~ Still Waiting For You~

SONIC

He left.

Never had I ever imagined that this would hurt so much, so so much, a sharp pang of this heavy pain twisting my chest and restricting my vision with my tears. He left. He really did, without even looking back or thinking twice. Is this him? Is this the same person I've known for the past five years? Had he ever thought about me, about my feelings, before spitting his answers right upon my face and strutting away? Had he ever taken some time to notice my face, my expressions, my emotions, my features contorting in pain against my will? Oh! How I wish he could spend a fraction of seconds thinking a little more about my feelings, of how I felt, how I felt about this all. But it's all in vain now that he cares no more. Perhaps it wouldn't hurt that much if it was someone else, but this is different. 'Cause it was him.

I fell in love with my best friend.

I chose to ignore it but I couldn't. After that day, everything became dull and boring for me, the world suddenly stuck in black in white. The person who had painted my life with all his vibrant colors turned it all into shades of dull grey within a few seconds and didn't even care.

I lay on my bed, wrapping my fragile self with my blanket, a pillow held tight against my arms which was half drenched with all the tears I shed. And who am I crying for? Someone who'll never come to me? Someone who never cared about my feelings or dared to think twice before hitting me with his heartless reply? Someone who didn't want to love me 'cause he didn't want to be gay like me? I'm crying for him? Ha! Doesn't that sound silly?

But yes...this is. This is the truth. I'm crying for him. I'm crying for him day and night without eating a proper meal or getting a proper sleep. I'm crying for him instead of listening to my friends or to what my beating heart had to say. I'm crying for him because he chose to be with someone else, someone better, and not me. I'm crying for him...without giving a single thought about myself...without thinking about me.

I was still weeping, as I lay my head on Way's lap, while he stroked my hairs, running his slender fingers through the tangled strands, whispering sweet words of encouragement at the same time. Way was someone who had once gone through the same thing I'm going through, but soon realised that he was running after the wrong person and he finally found his right one. Way knew what I was going through, so he chose not to leave my sight for a second. I'm grateful for this, Way and my other mates taking so much care of me even when I'm giving him this much of trouble. But whatever means he or my mates tried in order to cheer me up, I couldn't get that night out of my head. I couldn't.

"Sonic, don't you understand a simple word, huh? I'm not gay!" North cried, as he walked down the path to his car, Sonic following him closely behind, his eyes filled with tears, "I'm okay with being friends with you, but try to understand Sonic, I already have-"

"B-But North I-" Sonic mumbled, looking at his best friend with a little flicker of hope in his teary eyes, "I-I loved y-you since the beginning. I loved you-"

"Do I look like I care?" North practically screamed, his loud voice reverberating in the deserted locality, sending shivers down Sonic's spine, "I literally told you I'm not interested in you. Don't you understand? I'm literally NOT INTERESTED IN YOU!"

"B-But N-North I-"

"I've got a girlfriend, Sonic," North spat, as Sonic gasped a little in surprise, tears still rolling down his face, "Yeah dude," North continued, smirking, "She's a real gorgeous tight bitch and I'm so glad to have her. Gosh! I literally shouldn't have been friends with you. Who knew you were such a weird creepy fag?"

Sonic was speechless. He couldn't believe this was North, the man standing in front of him, insulting him dirtily in every way possible just because he had told him that he was hopelessly in love with him. He couldn't believe that this was his best friend and his crush, who had spent the past five years with him, every single day by his side. As more tears fell from the boy's eyes, he was convinced that the North in front of him then, was not his North.

North didn't care. He opened the door of his car, sat inside and swiftly drove away, not even caring to look back at the crying lad he left in the middle of the empty road at night, all alone.

"Sonic," Way whispered gently, softly massaging his forehead, "Wanna eat something hun?"

"I-I'm n-not hungry," came the weak reply.

Way sighed and looked up at his boyfriend with sad eyes. Pete couldn't help but sigh too, looking at the poor boy lying on Way's lap, just like a fragile being. It had already been days, yet there was improvement in the lad's state, whatsoever the couple did.

