HE'S GONE : PETExWAY
Pete x Way
Angst
~ He's gone ~
Dying a death when your time is up isn't as painful as dying multiple deaths during your lifetime. Have you ever wondered how it feels, to sacrifice everything, even your mere existence, for a simple word, woven by the four chosen letters among the alphabets...the word 'love'? And then get all your feelings mercilessly killed by that same person you 'loved' even though it's not entirely their fault? Have you ever dreamt of being a shining star all your life, yet give it up for someone you care, so that they can shine brighter than you, while you remain overshadowed by the light you yourself sacrificed for them. It hurts. Yes...It hurts. But...what can you do? What can I do? What can we do? Just sit and sigh...and watch events unfold...There are plenty of ways to die, but only love can kill you and at the same time, keep your incinerated soul alive...to feel it and make you a permanent slave of it...
"He lied to us...all of us!"
The day was gloomy, the garage was quiet, an uncomfortable monotony enveloping the area, a silence too heavy to be broken. Like other days, the place wasn't noisy at all. No sound of cars vrooming were audible, neither were tools clanking or mechanics talking. None of the mechanics were there, so silence was almost inevitable.
In one corner of the garage sat a group of people, talking among themselves. The seriousness in their faces and the gloom in their voices could easily convince anyone that a discussion about something very important was going on.
"I can't believe this," Alan spoke, running his hand through his hair in frustration, "How could he do this? How could he do this to us?"
"I believed him," Babe spoke, anger and grief mingled in his voice, "For ten years...for ten fucking years...he lied to us...all of us. Goshh! He's such a cheat."
The boys sighed, still not willing to accept the truth as the entire events unfolded simultaneously in front of them. They had never imagined that such a horrible betrayer had been with them, right in front of their eyes the entire time. And how they? They befriended him, they trusted him, they lived him.
"Where the fuck is he now?" Alan questioned, his voice growing deeper with anger.
"I-I don't know," Pete replied, his gaze fixated at his shoes, still not believing in the situation, even though he himself was the first one to discover it, "He left the day before yesterday, and I haven't seen him since then."
"Huh...and how will you? He's definitely at Tony's house, being his pet," Babe growled.
Once again, everyone went silent. No one could believe whatever was going on. A trusted friend, a beloved mate had betrayed all of them, played along with their feelings and had made all their actions transparent to their worst enemies. What could be a worser betrayal than this?
"Guys," Alan spoke, suddenly getting up from the couch, looking at all the other boys, "I know you all will be against this sudden turn of plans but i can't help it. I'm going to that damn house right now and there's no argument about this-"
"B-But how-"
"Jeff is still in there and you must know it," Alan growled in wrath, shutting up Sonic as soon as he had opened his mouth, "I don't give a fuck to whatever happens to anyone else, or to what Way will do. I'm going to rescue Jeff and that's final. If you guys don't wanna go according to this plan, then don't!"
"But Alan, wait, calm down," Babe spoke, quickly getting up and holding his shaking hands, "It's not that safe, you know? Especially now that the fucker is there...he definitely knows how we'll attack 'cause he was there with ys during the plan and-"
"Babe," Alan spoke, calming down a bit at the racer's subtle touch, "Let's go according to what we had planned. Way won't be able to do much. We'll separate out, okay? You will go with Charlie to deal with Tony, North and Sonic will manage the guards, Pete will be with them, while I go to the auction to rescue Jeff-"
"But Alan you can't alone-"
"I'll be fine Babe...trust me," He quickly embraced him in a brotherly hug, his eyes brimming with tears. Even though he had assured the younger about his safety, within the depths of his heart, he wasn't sure whether he would be able to get out of that cursed mansion alive or not.
"I'm going with you," Babe replied, breaking the hug and looking at him with determination and a hint of anger, his fists clenched in fury, "I'll deal with Tony first, and then Way. In the end, I'll kill them both with my own hands."
Everyone looked at Babe in disbelief, as soon as the words left his mouth. He wanted to end his best friend's life with his own hands and he had literally declared that in front of everyone. No one could believe that. After all, they were the best of friends, weren't they?
Everyone's gaze quickly averted to Pete, along with Alan's. Alan thought that Pete might have felt bad, so he decided to intervene.
"I hope you don't mind, Pete, after whatever he-"
"I don't," replied Pete in a monotonous voice, astonishing everyone even more, "You can do whatever you want with him, Babe. I won't stop you. He deserves it after all."
