!" The Ares girl shrieked. I realised that she was Clarisse, too shrouded in armour that her identity was unknown previously.

"Clarisse, sit down." Chiron ordered.

Clarisse ignored him and turned to me. "You!" She snarled, and she tackled me to the ground.

The campers stopped talking and they stood up in shock. "Get off me!" I shouted, punching her in the gut.

She grabbed my hair and started pulling at it. "Cheaters don't deserve to win," she said.

"I didn't cheat!" Chiron was starting to push her off me, though she carried on tugging on my hair.

"Liar!" She shouted, and I kicked her on the thigh, causing her to stumble.

I managed to get up, my used to be ponytail now a mess. Chiron helped Clarisse up, and she tried to charge at me again.

"You're the one who cheated in the first place!" I screamed. "With the other camper!"

Clarisse scoffed, trying to push past the campers holding her back. "You think you're smart, princess?" She managed to say.

"You think you can fight?" I retorted, I was trying to push past the campers holding me back, and this time, I was going to use my dagger.

"Clarisse and Annabeth!" Chiron yelled. "Sit down."

We both stared at each other, but then sat down reluctantly. Clarisse started whispering to her cabin, probably saying rumours about me. I didn't care though, I was used to them by now.

"You okay?" Leo whispered, sitting next to me.

"Yeah," I turned back to Clarisse, who was busy glaring daggers at me.

"She's just jealous, you know." Leo said, and I turned back to him suprised.

"What?"

"She's jealous of you Annabeth." He sighed. "Everyone can see that."

I made a face. "That's not jealousy, that's just bitter hatred."

Leo raised an eyebrow. "They're basically the same thing."

I stared bitterly at the egg, it's golden colour sending a warm glow. "It's so beautiful."

Leo looked at it. "Yeah," he sighed.

"How can something so pleasant, create something so disastrous?"

"Think about the Titans, they were a work of art, created by something supposed to be beautiful." Leo replied. "And look how they turned out to be." He laughed. "A mess."

I smiled. "A complete mess."

So how'd you guys like the chapter?

I was going to put in a lot more drama with Clarisse and Annabeth but then took it off because I felt like that was too much.

I feel sorry for Clarisse actually, she's jealous but she doesn't want to show it, and Annabeth doesn't believe Leo about it.

Sooooooooooo, how will Leo find out about Annabeth's 'memory loss'. Was actually going to put this in this chapter, but then deleted it because, again, thought of it as too much.

Well bye peeps!
