14: Reggaeton Lento

After the initial shock and laughing on Adam's side, Kalo eventually came out of the bathroom with Dimitri following behind. Some perverted and inappropriate remarks from Adam later, Kalo finally agreed to lend some of her clothes for clubbing.

Fiona had been standing by in the corner, hopelessly watching the whole thing while trying to convince herself this wasn't completely crazy. She was already regretting saying yes to this, but by the time Adam had gotten the clothes from Kalo, it felt too late to change her mind.

Therefore, with Adam waiting outside the bathroom stall, Fiona quickly changed into a red salsa dress from Kalo's pile. As for shoes, she was lucky that Kalo used the same size and borrowed her a couple of modest heels. She hoped she wouldn't break them trying to dance like they did.

"Have fun tonight, alright?" Kalo said as she loosened Fiona's bun from her head and let her curls fall free in a haphazard mess around her face. She sprayed something on them that made them shine, then grinned at her through the mirror. "Good luck with him. Man, you'll need it."

Then, without further explanation, she and Fiona came out of the bathroom to a waiting Adam who stood leaned up against the railings to the staircase. He looked up from his tapping foot on the floor and laid eyes on Fiona.

"Oh, shit," He said, smiling slowly. "Shit, shit, shit. I'm not sure I'm authorized to take you out like that. I'm only one guy."

Kalo rolled her eyes dramatically, but then urged Fiona towards him. "Seriously. Good luck."

Adam chuckled and slung an arm around Fiona. Then, leading her down the stairs, he gave her a glance. "Do you trust me that I'll make sure that tonight will be fun? Say no and I won't hold it agains you."

Fiona took a deep breath and looked down at her getup. She had come this far, so what was the point of going back now? She might as well get it over with. "I somewhat trust you."