"O-Okay, then....S-So....are you all coming?" Alan asked.
"Yes!" They replied in unison, getting up from the couches.
"Wait, Alan," Pete called, stopping the boys on their tracks, "I'll go first. I have fake identity cards and they'll easily let me entry into the auction. As soon as I get in, I'll inform you about everything. My men will be there too, they'll make it easier for you all to enter. Once you all are in, make your move. Okay?"
"Okay, I agree to that," replied Alan, "You go ahead Pete. We'll follow soon. So, everyone, remember the plan!" Alan ordered.
Pete quickly left the garage and walked towards his car. But alas! Before he could open the gate of his car, a heavy metallic object hit his head, instantly knocking him unconscious.
* * *
"Pete?"
Pete had finally opened his eyes. He quickly got up and looked around, only to meet darkness embracing him. Pete frantically looked around here and there in search of the voice, yet couldn't locate it.
"Pete?"
Why is it so familiar? Pete quickly got up and started checking the dark area, in search of the owner of the voice. His own name rang in his ears multiple times, the same voice calling him over and over again, yet he couldn't locate the area. Pete felt like he was going mad. He felt like he was hallucinating, hearing false things. He leapt about in the darkness, stumbling, staggering, falling, still getting up and running towards the voice, that was pulling him like a magnet. Yet, he felt like he was so far away from the voice.
"Help me Pete..."
The voice pleaded, over and over again. Oh! So familiar it was that Pete could recognize it blindfolded. Pete ran aimlessly in the dark, still searching as the voice kept on repeating,
"Help me Pete..."
Finally, the boy gave up. Pete collapsed on the cold hard ground, his body aching in exhaustion. His chest heaved up and down, as he gasped for more air while clutching his shirt at his chest. His face and hair were damp with perspiration. He then finally looked up at the darkness, and to it he spoke,
"Who-Who are y-you? Wh-What do y-you need?"
It was silent for a while, and then, soft as breath, but broken and chocked, a voice came floating to him...a familiar voice.
"I'm not a betrayer. I tried to protect you all. They misunderstood me, Pete. They misunderstood me...I never betrayed you all, Pete...I never betrayed....I never...."
The voice broke and the owner started to cry. Pete was horrified. He still couldn't believe it. He still couldn't believe that it was him, that it was his voice....that it was Way's voice.
The voice spoke again.
"Take me away from here, Pete...please...they'll kill me...they'll kill me Pete...please take me away from here...please..."
"Way..."
"Pete! Pete! Wake up! Pete!"
Pete jolted up from the floor, breathing heavily. His breaths were erratic and shallow. He quickly looked around himself, and to his shock, he noticed that it was Babe who was on front of him, looking at him in utter surprise. Pete couldn't believe it. He looked around to surprisingly find himself in that same room he was in in the course of his dreams. But...Way?
"P-Pete...we've to get out of here," whispered Babe, tugging at Pete's shirt to ask him to get up, "We don't have much time-"
"Wh-Where am I?" Pete asked, still panting.
"You're in Tony's house," Babe informed, quickly turning to look at the door, where Charlie was standing to inform them in case anyone came in sight, "You were attacked and brought here. Luckily we found you before they could do something bad to you. Now...lets go Pete. C'mon."
Babe helped him to get up, Pete's limbs still aching from the attack. Slowly, he brought him out of the room.
"Keep this gun with you," Charlie saide, as he shoved a gun inside Pete's trouser pocket.
"B-But how..." Pete extended his cuffed hands.
Before they could speak further, a loud bang was heard, followed by a gunshot. Pete, Babe and Charlie ran, not knowing where to go. Men started following them as soon as they caught sight of them, aiming their targets. Babe continuously fought with them, shooting and fighting, while Charlie escorted Pete to as much as he could since the man's hands were cuffed. They ran for their lives, but soon were surrounded by too many people.
"Charlie...take Pete and run," Babe cried, aiming his gun at the men.
"B-But Babe..."
Babe quickly ran and kissed Charlie on his mouth. "I'll come back love," he spoke, trying his best to keep his voice stable, "I-I'll be alright. Don't worry, okay? Just-Just go now...go!"
