Chapter 5: The Ageing Potion
I was awake before the twins the next morning, and decided to go to the Great Hall without them. They'd find me, and I wanted to look at my schedule before they snatched it from me to compare theirs.
I sat by myself at the Gryffindor table, leaving room for the boys to sit when they finally rolled out of bed. I filled my plate with apple cinnamon oatmeal, and some peanut butter toast before grabbing my schedule from my school bag. 'Great' I thought as I examined it, 'Double potions first thing, what a cherry way to start the day.'
It wasn't all bad though, I got two more fun classes in the afternoon, divination, and defence against the dark arts. And with Mad-Eye Moody as the professor, it was looking to be an interesting year.
Suddenly my schedule was yanked from my hands, I looked up to see Fred Weasley standing behind me, dangling my schedule high above my head. "Morning, love." He said, claiming the seat beside me.
Lee and George took a seat on the other side of the table from us, making a more even conversation. "Morning, fellas. Fred, why don't you put my schedule down so we can all compare ours on the table."
He did, and I noticed when he put his beside mine, they were almost identical. "Fred! I thought we were supposed to have all our classes together!" George exclaimed.
Fred smiled sheepishly, which wasn't something he often did. "Oh yeah, that's weird. They must've switched my schedule around."
I looked at him quizzically, none of us bought it, but didn't push. My heart fluttered, 'Did he switch all his classes to be with me?'
I pushed the thought from my head quickly. No need to get my hopes up, it was probably a coincidence. Maybe they did move it around on him.
I had all my classes today with Fred, I didn't realize he had ever taken divination, but it would probably be more enjoyable with him cracking jokes with me. I smiled at the thought. George and Lee had double potions with us in the morning, which we all complained about for a few minutes, and planned how we could make Snape's Monday mornings hellish.
Fred's eyes suddenly lit up. "Georgie! This is the perfect opportunity for our ageing potion!" He exclaimed.
"Yes! Perfect!" George replied, before turning to me. "Will you help us swipe the ingredients we need? We won't be able to brew it in class, Snape'll know immediately."
"Yes, I guess I'll help you." I sighed, "We could use Moaning Myrtle's bathroom? No one ever goes in there."
"Brilliant!" Fred exclaimed, "Glad you've come 'round, love."
I blushed and quietly continued eating, letting the boys plan. I was to grab the newt spleens and porcupine quills, while Fred rounded up the other few ingredients. George swiped a banana from the breakfast table, the easiest ingredient to grab for the potion. Lee promised to keep watch with George, but Fred had a better idea. "I say, we create a distraction." His eyes had their familiar mischievous glint to them.
"Got something in mind?" Lee asked.
"Oh yes, I think this is the perfect opportunity to test the newest invention from Weasley and Weasley, the Decoy Detonator." Fred said proudly, George began to nod enthusiastically.
"How does it work?" I asked.
Fred looked delighted. "So, you set it off, and it shoots away as far as it can go, and makes an absolute racket. It also lets off a cloud of black smoke, it's the perfect distraction for any situation!"
"Sounds perfect, you got one handy?" Lee asked, as eager as the rest of us to cause some trouble.
"No, I'll have to run back to the common room, I'll go now. You guys better get to potions!" Fred said, rising from the table.
George stood as well. "No, I'll go, Fred. I know exactly where they are. If we send you, you won't be able to find them for the next hour!" He offered with a laugh.
As George was setting off, I could've sworn he looked over his shoulder and winked at me. But I was probably seeing things. "C'mon, love, the dungeons await." Fred said grandly, offering me his arm.
I laughed and hooked my arm with his, allowing him to lead me to potions. I enjoyed every minute of the walk, I could definitely see myself hanging onto Fred like this often. But it was just a friendly gesture, nothing more, I reminded myself.
When we arrived at the potions classroom in the dungeons, we opted for tables at the back of the classroom, where we would draw the least attention. Fred sat down first, pulling me down into the chair beside him. "Guess we're partners today." He said, smiling.