"W-Way?" Sonic mumbled softly, as he raised his head from Way's lap and sat up on the couch. Way was glad seeing Sonic finally getting up by himself and actually trying to say something.

"Yes yes hun what is it?" Way asked, coming a little closer to the boy, taking his soft hands in his own, "Tell me Sonic, don't fear!"

"I'll-I'll take that offer."

"Which one Nic?"

"Th-That offer of going abroad for f-further studies," Sonic replied, his gaze fixed on the floor, "I-I w-want to go a-abroad...far away...from here. I want t-to forget everything...e-everything...even him and-"

Sonic couldn't complete his sentence when he broke down, crying. Way quickly wrapped him in his arms, trying to calm him down.

"It's okay...it's okay Sonic," whispered Way, stroking the boy's hair as he wept against his chest, "You must take this opportunity. Go abroad and built a new life hun. No one should stop you from what you want, should they? I'm so proud of you, Sonic. Then," he slowly made him lift his head, as he wiped the tears off his cheeks, "Let's start packing, should we?"

"Mn," Sonic replied, nodding his head slowly.

I'll definitely forget all about you.

NORTH

What have I done?

I sat inside my room, dark and cold, crouching against the door, with my knees pulled up to my chest, my arms around them. I thought...over and over again...of what I had done, of what I had ruined...a bond, a relation, a person. Tears welled up in my eyes as I could see Sonic's teary face flashing in the dark in front of my blurry vision, his hurting expressions, his big doe eyes glassy with tears, his quivering plush lips, his cheeks flushed in the cold, his soft little hands shaking under the huge sleeves of his sweater...each and every single detail of his expressions shattered my heart into a million pieces.

But what could I do?

Bounded by the chains they had wrapped tightly around me, I had no choice but to move in accordance to their orders. I was nothing more than a marionette, a wooden puppet tied with strings, who had no command over it's own movements and did only what it's master ordered. I was helpless. I could do nothing but reject him brutally, so brutally that he ends up hating me so much that he never cones back to me.

Because, even though I am madly in love with him and wanted nothing in my wretched life but him, I knew, if I accepted him, I'd have to loose him in the worst way ever.

"U-Uncle pl-please don't...d-don't hurt h-him."

A boy, perhaps thirteen, cried helplessly. He was tied to a chair, the ropes binding his small frame so tightly that even if he tried his best, he couldn't break free. In front him, a few steps away, sat another boy facing him, he too tied up with thick ropes. Both the lads were crying, trapped in a small, almost dark room surrounded by thousands of guards. Around them, a man walked, smirking at the condition of the boys, occasionally laughing like a devil.

"Aww...you wanna save your boyfie North?" the man asked, edging his lips closer to the crying boy's ears, making him shiver, "But it's too late now. Your boyfie is mine."

North cried harder. He knew what his Uncle was about to do and kept on begging him not to do it.

"Pl-Please d-don't hurt him...pl-please..." he begged, "H-Hurt me...h-hurt me instead...I-I am a-at fault...h-he didn't d-do anything...pl-please..."

"Ohh so you wanna get hurt so bad, hm?" the man whispered, as he motioned one of his guards to take some action. Seconds later, the entire basement shook with the loud, ear piercing screech of a boy in pain, as one of the guards had placed a hot iron rod on North's soft skin, burning it instantly, the smell of burning meat engulfing the room.

"I warned you, didn't I?" the man said, now walking up to the other boy. He slowly took out a revolver and held it against the child's temple, "You're not only a dirty little fag but you also became a whore for our enemy's son. Shameless!"

North cried harder. The pain on his ignited skin was nothing compared to the false accusations and cruel insults he was hearing. Even in that state, he kept on begging the man to let the other boy go and torture him instead.

"Let this be a reminder of how much I hate filthy fags," the man growled as he pushed the revolver more towards the boy's head. The boy knew his end was near. He just looked up at North, his eyes filled with tears and he...smiled.