With one last look at his lover, Charlie grabbed Pete by his bounded wrists and ran evading all the gunshots they could. Luckily, the two of them found an empty room and quickly ran inside it and shut the door. They collapsed on the ground, panting heavily.
Pete looked emotionless, the events in his dreams still running restlessly in his mind. Charlie glanced at him, and looking at his stoic expression, he put a hand on his shoulder.
"I'm sorry, P'Pete," He said softly, "I'm sorry that P'Way-"
"Don't-Don't take his name," Pete growled, and Charlie quickly removed his hand from his shoulder.
They remained in silence in that room, hearing all the chaos going outside. Charlie was scared, not knowing whether Babe was safe or not. He desperately wanted to go out and fight alongside him, but just because of Pete, he couldn't. He was just thinking about Bane, when Pete suddenly spoke.
"Babe loves you a lot, doesn't he?"
Charlie was silent for a while, nor knowing how to answer the question. He knew well where this all was coming from.
"Y-Yes..." He hesitantly responded.
"That's so nice," Pete replied, looking at his cuffed hands, which were already red and swollen.
"P'Pete I-"
"I want to meet Way," Pete said, "I want to meet him...for the last time. I want to see him once again-"
"P'Pete..."
"I don't care whether he loved me or not, Charlie, neither do I care what he did to us. All I know is that I loved him and now he has betrayed my love-"
And then, the door opened violently.
There in front of them stood Tony himself. Neither Pete nor Charlie could move an inch. No words were spoken, no warnings were given. Tony, in a flash, took out his revolver and aimed at them, his crooked smile sending shivers down their smiles as they helplessly stared at him.
But then...
It happened so quickly...
A figure suddenly leaped in front of them, and within seconds, loud consecutive gunshots were heard. Before they could realise anything, the frail figure fell to the ground. Pete, in the darkness, edged forward to see who it was. And there, he froze.
"N-No...WAY!!"
Pete lunged in front of him, picking up Way's bloodied body in his arms, shaking him, tears invading his vision. He didn't care if Tony killed him then and there. Visions from his dreams came flashing back to his memory, as more years oozed out of his eyes, as he kept screaming and calling Way's name.
Soon, Tony fell too, and behind him was Babe, who had shot Tony before he could harm anyone else. Babe, in his victorious glory, walked into the room towards Charlie when he noticed Pete and the body he was holding.
"Pete who is tha- Way?"
Pete was a crying mess, too shocked to speak anything.
"Pete c'mon it's Way...wasn't he supposed to die-"
"SHUT UP!" Pete screamed at Babe, shutting him up instantly. Even after all the lies he told, the dirty game he played, the betrayals he did, Pete couldn't believe he was still holding his injured body in his hands. It was his lover after all.
"P-Pete..." Way whispered, his breath as soft as the gentle breeze on the meadows, "I-I am s-sorry P-Pete..." I-I...I-I'm not a be-betrayer. I tri-tried to pr-protect you all. T-They mi-misunderstood me, P-Pete. T-They m-misunderstood me...I-I never be-betrayed you all, Pete...I-I never b-betrayed....I-I never...."
The exact same words from the voice in his dreams.
The chaos had stopped and it was silence everywhere, except tte quiet sobbing of the man in whose arms lay a dying lad. Despite the galore of blood that was pooling out of his chest without any restrictions, with one last effort, he slowly raised his hand and place it on Pete's cheek.
"P-Pete," Way smiled at him, even through his tears and the unbearable pain, as he knew this would be his last time seeing his beloved, "I-I love you Pete. S-So m-much...l-let's m-meet ag-again in o-our next life...t-till then...b-bye..."
And he closed his eyes, once and forever.
Pete burst out in tears, screaming and crying. He grabbed Way by his bloodied shirt, shaking him vigorously, trying to wake him up. His world was falling apart, everything around him crumbling into pieces as he realized Way wasn't breathing anymore. Pete screamed over and over, calling his name, but there was no response. He felt numb, his surroundings becoming darker and darker. Way was gone, forever. His numb, lifeless body lay in his lover's arms, as all signs of life were turned off from him.
Babe and Charlie were still frozen at their spot. Even though a sharp pang of pain had hit Babe's chest on seeing his former best friend die in front of him, he still couldn't understand why Pete was acting that way. Wasn't it Pete who didn't even hesitate to tell him a word when he had declared that he would kill Way with his own hands? Then why...