I sent a silent thanks to George for volunteering to get the decoy detonator, and smiled back at Fred. George came in shortly after, somehow concealing his hidden contraption well. If I hadn't known he was bringing it, I wouldn't have noticed it peeking out of his bag. George looked shocked when he saw Fred sitting with me, it was always the twins together. I felt guilty, and almost offered to switch, before George reassured me it was alright, and that Fred was too smelly for him to sit beside anyway. He took the open seat next to Lee, and silently pulled the decoy detonator onto his lap. "Okay," he whispered, "plan is: as soon as Snape gives us a potion, and everyone starts for the supplies on the wall, Fred and Louise, I'll wait till you're close, then drop it. Sound good?"
We all nodded in agreement, Fred the most eager. I barely listened to Snape droning on about whatever potion we were doing, I didn't care. I was too excited, adrenaline coarser through me as he announced the ingredients we needed. And when he told us to go collect them, I kept it cool while inside I was just jittering waiting for our plan to be set into motion. Right on cue, as soon as Fred and I were within an inch of the ingredient wall, there was a loud bang, and clanking sound. I watched as Snape whirled towards the noise, and seized the moment. I grabbed the ingredients we needed as discreetly and quickly as I could, while the other students attention was on the detonator. I shoved the newt spleens and porcupine quills in the pockets of my robes, and spun around just in time to see the poor little creation explode into little pieces, filling the entire room with a black smoke. "Everyone. Out. Now." Snape seethed, his tone so cold it terrified me.
I quickly felt my way back to the table Fred and I had been at, coughing on the thick smoke. I grabbed my bags quickly, and felt my way from the room again. Outside in the hall my peers were coughing and blinking smoke from their eyes. I found two heads of red hair, and went to them. Fred raised his eyebrows slightly, coughing as well. I nodded slightly, and patted my robe pocket. He smiled, and when I stood beside him he bent down and whispered, "Atta girl."
I blushed and smiled, but I let it drop immediately as I looked up at Snape. He was staring into the smoky classroom, rage in his beady black eyes. "Whoever did this, step forward now, and the consequences won't be so dire. If you don't, expulsion could await you." He sneered,
He turned towards the crowd of students in the hallway, and his eyes bore daggers into Fred and George, who widened their eyes innocently, and shrugged. Snape huffed, "Fine, class dismissed for the morning. But you better believe I will find who did this."
We turned slowly, walking cautiously back the way we had taken to class until we were out of sight and ear shot of Snape. Fred let out a cheer of victory. "That worked beautifully!" He cried.
"Fred, was that thing supposed to blow up?" I asked with a laugh.
He blushed and started rubbing the back of his neck. "Well, not exactly. You're supposed to be able to reuse it. Guess there's a few kinks we gotta work out, but it sure does make a hell of a noise." Fred laughed.
"We have the rest of the morning off, let's go brew this thing!" George suggested.
Fred nodded eagerly in agreement, and I took the lead to Moaning Myrtle's bathroom. I knew Harry, Ron, and Hermione had used it to brew some poly juice potion in their second year. So I was sure we wouldn't be caught. I checked the hall was clear, and opened the door quickly. They ran in behind me, and I shut the door, adding a locking charm just to be sure.
We piled the ingredients we had onto one of the sinks, and I grabbed my cauldron from my bag. "So, where do we start?"

We emerged from the girl's bathroom about halfway through lunch, nobody was in the hall, so we crept out and went back to the Gryffindor common room. Fred and George held their potions carefully in their robes, not wanting to waste their ticket to the Triwizard Tournament. I was still hesitant about them competing, but why would Hogwarts put on something potentially fatal?
"When should we do it, George? I wanna do it as soon as we can." Fred asked as soon as we stepped through the portrait hole.
He proudly pulled the vial out of his pocket and held it up to the light, examining it. "Now?" George suggested, inspecting his own.
Fred beamed. "I like the way you think."