"North don't cry," he whispered, "You'll be fine, North. Don't give up yet. I promise...someone's out there...waiting for you. They'll definitely love you more than me. I'm sorry I couldn't give you what you deserved, North. You deserve much better, love. I'm so sorry. Goodbye!"

"Sky...S-Sky...noo..d-don't say- SKYYYYYYYYYYY!"

The trigger was pulled and within seconds the lifeless body of his lover fell in front of his eyes. North went speechless. He couldn't cry, he couldn't talk, he couldn't blink, only stare blankly at the boy at his feet. The basement filled with the laughter of the man who had just killed an innocent soul and even during that time, North remained emotionless.

"Let this be a reminder of how much I hate filthy fags."

What else can I do Sonic? You see I've got no choice. He's still there, inspecting each and evey move I make. If he ever finds out about me being in love with you, you don't know love, what he'll do to you. It hurts, Sonic. It hurts to hurt you...but it's better than seeing you getting hurt even more. It hurts to see you walk away...yet it's better than seeing your lifeless body in front of my eyes.

I'm sorry, Sonic. But I'm happy. I'm happy that you're not with someone with a dangerous background. I'm happy...that you're leaving this, place...that you're leaving me. I'm so happy thinking this that you'll build a brand new life for yourself and definitely find someone better, who can love you without any worry behind their backs. You deserve much better love...much much better.

I'm sorry, Sonic.

Sometimes, letting go of them makes you weak...yet makes you proud of yourself...that you did succeed in sacrificing something you love just for their safety.

* * *

North was lying on his bed, without any interest in anything. The television was switched on in front of him, a random channel he had picked as a show was being broadcasted. North had no interest in it. He just blankly stared through the window, the beautiful moon shining brightly in the open firmament and the subtle noises of vehicles and the hustle bustle of the busy city floating from a distance.

Suddenly, something caught his attention.

The show which was being broadcasted was quickly stopped and a news was being shown. At first North was confused as to why a news was being shown in an entertainment channel. But soon he understood it was a news of high importance. North quickly sat up straight and began watching it.

Flight no. 317 crashed at a deserted village near HongKong. The plane crash was devastating. Most of the passengers, including the pilots and crew, were found to be dead and till now, no survivor has been rescued. The rescue team is on its way of aiding the scene and search is still going on....

North froze. He just stared at the glowing screen, the audio slowly going deaf to his ears. The entire world around him was going dark, whirling into a whirlpool of nothingness. North couldn't move an inch. He stayed where he was, still rethinking and rechecking himself whether whatever he was hearing was true or not.

Flight no. 317...the plane Sonic was in.

"N-No he's alive," North mumbled to himself, as a sharp pain hit his chest, tears piercing his eyes.

The rescue team hasn't found any survivor yet...

"He's alive...definitely..."

They have taken out almost all the passengers' dead bodies...

"N-Nothing w-will happen to h-him..."

The debris are too huge to be removed as of now...trapping the other occupants...

"H-He's fine...h-he's fine...."

The dead bodies have almost added up to the number of occupants of the plane...condolences to the family members....

"S-Sonic's alive....S-Sonic's...okay....he's alive...he's alive..."

Sonic is alive...he's fine.

* * *

The rescue team was on its work, giving their fullest to rescue whoever they found. Till then, they hadn't found a single survivor. Yet they went on with their work with high hopes of finding at least one living person.

What they never noticed was a part of a plane where they didn't venture yet. And alas! Beneath the debris there lay a survivor, who was still breathing.

Sonic couldn't move, as a huge chunk of material had crashed on his legs, smashing them the instant they fell. He was bleeding from his head, as he was thrown on the hard ground when the plane hit the ground. Sonic lay stoic, his breathing becoming slower and slower, life ebbing away from his body. Tears welled up in his eyes as he realised...he was going to die.

With one last painful effort, he brought his left hand closer to his face, and took a look at the small ring that glistened on his ring finger, the hoop of metal now stained with his blood. Sonic smiled a little, remembering how he had managed to smuggle the ring.

