Quest to kill the Kraken

❤️💜17KKKKKK MY GOOOAAALLL💜❤️

---Nightmare's POV----

I hissed softly as the darkness swallowed me up, covering me like a thick blanket.

I blinked rapidly, letting my eye adjust to the change of light. Lucky for me, I've got pretty strong night vision. An effect of the curse.

I glanced back the way I came, looking at the small glowing light that seemed so far away. Soon it would be gone completely, throwing me into pitch black darkness.

I shuddered at the thought. I can't see perfectly in darkness. Just better than most.

Darkness used to scare me. But now I find it...comforting almost. In the darkness no one can see me. No one can see the monster that I am. No one can see what I've become.

I sighed, thinking of Cross as I continued to walk down the dark, gnarly passageway of stone.

He seemed in edge, desperate for me not to go. Desperate to not be left alone with Geno.

Honestly I'd rather him be here with me where I know he's safe, but Geno has a point about the while 'too valuable' thing.

Part of me was wondering if Geno was planning something. But I forced myself to shake away that thought, Geno wants to save the ocean and live. He wouldn't risk doing something stupid again. Would he?

I growled, making my mind focus on the task at hand.

I need to get down to the centre of this cave, where the Kraken's main body and life source would be along with the key to the chest.

I then need to somehow kill the Kraken, snatch the key, run back up to Cross and Geno and then save the ocean.

Piece of cake.

Not.

I sighed, letting my tentacles feel along the walls besides me, checking for any side passages or unseen things that could help me.

I jolted as one of them hit something cold, smooth and hard.

I let it curl around it, blinking curiously as I tried to see what it could be through the thick darkness.

It was a torch.

The sort that's shaped like a cone and has gunpowder or something in the top so that if you light it you have a flaming light to guide you.

I quickly realised it wasn't attached properly to the wall and pulled it off with my tentacles while my hands searched in my pockets for some matches.

After a whole minute of fumbling desperation I felt my fingers close round the reassuring rectangular shape of a matchbox. My thumb rubbed over the rough side, making me shiver as I pulled it out of my pocket.

"If these don't work I swear to God..." I muttered as I slowly slid the matchbox open, picking up one of the thin, slender sticks.

Shakily, I struck the first match against the box, cursing as it snapped in half.

I took in a calm breath before striking a second match, smiling as the cave suddenly gained a soft orange glow as the little flame danced on the end of the small wooden stick.

I quickly lit the torch, not wanting the match flame to die out.

Instantly the cavern was filled with light, the shadows being pushed away by the brilliant flame that gave off ten times more light than the little matchstick.

I checked out my surroundings quickly before continuing to walk, my tentacles now laying limp behind me, no longer needed to feel across the jagged stone walls.

I could feel myself descending as I walked, the tunnel slowly starting to slope the further down I got.

I sighed, my eye glancing around briefly as I continued, looking for anything interesting, or a sign that I was actually getting somewhere.

Surely I'd be at the centre soon, right?

Apparently not.

Five minutes later and I was still descending. This is bullshit.

I groaned, slowing to a stop. At this point I feel like Geno's just gone and set me up for something that doesn't even exist so that he can carry out some plan.

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if he did.

No sooner than that thought had entered my mind, I panicked slightly, thinking about how I'd left Cross up there with him, all alone.

I looked back the way I came, staring into the pitch black darkness. It would take ages to get back up there.

"Geno you little pice of shit..." I muttered to myself as I sped up slightly, praying that he hadn't set me up on some bullshit wild goose chase.

I blinked, raising the torch up as I realised that the cavern roof was starting to rise slightly.

I grinned. Maybe this wouldn't be a fruitless adventure at all.

If a continuous cavern's roof starts to rise after meters and meters of no action then it means an opening or a cavern is coming up.

I glanced around, quickening my pace. The tunnel roof was definitely getting bigger. And I was no longer descending as I walked. It was flat-ish.

A few seconds later and the tunnel widened out completely, leading me into a massive, massive cavern.

I froze, blinking at how the cavern seemed to almost...glow?

Small green crystals were decorated around the ceiling and walls, and they were glowing. Giving the whole cavern an almost radioactive feel.

Half of the room was filled with deep, dark water that lapped level with where I was standing.

I shuddered. In the middle of the cavern, half submerged in the water, was the Kraken.

I must say, it didn't look very impressive from here.

It looked like a big lump of rotting flesh floating in the water. But I knew better than that.

This was the vulnerable part of the Kraken. The weak spot.

Already I had a massive problem.

It was surrounded by water.

Water.

I stared at the water, growling.

Because growling at inanimate things is always the answer.

I looked over the water. There's no way in hell I'm getting in there.

Nope. Nu uh. No way. Not a chance.

My eye narrowed as I suddenly picked something out in the water. I held the torch over in that direction, blinking at what I saw.

It was a stepping stone.

I let a tentacle reach the torch out further and grinned.

Stepping stones.

A whole trail of them.

Leading right to the Kraken.

On the final stepping stone, which was right next to the Kraken, had a small pedestal on it. And in the middle was Cross' locket with the key inside.

I breathed in sharply, growling at the water one last time before taking a tentative hop forwards, landing on the first stepping stone.

Thank God they were stable.

So far...

I cautiously made my way over, windmilling my arms every time I started to loose balance or slip. Falling in was not an option today.

I looked up, seeing that I was nearly there and sped up a bit, getting a little cocky.

Luckily it paid off. I made it to the wider rock with the pedestal on without falling in. Thank the lord.

I looked at the heaving piece of flesh by my side, cringing and gagging at it's awful, disgusting smell.

Shaking my head quickly, I pulled out both of my swords, wondering how on Earth I was going to kill this thing.

I stood there, thinking for a moment when suddenly a scream rang out, echoing through the cavern.

It seemed to have come from back in the cavern above...I froze, stiff with tension.

That scream...

I recognised it.

Another scream of fear rang out, this time being someone screaming my name desperately.

Cross!

I looked at my swords, deciding to fuck planning and just stab it.

I lunged forwards, stabbing both blades deep into its decaying flesh before yanking them down, both in an arch. As soon as the sword blades met I pulled them out, having made some sort of an oval cut.

No sooner than I'd done that the loudest screech the world will ever hear rang out from the Kraken as the piece of flesh I'd cut just peeled away, letting its guts and insides start to gush out everywhere.

I quickly snatched the locket from the pedestal, booking it and running, leaping from stepping stone to stepping stone as the cavern started to collapse around me.

Once on the other side, I didn't even look back at the Kraken. I ran as fast as I could back up the tunnel, my mind focused on Cross' terrified screams.

If anythings happened to him...

I shook my head, putting on a burst of speed as the tunnel started sloping back up.

Another scream rang out, mixing with the dying calls of the Kraken.

It was Cross again. Another scream for help, sounding desperate and absolutely terrified.

I scrambled forwards, dropping the torch as a small ball of light appeared in the distance, getting closer and closer as I sprinted forwards.

I burst out of the tunnel, into the main cavern and froze.

In the centre, by the pedestal, Geno had Cross pinned to the floor as he stood over him, grinning.

His foot was stood on Cross' wrist, crushing it.

My eye widened as he raised the sword in his hands over his head, ready to swing it down and split Cross' skull.

I lunged forwards, knowing I'd never make it in time.

"NO!"
