~ Everything Is About To Change~

PART - II

"Andddd...what's the next step, hm?"

"Add...Add two to four and-and..." came the sweet yet excited reply.

"And then...take three away from it and-"

"Plus sixxxx yeahhhhh~~"

A little high five was all the child needed to encourage her in doing more sums. Pete couldn't help but beam with happiness at the big bright smile on the girl's face. Never had he seen a child so closely in his life and in case of this little lady, it was different. The moment Pete saw her, he felt a weird yet pleasant connection to her, a sweet sense of attachment and Pete wouldn't mind giving her more attention than others. He knew, as a teacher, this would be called 'partiality'. But if his act of partiality could help a child with great potential excel much better than others, he was ready to accept the accusations of partiality.

After all, Lily was different.

The afternoon light fell into the room through the open casement, the golden hue making the simple room glow. Pete sat on the chair at the table with little Lily by his side, doing all the sums patiently. It was just the first day of tutoring and he couldn't believe Lily was being such a good, obedient and sweet child, unlike the naughty rebellious self of her at school. Pete lowly chuckled at this.

The teacher looked around, his eyes scanning the room. Everything was so simple yet it felt so warm and homely. There was nothing too luxurious, worn out walls, simple furnitures, dim illumination and certain other substances that wouldn't sum up to a great amount of money. The simplicity of the abode made Pete realise that the inhabitant wasn't rich at all, rather say a lower middle class resident whose mere earning had somehow given the two beings a roof to sheild themselves.

But Pete was looking for something else. His eyes scanned the entire room...yet he couldn't find what he was actually looking for.

Maybe it's in his living room?

"Teacher," called the child softly, her sweet voice piercing Pete's chains of thoughts and bringing him back to reality. As he looked at the child, he saw her holding the papers in her hand, "It's done!"

It wasn't the first time but Pete could never disagree the striking similarity between the child and the boy who was her parent, especially their eyes. Rich brown, big, bright and shiny! He always baffled him as to how the girl inherited such unique and exquisite genes from her father...as though she was almost birthed by him.

Perhaps she didn't get enough of her mother's genes by terms of appearance?

The teacher gently took the papers from the her and started checking it, simultaneously correcting all the mistakes. The occasional sips from the coffee he was served made him feel refreshed and he couldn't ignore the fact that the
'server' might be a good cook as well.

Well...apparantly...Pete definitely found the parent much more interesting than the job...don't blame him!

The evening was up and the Sun was almost down the crimson horizon. It was time for him to leave and no sooner had he informed the child about his departure, than came the high pitched 'Mamaaaaa' cry from the little one. Pete still couldn't shake the thought as to why she called him Mama but something about it sounded really cute to him too.

"Oh Sir you're leaving?" came the soft voice from the 'Mama', who came and stood beside his daughter. Pete couldn't help but look at him, well, almost examine him. The tattered patched up apron soaked at places, the drenched hands and the sweaty face made it evident that he had been working in the kitchen. But his beautiful smile amidst all this mess was enough to make him glow.

"Oh yes," replied the teacher, his eyes still on the parent, "By the way, Lily's performance was amazing today I must say," he quickly changed the topic so that Way wouldn't think anything creepy about him, "Can't believe it's my first day of tutoring her and her performance was so good. See little lady, you're capable of anything!"

Pete gave the child another high five, the latter giggling in glee. Way felt happy hearing his child's progress. He couldn't help but feel so grateful towards the teacher.

"So I'll take my leave today, Mr. Way," said Pete, picking his bag up and walking towards the door, "I'll come tomorrow as well. I've given her some assignments to do...I hope she completes all of them."

"I will Teacher! I will," came the excited reply.

"Aww my baby," Way said, as he lifted the girl in her arms, giving her a little kiss on her cheek and looked at the man in front of him, "I'm so glad you're helping us out Sir. B-But...you still haven't said anything about the fee-"

"Don't worry, Mr. Way," assured the man, "You don't have to worry about it right now. We can talk about it later. And please don't call me Sir. I have a name, don't I?" He wasn't sure but something told him that Way was slightly blushing and he felt glad, "Uh...well I must leave. The sky doesn't look very clear right now. Thank you Mr. Way. And byee Lily!"

"Byeeeee!"

And with one last look at those two pairs of identical brown eyes, Pete left.

I'll have to find out that thing!

* * *

For the next seven days, things were going fine...

Until that one cursed Monday.

Pete was busy with the little girl in the front room, teaching her, while Way was inside the kitchen doing all the afternoon chores. The day was bright and clear, a little cold yet sunny and warm. Everything was going normal until Pete and Lily suddenly heard a loud crash from the kitchen.

Fearing the worst, Pete asked Lily to sit at her place and sprinted into the kitchen, frantically looking around...only to meet a horrible sight.

Way was lying on the floor, senseless. He was probably holding a bowl of soup and as he fell, he dropped the bowl and pieces of glass and food lay scattered across the floor. Way had hit his forehead at the corner of a table nearby and blood oozed from the injured region. Pete quickly ran to him and without thinking twice, pulled him in his lap and started shaking him, calling his name, his other hand trying to stop the bleeding. But even after all this, Way didn't wake up. Cold sweats ran down his forehead, as he immediately pulled out his phone and called an ambulance, his hands trembling vigorously.

His eyes fell on the man's face, and he could swear he felt his heart tearing apart. Way's face looked so tired and worn out. The dark circles underneath his eyes showed lack of sleep and the paleness in his countenance and dryness of his lips, together with his lanky self showed lack of proper nutrition. As Pete scooped up the fainted lad in his arms and ran outside to the ambulance, closely followed by his confused, crying daughter, the only thing Pete prayed was his well being.

Hope he'll be alright!