Lee hesitantly held his own vial, clearly conflicted. We dropped our belongings in our dorms, then followed the Weasley twins down to the Great Hall. "You alright, Lee?" I asked quietly.
"Yeah, I'm just worried this is gonna backfire." He admitted, clutching his vial tightly.
"Well, how's this, wait until Fred and George do it first. If they get it in, you know it's safe. If it backfires, you don't make an ass out of yourself." I suggested.
Lee smiled, "Perfect."
Fred and George started yelling in front of us, suddenly running into the Great Hall. I hung back with Lee, smiling as the two dorks showed off their potions. They gave high fives to people as they passed, saying "thank you, thank you."
"We've done it lads!" George declared.
"Cooked it up just this morning." Fred added.
"It's not going to work." Hermione sang.
I hadn't seen her sitting there, Fred and George knelt down on either side of her. "Oh yeah?" Fred laughed.
"And why's that, Granger?" George asked.
"You see that age line?" She gestured to the glowing blue circle cast around the Goblet of Fire, "Dumbledore drew that. A genius like Dumbledore isn't going to be fooled by something so pathetically dim witted."
"But that's why it's so brilliant!" Fred exclaimed.
"Because it's so pathetically dim witted!"
The twins rose, standing on a bench. They shook their potions, and uncorked them. "Ready, Fred?"
"Ready, George!"
They crossed arms and took a sip from their vials. They didn't have very much, they only needed to age a few months. I held my breath as the boys jumped together onto the ground, and over the age line. The room was silent for a moment, waiting for something to happen, but nothing did. "Yeeeessssss!" The boys yelled in tandem, doing a gloating victory lap around the goblet.
They pulled their pieces of parchment out of their pockets, and from the corner of my eye I saw Lee pull out his potion. The twins dropped their names into the goblet, and the parchments disappeared. They had actually done it. Something so stupid, had actually worked. The boys let out another hell of victory, high fiving, and going to get their congratulations from their adoring crowd.
Lee uncorked his potion, and just as he was bringing it to his lips, the flame in the goblet of fire began to rage, it shot up, and large sparks spun around, the crowd surrounding the twins backed off quickly. But the goblet only had two targets. Two large sparks hit each Fred and George in the chest, sending them flying. I gasped, and ran towards where they had been thrown. I heard something shatter on the floor behind me, Lee must've dropped his potion. I got to the edge of the crowd around Fred and George, and immediately had to try and stifle laughter.
To my surprise, they had both sprouted white beards, and crazy manes of white hair. Dumbledore must've put quite a fun curse on anyone underage who tried to enter the Triwizard Tournament. The twins laughed at each other, before realizing they each had sprouted their own beards, and immediately pointed accusing fingers at each other. Fred launched himself angrily at George first, and they began wrestling on the ground. Lee and I began howling with laughter. "I did warn you," said a deep, amused voice.
I turned to see Professor Dumbledore coming into the great hall. His twinkling eyes on Fred and George rolling around on the floor. "Miss Davies and Mr Lee, could you take them to the hospital wing? Madam Pomfrey will see them, she's already tending to two other students who attempted to age themselves, as well."
Still laughing, we walked over and separated the boys. Lee grabbed ahold of George, while I grabbed Fred. "Let's go, grandpa. Madam Pomfrey will make you young again." I teased.
Fred seemed to have taken out some of his anger on George, and was now laughing at his appearance. "I don't know, I think I look pretty sexy with this beard, and glorious hair, don't you think so?" He asked, wiggling his eyebrows.
I double diver with laughter again at the sight of an old Fred Weasley trying to be sexy. "Oh Merlin, no. I much prefer you clean shaven. And you've already got quite the mane on you. Besides, ginger suits you better."
"Oh really? Got a thing for gingers, do you?" He asked suggestively.
"I-uh, that's not w-what I'm saying I just-"
"I'm only teasing." Fred laughed. "Let's get to Pomfrey, I can already feel the arthritis kicking in."