Adam's grin broadened. "Good enough. I'll take it. Let's go, tutu. Shit, you're going to knock them dead in that dress."

~~~
The second they walked into the Latin club, the booming music hit them. Fiona dropped her jaw and gawked as Adam pulled her inside with an amused grin.
The vibe in the club was so lit and so alive, everyone was moving and dancing to the music almost without stopping. The crowd was thick, the people were nearly impossible to get through, and the air was so humid you felt like you were walking into a sauna. Everyone's skin glistened and made everyone in the room seem like they were glowing. Fiona felt completely overwhelmed, but Adam seemed to know what to do.
He very quickly led them along the side of the room, around the dance floor where couples were dancing all different kinds of dances. Fiona could recognize a few basic steps here and there, some batchata, a little salsa... and a few dancing reggaeton; It was impossible to miss those couples. They were practically grinding publicly on the dance floor.
And they looked good while doing it.
"This way," Adam chuckled at her shocked expression. Her mouth was probably hanging half open. She quickly closed it and let him lead her on.
There was no such thing as an empty space in the club, but Adam managed to find a less crowded area of the dance floor and immediately pulled her to his chest. Fiona gasped, but Adam just smiled and caught her hips.
"Are you ready?" He whispered in her ear, sliding his hands up her sides. His hands caught hers and braided them with his own. Fiona suddenly couldn't breathe.
"No," She whispered back, her heart pounding almost as loudly as the music. She couldn't believe she was here in a club with him... surrounded by people dancing who could see them...
But Adam was standing so close to her and he was holding on to her. He wouldn't let her make a fool of herself.
His left hand hooked under her chin and lifted her face when she looked down shyly. Fiona nervously looked up at him and saw him smile slowly before poking her nose.
"You're ready, princess. Now move."
Fiona's breath froze in her throat when he then let his hand curl around her back and let the other clench her hand. Grinning, he nodded, and before she could argue, he pushed them into motion.
Panicked, Fiona looked down at their feet, deadly scared to step on him or someone else with her high heels. Her feet moved on their own accord though, and Adam lifted her chin once more and made her meet his eyes.
"Don't think," He reminded her and leaned in to her ear. "Feel, Fee. Feel the music. Feel the room. Feel this."
He grabbed her hand and placed it over his chest, tapping his finger against hers to the same drum as his heart and the music. Fiona exhaled shakily, the anxiety still tickling in her body.
Let go. Just let go this once, she kept telling herself. Stop thinking and just... let go.
Almost as if sending her ease up, Adam tugged her closer to his chest and pressed a hand on her lower back. She didn't even realize the music had switched, but suddenly it was faster, moving on eight beats rather than four. Salsa.
"You got this," He pecked her cheek with a little smile. "Show me what you got, tutu."
And then he pushed her away and swung her around.
Fiona expelled a little shocked squeal, but then quickly fell into the beat as Adam pulled her back and caught her. He grinned like a sonofabitch when her hands automatically fell to his shoulder and caught his as well. She pressed her lips together and decided to keep going.
Let go. Just let go.
The people around them were dancing salsa as well, spinning and twirling around, but Fiona found herself forgetting the surroundings when she caught Adam's smile on his face. There was something in it... pride? Or was it just plain happiness?
And that's when she realized.
He was mirroring her own face.
Her lips were split and her cheeks were hurting from grinning too hard. When he spun around, she spun around afterwards, and then he spun her around some more. Then she was against his chest, then she wasn't, and then she was facing him again.
She was doing it. She was dancing in front of others, spinning and twirling for the first time in... forever. She was really doing it.
She was dancing
"Fuck, yeah," Adam grinned when she twirled around and spun against him. He caught her and kept on dancing, shaking his head and laughing. "Fuck yeah, Fiona!"
She let out a small scream and couldn't help but laugh with him, quickly pressing one hand in front of her mouth before he caught it again and spun her around once more. He dipped her down, then pulled her up again and to his chest. He kept her there and swept a hand over her hair, pushing it away from her face.
"There you are," He whispered, his lips still split in a proud smile. "There you so fucking are. You're dancing, Fee. How does it feel?"
Fiona was panting. She didn't realize how much air you needed when you were happy, dancing and grinning all at the same time. Adam was breathing hard against her as well, both of them out of breath. How did it feel? It felt... "I..."
The music suddenly changed again. The beat dropped way down, and the people on the dance floor seemed to grind into a slower motion. Fiona looked around to see the women moving closer to their partners and their partners taking a better hold of them. And then that first beat hit.
Reggaeton.
Adam pulled her closer and made Fiona snap her eyes back to him. He smiled mischievously and then patted her thigh. "It's reggaeton mixed with a little kizumba. It's not that hard, just follow my lead."
"But I don't know how to—"
He shut her up by placing a single finger over her lips. Then, meeting her eyes, he slowly slid his hand down her side... down to her hip... to her rear...
And then he moved.
