PART - V
"Yes...I gave birth to Lily."
Silence.
The silence was heavy, yet a little uncomfortable. Pete couldn't believe his ears, as he heard those words spill out of the other man's lips. How is this possible? Isn't he a man? Way, on the other hand, was fidgeting nervously with the hem of his shirt, his heart beating fast and him still contemplating as to whether revealing the biggest secret of his life to someone he barely knew was a good idea or not.
"H-How is it-"
"Possible?" Way completed the sentence. He sat down on the chair and didn't speak for a while, more like, he didn't know what to say. He was just staring at the floor, suddenly feeling void from the interior, as all the snippets of his past flashed in front of him like the roll of a film, playing in front of his vision like a cinema. It wasn't a pleasant one, rather a painful one, only with the prior exception of a sweet little girl in it.
"I was twenty when I fell in love for the first time," Way began, his gaze still fixed to the floor, "This man was my dad's business partner's son and we met in a gathering during some event. I don't know what, but something in him attracted me so much and I confessed. He did accept it. We dated for almost two years and that period...I would have described it to be a golden one...only if he didn't choose someone else instead of heeding my existence, that too, behind my back."
Pete sat down in front of Way on another chair. At first, he couldn't believe that Way was actually narrating his past to him. They barely knew each other! But he didn't pay much heed to that and instead, focused on what the other one had to say.
"We fought. It was a violent one. After that, he decided to leave me," Way smiled, but it was a broken one, a smile of mockery, jeering at himself, "And he left. I was devastated. But thanks to my parents and my beloved best friend that I was almost out of the depression pit. But my happiness didn't last long. Three months later, I fell sick. Weird symptoms kept on bugging my body and fearing that something serious had happened to me, I went to the doctor. And that was when I found...I was two weeks pregnant with my ex's child."
Pete looked up at Way, their eyes meeting, Way's sorrowful gaze clashing with Pete's questioning ones. Before Pete could open his mouth to ask something, Way gently smiled.
"I know what you're wondering," he replied, "How I got pregnant even though I'm a man. Honestly, I don't know it myself. Some call it being intersex? But I think in my case, its not. The doctor told that this is rarest of the cases, involving hardly 0.2% or less. I don't know why Heavens decided to throw me, out of all people, in this category. Honestly, I'm lucky that the doctor is my best friend's husband hence my condition isn't rumored. Else I would have been in the scientist's laboratories right now haha."
Pete stayed quiet. He still couldn't believe that the boy in front of him had birthed a child. Pete didn't feel weird or disgusted. He just couldn't believe how precious and unique the boy is, like a pearl lying buried in the depths of a roaring ocean.
"My parents helped to keep my secret well hidden," he continued, "My nine months journey wasn't a difficult one and soon I gave birth to my angel Lily. It was all sweet once again. But," he sighed, "I think...I wasn't made for happiness. Lily wasn't even three months old when...my parents died in a tremendous car accident."
Tears stung the boy's eyes, in memory of his beloved parents. His voice shook and was slightly chocked with tears. Yet he continued. These hidden emotions, trapped within him for years, he wanted to vent them out. And he wouldn't stop.
"I was destroyed. I almost wanted to die. But...I had to live for my baby, my sweet flower. My best friend helped me to find a house for myself and also a job. But I didn't want to trouble him and so I assured him that I'll be able to do stuff myself. He still helps me whenever in need but I don't like to bother him. After that, it has been only me and my baby. Lily, my flower, is the reason I'm alive, or why I want to be alive. If not for her I would have been dead long back."
Way took a deep breath, wiping away some of his tears, and he continued.