Two people had come into the room and they were none other than Alan and Jeff. At first they couldn't understand what was going on. But as soon as they saw Pete, with Way's dead body on his lap, they froze. Soon, Jeff started to cry.
"Jeff," Alan comforted him, "Why are you-"
"H-He's not a betrayer."
"He- wait! WHAT?"
Everyone looked at Jeff, even Pete. As more years welled up in the poor boy's eyes, he finally revealed the truth.
"P'Way was a sp-spy at Tony's house. H-He wasn't set by an-anyone, b-but he used to go r-regularly to the house to c-check on e-everything they did so that he could warn you all before they did something bad to you all. F-For a while, he had somehow gained Tony's trust, and so he had ordered him to spy on us. B-But never had he revealed any information to him about us. He-He was tortured a lot for this," Jeff looked at Way's pale face, full of scars and bruises and cried harder, "But still he kept quiet. He even protected me from Tony and prolonged the auction. O-Otherwise I-I would have been s-sold by now. H-He was wr-wronged b-by us...h-he even..."
Everyone was silent. How could they...how could they do this to him? Babe collapsed on the ground, Charlie quickly grabbing him by his shoulders. Pete cried harder, clenching his lover's dead body in his arms as the incident revolved in his head, the day he misunderstood him and told him to gat out of his life.
"Pete I can explain-"
"I don't need any explanation from you," Pete cried, pushing Way as hard as he could. Way stumbled and fell to the floor, his head hitting the corner of a small table, instantly bruising and bleeding his scar. But Pete didn't care. He was beside himself with anger.
"Get out of my life, Way...and also get lost from here, Way..."
"P-Pete-"
"Not another word, Way...just get out. You lied to me. You betrayed me. You betrayed us, all of us. Your just a horrible liar...a terrible piece of shit. You're our enemy, our greatest fucking enemy. God! How the fuck did I even trust you? I loved you...FUCK! I'll die rather than loving my enemy. GET OUT!"
"I- I'm sorry...."
Pete cried harder, as his hands travelled to the revolver lying beside him. He had nothing left. Due to his own actions, his arrogance, his lack of judgement, his doubt and his misunderstanding on his own lover, he had lost everything. He had killed him, he had killed Way. And now, he'll pay for it.
"I'm sorry Way," he whispered, bringing his lips closer to Way's dry and cold ones, "I-I'm sorry...L-Let's meet again? I-I know I don't deserve you...but I can't live on ca-carrying this guilt on my shoulders. I-I'm coming with y-you, Way...I-I'm coming..."
"PETE NOOOO!"
But it was too late. The trigger went off, and soon another body fell. The boys cried harder, as Alan lunged forward towards Pete, but it was all over. Pete was dead too.
Slowly, Jeff edged closer. He went towards Way and sat down beside his body. He slowly put his hand inside his pocket and brought out something. A small red leather box and a small piece of note. Jeff sobbed harder on seeing them.
"P'Way a-always kept this with himself," he said, while sobbing, "H-He w-wanted t-to marry P-Pete..."
Slowly, he opened the box and revealed its content. A beautiful diamond ring, must have cost a large amount of money. Jeff closed it back and put it in Way's hand.
"W-We'll b-bury them beside e-each other...w-with this, in between," he said, "W-With this in between...s-so that in th-their next life...th-they m-marry each other..."
Jeff broke down crying, as Alan quickly engulfed him in his arms, him crying as well. Babe was a crying mess. He couldn't believe his actions towards Way, how much he had hurt him towards the end of his life. He finally realised how much his best friend loved him, how much he loved everyone in their team. Never will he get to see his big smile, never will he see his car beside his own on the race track. Never can he go to his favourite canteen with him, never will he ever see him practice with him again. Never will Way come back to him, in his happy times or in his sad hours, and neither will he ever become the favourite uncle to Babe's children as he had promised. 'Cause he was gone....forever.
Soon the police guarded the area and rescued all of them. Finally the evil had fallen and there was nothing more to worry about. The injured were taken care of, the sick were sent to the hospitals and the dead to their graves. Everything was normal once again.
What was forgotten amidst the mess was a small piece of paper that still lay in that room where two lovers had given their lives for each other and had died in hopes to meet once again. The paper had a short phrase in it, scribbled away by some poor hopelessly romantic lad who was so deep in love with his man.
Will you marry me?