Fiona's breath vanished and her skin felt hot as he moved her hips slowly, grinding them against his as he stepped forward, then backwards. He tapped her thigh again, and Fiona instinctively moved her hips, letting him guide them. Her eyes shut when he then lowered his head and slowly continued their sensual dance. He was right there, lost in the music with her.
Fiona felt the air thicken in the club, getting harder to breathe, but easier to move. With her eyes closed, she felt him spin her around and press her back against his chest. She exhaled slowly and let the music lead her body.
Just let go.
Her head fell backwards against his shoulder and he slowly lifted her arms and hooked them around his neck. Then, breathing against her skin, she felt as Adam slowly let his hand slide up her legs, landing on her hips. Fiona felt absolutely scorched when he exhaled hard and then arched his hips towards her, the same time he made her own grind backwards.
The sweat dribbled off her skin.
It was like everything had faded away except the two of them. Adam's body pressed tightly against hers, every hot, hard inch grinding against her own. He was murmuring the words to the Spanish song right against her ear, and suddenly it wasn't so annoying. The Spanish words did something else to her, and the breathy, deep rasp of his voice mouthing the words sent nothing but heat through her body. It felt like everything inside her was melting.
His hands then suddenly moved again, pressing over her lower belly in a sort of triangle before they slowly slid up again, following the length of her body and up her arms. While swaying side to side, still grinding, their fingers intertwined behind his neck.
He exhaled against her neck again, and the hot air sent another feverish shiver through Fiona. Something stirred inside her, something that had been stirring for weeks; Now, it felt more awake than ever, right in this moment as she and Adam were the only people left in the world.
"Adam..."
He spun her around and pressed a leg between hers, keeping them moving as he hummed. She opened her eyes an inch and saw his were completely closed as well, lost in the rhythm.
Her gaze then fell to his lips.
"Kiss me," She whispered.
As if awoken from a spell, his eyes slowly opened and met hers. But instead of the shock she thought would meet her, all she saw streaming from his eyes was...
Need.
"Kiss you?" He whispered, swiping her hair away from her sweaty neck. He cupped it and met her eyes. "Are you sure?"
He didn't even question it. Didn't even object. Fiona felt her breath leave her, and with a pull inside her, she tugged at his shirt, wanting him closer. "Yes."
Wait for the perfect moment, he said.
He was her perfect moment. He had been for weeks.
His lips twitched ever so slightly, but then he moved down, smiling harder. "Thank God."
And then he pressed his lips against hers.
Fiona felt everything inside her light on fire. His lips were so soft, but so persistent. He kissed her hard, but with gentle movements, his hands sweeping across her face softly and cupping the nape of her neck. Without even thinking, she pulled him even closer and curled her fingers into his hair. She felt his lips tug upwards.
It seemed so completely crazy. Fiona couldn't help but smile back as he begun chuckling lowly and pecked her mouth as they slowly swayed to the music, still.
There they were, in the middle of the club full of dancing people... and they were kissing.
And not a single fuck was given.
Slowly pulling apart, both of them stared at each other for a moment before they both started grinning. Adam smiled the hardest. Without wasting a moment, he pulled her into his chest and hugged her tightly while chuckling. "Thank God," He said again.
"Why do you keep saying that?" Fiona asked when he pulled back. He shook his head and just cupped her face again, leaning down to her forehead. With a soft peck, he kissed it.
And then the music filled the room again, just as Adam pulled them into motion. For once, Fiona let it all go and didn't think as she let him take the lead. She was so perfectly happy, nothing was going to ruin this night. Not her stupid thoughts or her anxious concerns.
Tonight, it was just the two of them.
—And a hundred other people who suddenly seemed to scamper around them.
The music was almost overruled as someone suddenly shouted something loudly in Spanish into the whole club. Everyone seemed to snap out of it, including Adam who lifted his head and looked around. People immediately started rushing towards the exit.
"What's happening?" Fiona asked, panicked. Was the police raiding the place? Were they going to get arrested? Oh, God. What if it was some sort of mob war—
"Come on," Adam quickly tucked her along and pulled her towards the entrance as well. With some effort, he managed to mash them through the crowd and get to the outside. And what met them... had everyone hollering.
"¡Lluvia!"
Thick, loud and countless drops of water droplets had started to fall from the sky in what felt like a blessing from above—literally. For the first time I over three weeks, it finally, finally rained; The drought was over.
Everyone started cheering, and all of a sudden the party seemed to move outside. Everyone started dancing in the rain, the music still booming from inside now pouring out onto the street. The roads quickly became a wet mess, puddles forming faster than fast and splashing everywhere. And right there in the centre stood Fiona and Adam, caught in the middle of all the madness.
Adam laughed loudly and turned his head to the sky, lifting his hands up. With a loud whoop, he bellowed out with the rest of them; "Fuck, yeah! Finally!"
Fiona couldn't help but laugh as well. When Adam shook his head like a dog, the water sprayed everywhere. They were both already soaked, the rain coming down hard. Thunder echoed ominously in the background of the music.
"Come on," Adam then chuckled, taking her hand and pressing a quick kiss to it. "Let's go!"
And then, with nothing but the clothes on their backs, they ran down the street in the pouring rain, laughing and screaming like maniacs.
~~~