"Everything was somehow going alright, but, a month ago, my ex had somehow spotted Lily in a park with me...a-and since th-then...he h-has been after me...a-asking me about h-her identity," Way's voice was cracking now, "I-I don't want to g-give Lily t-to him...n-never! H-He doesn't d-deserve her. Y-Yet if I don't tell him...he'll k-keep on pestering me...bl-black mailing me...t-torturing me. I-If he knows about m-my c-condition, a second wouldn't pass and everyone will come to know. I-I don't want that. I-I d-don't want to be an ex-experiment...I-I just want to live peacefully with my baby...I-I d-don't want to b-be an exper-"
Before Way could complete his sentence, Pete got up from his place and rushed to him, pulling him into a hug. Way was a little shocked at first, yet finally surrendered himself to the warmth of those arms. For a moment, they remained like that, Way resting his head on Pete's chest, sobbing, and Pete with his strong arms wrapped around him. He then pulled away from the embrace, and, gently kneeling on the ground, he took Way's delicate hands in his own and looked up at his tear stained, caramel eyes.
"Way," he spoke, his voice soft, "I-I don't know how much I'll be capable of but, trust me. As long as I'm here, nothing, not a single thing will happen to you and Lily. I promise! No one will hurt you. No one will dare to lay a finger on you Way. I'll protect you both. And I mean it, Way. I will."
Way couldn't believe his ears. He again wanted to argue back that he didn't want Pete to trouble himself with their mess, but he was tired. And suddenly, those weet words of assurance made him feel better. Whispering a soft 'thank you' he slowly rubbed his tears away and looked back at Pete, who was still kneeling on the floor on his knees, gazing lovingly at him. Way suddenly felt nervous.
Wh-What's wrong with me? Why is his gaze making me feel so nervous?
"So," Pete continued, "Uh...it's already past ten and I don't think the trains are still at the station. Um...so...if-"
"Please stay back," Way replied, suddenly looking a little eager, "Anyways, I wouldn't have let you go out in the dark at this hour, Pete. And...oh no! There's nothing ready for dinner and I've got to put Lily to sleep!" Way quickly stood up, looking really hasty.
"Calm down, Mama Way," joked the other man, getting up from the floor, "Uh, why don't I look after the dinner while you go tuck in Lily in her bed? I swear you can trust my cooking skills you know. I promise I won't-"
"I trust you," Way replied, looking directly into Pete's eyes, "Please feel free to use my kitchen."
"I already did, you know," replied Pete, as they both laughed at it before Way went upstairs to put his daughter to sleep.
"Guess I've finally found it out," Pete muttered to himself, slightly smiling, as he walked into the kitchen, "C'mon. There's no argument about it. It's definitely him! Lily's face says it all!"
* * *
Hours transformed into days and days into months. Life for Way started becoming easier. Now that he had Pete beside him, his worries lessened. His ex husband never dared to come back to pester him, not after Pete almost murdering him one evening as he had tried to harm Lily, who was playing in the park. Pete had sworn to himself that anyone laying a finger on the two would definitely meet their ends in his hands and had kept his word. Sometimes, Way felt a little agitated, seeing his daughter's teacher helping them so much almost like a family member. But whenever he tried to bring up the topic, Pete pretended to go deaf and never paid any heed to his words.
Slowly, with passage of time, their relationship changed. Way and Pete became closer and Pete wouldn't deny, he had fallen for the beautiful boy long back. As for Way, who could hardly maintain a proper eye contact with Pete while talking without ending up being a perfect tomato, he could definitely feel the changes and turns within his own heart and had already surrendered to his feelings.
And then came a day, almost one year later, when Pete finally plucked up the courage to ask Way out. Way went speechless at the confession but definitely said a yes. And that was when they started dating.
Happiest of all was Lily, who now not only had one parent, but two. And she had already started calling Pete 'Papa'.
"Mama...Papa...Lily...FAMILYYY!" cried the little one, drawing a huge heart around three stick figures on a sheet of paper. She put down her crayons and ran to her Papa, who immediately picked her up and took her into the kitchen, where her Mama was cooking.
"Does she call you Papa in school too?" Way asked Pete, smiling.
"Hm. Can't help it," Pete replied, " 'Papa' has become my permanent title now and this little munchkin here won't stop calling me that. But I don't mind. After all, I am her Papa," he quickly filled her little face with thousands of kisses, the little one giggling to her hearts content.