"That ring has a pair," North huffed, as he showed him the other one, a complete replica of the one he had stolen, "It's a couple ring."

"I don't care," Sonic pouted, putting it on his ring finger and lifting his hand towards the window, tye sunlight glistening on the ring, "I like it and now it's mine. You wear that one! Pleaseeeeeeeee."

"You're impossible, Sonic," mumbled North, rolling his eyeballs, as he put on the other ring and immediately got engulfed in a big hug.

"We're a coupleeee," Sonic cried, as he looked at North with his beautiful eyes.

"Y-Yeah...best friends couple," North replied, not looking very interested, "Now why don't you stop this joke and finish your assignment? You've got only two days to complete it, Sonic!"

"Yeah yeah oldieee! Doing!"

"Wait...who did you call oldie?" North raised an eyebrow, only to hear tiny adorable giggles from the other boy.

"You naughty little prick...wait! You wait...!"

Sonic's tears fell on the ground as he looked at the ring, his breathing almost stopping, his heart reluctant to beat anymore.

"N-North," he whispered, looking at the ring, "I-I love y-you all m-my life...y-yet got hurt b-by you the m-most...I-I wanted t-to forget y-you...b-but here I a-am...breathing my last....g-good luck N-North...lets m-meet again in o-our next l-life...a-and I hope y-you'll try t-to l-love me th-then...t-till th-then...take care love....b-bye..."

With that the last passenger of the cursed plane closed his eyes, slowly ebbing away in a forever darkness. When the rescuers found this fragile boy, the thing that surprised them was the small smile that was still etched upon his lips even after all the brutal injuries he had on his body.

* * *

It was a beautiful evening.

The city lights were already twinkling, as the Sun was sloping down the western sky, brightening up the horizon with its crimson hue. The shops opened, and every single store dazzled with lights. The cars wooshed past the road and people walked down the pavements, taking evening strolls. It was the time when office goers were leaving for home, and hence, the streets were mighty crowded.

A man, in his late fifties, sat at his window, looking at the busy road below his house. The evening sunrays fell on his face, as he put on his glasses and took out his, diary to write something.

Time flew and months changed to years but North didn't change. His belief of Sonic returning to him never faded a jot and till today, even in his late fifties, he believed that Sonic was still alive. At one point his friends thought he was mad and they had sent him to see a psychiatrist. But nothing could change the belief that was stuck in his brain. Time passed and all his friends got married and had their own families, but North remained the same. He never fell in love or married, he just lived all his life waiting for him to come back to him.

North stopped writing. He put down his pen and closed his diary. He eased himself on his chair and looked at the sunset, remembering how in his youth he used to enjoy such sunsets with his special one. North lifted his hand, a ring glowing on his ring finger. He smiled.

"I know we'll meet again, Sonic. I'm still waiting for you to come."

North slowly brought his hand to his chest, the ring on his heart, as he closed his eyes, the evening glow still shining upon him.

The next morning when the housemaid came, she found him seated at the chair where he sat last evening, dead. It was later revealed that he was suffering from a heart disease and had a sudden heart attack which took his life. He was buried and a funeral was held for him, just according to his will. Everyone was sad at this loss, but at the same time they were happy, as finally, he was going to meet his love.

With this ended the story of two souls, who never knew how much one loved the other and their dark secrets and little misunderstandings had led them to suffer a lifetime sorrow.

A flaw that changed to a hideous scar

The echoes of pain from near and far

I surrendered myself to this fruitless war

That changed me to be what they wanted.

Not only did I loose myself in this maze

But you too, your sombre melody, sweet smiles and gaze,

My sleepless nights and my darkest days

Could I go back to change my fate?

Our story was like a sad symphony

Rumbling and echoing in the hearts of many

A tale, I repent, as I flip the pages and see

An dull epilogue, we all despise and hate.

So here I am, putting my pen down to rest

As I place you, my angel, within my chest,

As the Sun journeys towards the glorious West,

Wait for me at the Heavens' gate.