By the time Adam had led them to their destination, the thrill of the rain had passed. It was now pouring down buckets and the thunder was rolling in over the whole city. One moment it was warm and humid, the next it was shivering and cold.

Adam quickly led them up the stairs to the most modest little apartment Fiona had ever seen, in the most dodgy neighborhood she had ever been in—and she had been to her fair share of dodgy neighborhoods, but this was one she wouldn't even walk a hypothetical dog in. Even the bushes looked sketchy.

Unlocking the front door in two places, Adam let her walk in first before following behind her. He closed the door and locked it up tightly, and whilst doing so, Fiona looked around.

The world's smallest kitchen and dining area was crammed into one corner of the tiny apartment while the living room seemed to connect through it. Just on the other side she could see a black figure sleeping on a futon couch, a small flickering of a TV illuminating the person's body.

"My grandma," Adam whispered. "Come on." He then wordlessly took her hand and pulled her along to a closed door.

Stepping inside what had to be his bedroom, Fiona looked around and hugged herself from the cold and the jitters nipping at her skin. His room was even smaller than the kitchen, barely able to fit a bed and single small dresser. The rest of his stuff laid spread around on the floor in an unorganized mess; shoes, food boxes, dirty clothes, deodorant bottles and energy drinks. There even laid a small teddy bear in one corner.

A loud sound from a TV suddenly came from the other side of the wall of his room, opposite the living room where his grandma slept. Adam seemed to routinely walk up to the wall and banged hard at it, before shouting something in Spanish. After a moment, the TV sounds lowered a bit.

"Here," He then said, quickly walking back to his dresser and grabbing something from it. He handed her a large T-shirt. "You can dry yourself with that."

Fiona hesitantly took it and gave a nod as a thank you. She didn't trust her voice right now, not when he grabbed another shirt himself and started drying off as well.

Both of them silently dried off, and while they did, Fiona felt how hard her heart was beating in her chest. She couldn't stop looking around at his room, taking in all of the impressions. The walls seemed moldy, and the carpeted floors were dirty. Even his bed seemed more like a bad spring pallet rather than a mattress. Worn out and misshaped.

He really lived like this, she thought. This boy who deserved the world lived like this... and still smiled every day.

Fiona slowly turned around when she sensed Adam looking at her. It was completely dark, and the only window in his room was a thin basement-like window at the very top of his wall. The rain beat against it and the lightening flashes occasionally lid it up and gave them a few seconds of light.

And it was in those seconds of light she saw how his entire face had changed as he looked upon her.

Slowly stepping closer, he carefully cupped her cheek and looked at her. Fiona felt her breath shallowly come out between her lips as their eyes connected in that moment.

All the joking was gone. He was looking at her like... like he had been waiting for her—waiting for this moment where he could finally kiss her and she wouldn't run away. Maybe he had even prayed for it...

'Thank God.'

Without overthinking, Fiona stepped closer and wrapped her hands around his neck. She dropped the shirt in her grip, just as Adam pulled her closer and breathed slowly against her lips.

Leaning down, just as she pushed up on her toes, they met halfway. Fiona felt the rush inside her when his mouth came down on hers and kissed her, slowly, deeply, but also couldn't deny the need in her own. His hand knotted in her tangled hair, desperately pulling her closer. Fiona responded by tugging him closer by pulling at his wet shirt.

This was crazy. Fiona couldn't breathe as both of them seemed to surrender to whatever heat seemed to have left the city and all but flown into this room. Her hands were gripping on to him, and surprisingly, they weren't shaking. She felt so safe and so comfortable, and it was all because of him.

Kissing him harder, Fiona let out a small, involuntary sound when his tongue tryingly swept along her lower lip. Then, with a hard breath, he dipped into her mouth and let his tongue slide against hers, Fiona following his movements as if they were dancing. He took the lead, but she somehow knew what to do.