Way watched the interaction, his bosom swelling with joy. The taste of pure happiness, unknown to him for such a long period. The feeling of being a part of a loving family, the feeling of loving and being loved. Finally he got them all. He silently thanked the Heavens for finally granting him some joy in his life and wished it to be permanent.

[5 years later]
"Lily again?"
"No...not this time," Pete laughed as he entered the room and closed the door behind him, "She has been less troublesome in school lately. Dunno how long it will last. She had some homework issues, nothing much."
Pete put down his sweater and switched off the lights, only a single bedside lamp providing minimum illumination. He then walked up to the bed and slipped under the blankets and immediately wrapped his arm around his husband.
"I missed you," he whispered, right against his partner's ears.
"Ugh Pete, you're seeing me since the evening," Way scoffed, lightly slapping his arm.
"Y-Yeah but I didn't see you for the rest of the day," he mumbled, his hand travelling below Way's stomach, "I missed baby too."
"Peteeee stop being so dramatic now, okie?" Way said, "You're seeing me right now, happy? Now go to sleep before I-"
"No let's talk," came an immediate protest, "We hardly get a husband-wife quality time now."
"Peteeee I'm sleepyyyyy," Way whined, making a small pout, "And baby wants rest too."
"No you aren't and it's visible. Now let's play a game, shall we?"
"Which one?" Way asked, "Don't tell me it's your-"
"No! No! Not that one," Pete assured him, "Alright. Forget it. Let's talk."
For a while, the couple talked about various stuff, some important, some pretty useless, some memories and certain incidents revolving their lives. They chatted like merry teens, carefree and bliss, laughing at their hearts content.
"Ohhh and that was when Lily decided to throw your glasses away," Way laughed, remembering his four year old daughter's antics towards her soon to be father.
"I can't believe she grew up so fast," Pete sighed, "It was as if yesterday I saw her trotting into the school through the gates, her little feet not being able to keep the balance, with this huge back on her back...twice her own size hahaha."
"Yes," agreed Way, scooting closer to his husband's chest, "But perhaps things wouldn't be this easy if it wasn't for you, Pete. You...You were like a ray of hope in our lives, soon fulfilling it with all your brightness of love and happiness. I'll forever be so grateful to you. I-I don't even know how to repay your kindness-"
"Yes yes...says the one who is wearing my ring on his finger and carrying our baby," joked Pete, as he pulled his beloved closer to him, cuddling under the blankets, "You agreeing to marry a shit faced messed up old owl like me was more than enough, honestly!"
"B-But it wasn't enough-"
"Way you know it was-"
"B-But-"
"Hold up," Pete suddenly sounded serious, "You can actually repay me with something, you know."
"What?" Way looked up innocently, his big doe eyes looking at him in confusion.
"Just do this baby," Pete brought his lips closer to Way's ears and whispered, in his deep, husky voice, "Spread those beautiful sexy legs of yours for me and make me more babies-"
"P-Pervert!" Way cried, hitting the laughing man on his chest, quickly turning away his face in embarrassment, "Ugh! Dirty! Can't believe I married this-this jerk!"
They resumed their chat and talked for a while about various things, almost anything that came to their minds. Way was a little scared about his pregnancy, even though he had gone through one before. But now that Pete was there by his side, he was less tensed.
"Hey, did you ever have a childhood crush?" Way suddenly asked, leaving Pete silent for a few moment.
"Uhh...promise me you wouldn't be angry?"
"Ugh! Why will I be angry, dummy?" Way replied back, "Everyone has a childhood crush. Even I had. Now first tell me about yours and then I'll tell about mine."
"Soo...umm...yeah...I had a crush. I was a kid back then," Pete began, "And I saw him only-"
"So you knew you were gay since you were a kid?" Way interrupted, making the other go speechless, "Hahahahaha! Continue! Continue!"
"Whatever," Pete scoffed, "Yeah I didn't know his name. I saw him like almost thrice and then never again. As if one day, he suddenly vanished. Dunno where he went. All that was left with me was a photograph I stealthily took of him with my camera."