But more importantly, she knew what she wanted to do.

Fear was not going to control her for one more second of her life.

Ripping at his wet shirt, she started tugging it upwards the same time he pulled away a single inch. He met her eyes, molten and so ready for her, and without further ado, he lifted his shirt and pulled it off. Throwing it away carelessly on the floor, he cupped her face once again and brushed her cheek before dipping down once more.

Fiona felt so lost. She clung to his shoulders and didn't stop to think when his hands picked her up off the floor. Suddenly she was seated on his lap, arms around his neck, his lips still pressed hotly against hers. The thunder loudly rolled over them again.

Adam's hands rested right around her hips, tucking up her dress so she could straddle him better. They found solace at the top of her ass, squeezing her closer as their lips fused together harder. Fiona braced herself on the wall behind his bed as he breathed erratically and pulled her closer.

God, she didn't want this night to stop.

Tucking at the straps of her drenched dress, Fiona managed to pull her arms free, the same time she felt Adam reach for the zipper on the back. Zipping it down, he helped her tug it up off her body, pulling back to let her hoist it up and off. They both tossed it away to join his shirt on the floor.

Sitting in only her underwear, Fiona knew she should've felt conscious somewhere, but she didn't. Adam's hands came to her skin the same second the dress was gone, and the way he touched her made her feel appreciated and beautiful with a single hot breath. A groan grated at the back of his throat as his lips traveled down her neck to her cleavage. Fiona tilted her head back and buried her hands in his hair.

"Fiona," He gutturally whispered against her skin—almost cursed her name in a sacrilegious way. When his mouth kissed her chest, she felt it rise and fall with erratic pants, sweat beginning to form on her skin. His hands slid up her sides again, before going down and landing on her ass. He squeezed hard and dragged an involuntary moan from her lips. The sound even surprised Fiona.

All that could be heard in the darkness of the room was the silent sound of their lips meeting accompanied by the heavy rain and thunder that raged outside. Fiona ignored all of it as she gripped on to Adam's head and met his lips kiss for kiss. Both of them were breathless, panting against each other's mouthes, but couldn't seem to stop.

"Fiona," Adam whispered again, breaking her name in in between kisses. He groaned in his throat when she moved her lips down and kissed it, sending shivers down her own spine at the vibrations of his voice. "Fiona."

She pulled back and met his eyes, seeing his own heavy lids lift to look at her. His jungly green eyes were almost black with desire, but he stilled anyway as they both caught their breath. Fiona felt him cup her face and peck her lips one last time, before pulling back with resolution.

"I don't want to rush this," He whispered, brushing his thumb against her cheek. "I waited too long to ruin it in one night. Tell me you understand."

Fiona tried to find her voice, but her breath was still missing. She therefore had to settle for a nod, her fingers curling in his hair.

She hadn't stopped to think about any of it. Once you let go, it was really hard to stop. She would've gone all the way simply because of the way he made her feel.

But now that someone seemed to have turned on their brain, she realized he was right; tonight wasn't supposed to be about that. In her own way, she had been waiting for this, too. But not tonight.

Tonight had been the best night of her life, and this was more than enough to complete it. She had finally broken through her lifelong fears and had found something truly special on the other side.

– And she wasn't going to ruin it by rushing through it.

With a smile, Adam therefore kissed her one final time before he pulled them down on his bed. Unbuttoning his still damp pants, he quickly kicked them off before tucking his sheets over them.

Fiona snuggled back against him as he laid an arm around her and pulled her to his chest. With a sigh, both of them then fell into a peaceful lull from the rain.

"Hey, Fee?" Adam then suddenly whispered near her ear.

She hummed silently, almost asleep already. There was something so comforting about being in his arms all the time...

"Isn't this the life?"

There was a smile in his voice, and even without looking, Fiona smiled back silently.

With him in it... yes, it was.

And it would never be the same without him again.