"You took a picture of him without his permission?"
"C'mon Way, I was a baby back then," Pete replied, "I had given him a teddy bear you know. A baby pink small teddy...which was my favorite one. He was crying in one corner of a park as he had no friends so I gave him my teddy bear. He looked so happy. Dunno if he still has-"
"P-Pete-" Way suddenly faltered looking up at him with slight horror in his eyes.
"Yeah? What happened Way?" Pete asked, suddenly confused at his husband's look.
"Wait a minute," Way quickly scrambled down the bed and went to the nearest drawer. He sat on the floor and pulled the last drawer. Within it was a wooden box which he took out and placed on the floor. He quickly opened it and started rummaging it's contents. Pete couldn't see what he was doing due to lack of proper illumination. Suddenly, Way stood up and walked closer to him, with something in his hand.
"A-Are you talking about," he brought the thing closer to Pete, "T-This teddy?"
Pete came a little closer to the light and no sooner had he seen the stuff, he froze.
What the-
"B-But h-how-"
"A boy gave it to me 'cause I was crying in a park," Way explained, "He gave this to me and called me pretty. A-And after that...I had to move to another city with my parents and hence never saw him again. So I decided to keep this little gift as a memory of his...'cause he was...my first crush."
"That means-"
Pete threw the blankets to one side of the bed and jumped down, quickly running to another corner of the room. Searching through the piles in his desk, he extracted a small box. Pete quickly opened it and took out a small picture and came back to Way.
"So this is-"
"That's me!" exclaimed the other one, snatching the picture away from Pete's hand and bringing it closer to the lamp, "Oh! Oh my god! That's my mother's scarf. And-And that sweater...my grandma knit it for me, only for me. Oh my god! Oh my! I never had a single picture of my childhood days. This is so precious! Thank you Pete." He looked up at Pete, the latter looking at him with slightly teary eyes, yet a big smile upon his visage.
"Way," Pete spoke softly, wrapping his arms around him, "So...do you realize something? We married each other's first love, which is us! And we didn't even know. Isn't...Isn't this a coincidence?"
"I think so," giggled Way.
"Your eyes," Peye spoke with so much adoration, almost lost in those beautiful eyes, "They never changed. They're the same as in this childhood picture of yours. Big, bright, caramel eyes. Believe me, when I saw Lily for the first time, I instantly remembered this-this picture. And I really wanted to find more."
"Wait! Wait! That's why you agreed so fast on tutoring her?" Way suddenly spoke up, "To know more about me? Right? "
"Uh...no no no! I-I...um...uh..."
"Haha it's fine. B-But honestly...I'm so glad to meet you again...and get married to that handsome gentleman who gave me such a cute bear and," he hit Pete's chest, "Dared to click my picture with my permission!"
"Ohoooo sorry baby!"
"Huff you really are- Ahh!"
"Ohh no no what happened?" Pete suddenly started panicking, as he saw Way yelp while clutching his bump, "What happened, Way? Does it hurt? Is it okay? Oh no! No! Goshhh Way say-"
"The baby...kicked."
"What?"
"The baby kicked," Way replied slowly, as he sat on the bed and beckoned Pete to him, "Come here."
Pete sat beside him. Way took his hand in his own and placed it on his bump. Suddenly, Pete cried.
"I-I felt it...b-baby kicked!" he exclaimed in pure joy, "B-Baby really kicked...it kicked!"
Pete engulfed Way into a huge hug, both almost
on the brink of tears. Their happiness knew no bounds and no amount of words could describe it.
"It's really late now, darling," Pete said, "Let's go sleep, okay?"
"Yes! Yes!"
And that's how our sweet protagonist got his happy ending with a lovely husband and a beautiful happy family. Maybe if naughty little Pete hadn't secretly clicked a picture of his beloved that day, he would've never recognized him.
After all, he always knew deep within him, that Way was indeed his first love.
