"Do you serve this in the color pink?"

"What?"

"I said, does this item come in pink?"

"Miss, it's a hamburger," the male cashier looked at me like I was insane.

Maybe I was.

"Come on you're holding up the line!" Someone shouted behind me. Everyone else voiced their agreement.

"Patience is a virtue!" I yelled back to them. Ivy grabbed my arm.

"We're so sorry," she spoke, her cheeks flushed red. "We haven't decided yet." She pulls me from the line.

"Hey!" I protest. She drags me outside. The sun is blazing and I lower the pink shades holding my hair from my face back down onto my eyes.

"Really Aubrey? Hamburgers in pink?"

"I've decided to go pinkan."

"What the hell is pinkan?"

"You know, like vegan but pinkan. I only eat foods that are pink now."

Ivy runs her hands down her face like she's at a loss for words. I check my phone.

"It's already past lunch. Are we eating or just going straight to the carnival?"

"Let's just go," she sighs and links arms with me. "You're lucky I love you."

"Right back at ya."

We meet up with Ryan, Trevor, Chanel, and Nikole at the ring toss.

I guess you can call this my little clique. Circle of friends. Whatever you wanna name it. We've all known each other since grade school except Nikole who we met freshman year.

Chanel has beautiful milk chocolate skin and very kinky curly hair which she almost always wears in a bun. Her eyes are big, brown, and doe like. Nikole has midnight colored hair, lightly toasted skin, and stormy grey eyes. I have Starbucks carmel frappachino skin, brown eyes, and pink hair. Ivy is the palest of us all which is just weird since we live in Santa Cruz. Her hair is dirty blonde and her eyes border on black, like obsidian.

"This ones for you baby," Ryan puffs out his chest confidently and aims at the bottles. We all watch amused.

"Here goes!" He tosses the rings in quick succession and each one meets it's target. At the end he picks out the humongous stuffed panda and hands it to Nikole. They share a disgustingly sweet kiss.

"I'd puke if I had any food in me to puke up," Ivy shoots me a look.

"Wait, you two didn't eat lunch?" Chanel asks.

"No because Aubrey here decided to go pinkan."

"The fuck is that?" Trevor had a nasty habit of swearing a lot even though I chastised him millions of times.

"Apparently it's like being vegan but instead she only eats all things pink."

"Alright this obsession has gone too far," Chanel shakes her head.

"It's not an obsession," I defend. "It's a way of life."

"Would you two stop making out for a second and help our friend regain her sanity!" Trevor snaps his fingers in the couples face.

"Wait what?" They break apart.

"It's not that big a deal," I wave my hand. "Hey let's go on Death Trap!"

"Yeah!" Our group agrees but Ivy hangs back.

"You too." I grab her hand.

"But-but," she stumbles for an excuse.

"Think of it this way," Chanel grins. "At least you won't throw up."

Ivy glares at her and we all laugh as we head toward the roller coaster.

Summer vacation. The most important holiday of the year besides Christmas. You can sleep in as late as you want without anyone waking you. You can sit around and be a lazy bum. Basically, it's your reward for suffering thorough the prison they call high school.

But when you're me, summer means waking up at the butt crack of dawn because your mom needs a jogging buddy.

"Get Jason to go with you or something," I mumbled into my pillow referring to my older brother.

"I would but he's not waking up. I even doused him in ice cold water."

"Did you try playing Taylor Swift Blank Space? That'll wake him up screaming."

"Aubrey you really need to exercise."

"Are you calling me fat?" I sat up.

"No honey, exercising isn't just for losing weight. It also helps build up your health. You can't even make it up the stairs without panting out of breath."

"That is so not true," I denied. She gave me a long look.

"Ok maybe it is."

"See? Now put on some comfortable work out clothes." She kissed my forehead and exited my room. I sighed, flopping back down into my bed sheets and examining my room.

I always though the word room was super lame and boring. I referred to this space as the Pink Lounge. The walls were pink. The carpet pink. My bed and everything on it pink. Closet pink. Desk and computer pink. Lamp and window curtains pink. Let's just say everything I owned was that color. The last time Ivy stepped into my room she had on sunglasses to shield her eyes from the color.

It was six am, way too early to be exercising. Nevertheless I dragged myself out of bed and put on pink sweats with a matching tank. I tied my hair up in a loose ponytail and slipped on my Nikes. Then I grabbed my MP3 player and earbuds before heading downstairs to meet my mom.

Every morning she jogged around the neighborhood. This usually took about thirty minutes to an hour. I was really hoping today it only took thirty minutes.

It didn't.

"Can't. Go. On." I wheezed bending over.

"Come on sweetie you can do it! We're almost home," mom encouraged.

"Tell dad I love him!" I collapsed dramatically.

"Get up," she stood over me. "People will think you're crazy laying on the sidewalk like that."

"They already do."

"Just get up."

She jogged the rest of the way. I walked. When we entered the house breakfast was already sizzling on the stove and my mouth watered.

"Bacon?" I said popping up behind my dad and sniffing wildly.

He jumped and the spatula in is hand went flying smacking Jason, who was at the counter, in his face.

"Jesus Aubrey!" He put a hand to his heart. "I thought you were still sleeping!"

"She went jogging with me." Mom downs an entire bottle of water.

"Hey guys, not that this is important or anything but I just got whacked in the face with a spatula." Jason rubs his forehead.

"No one cares," I roll my eyes. Jason was nineteen and attending UCLA as a film major. Every summer he came home instead of going on a real vacation with his friends. Don't ask why. I mean who refuses a free trip to Hawaii?

A crazy person that's who.

"Ready for senior year sis?" Jason asked shoveling in eggs.

"I guess," I was about to take a bite of bacon then paused.

Wait a minute...

"I can't eat this!" I pushed my plate away.

"Why not?" My mom raised a brow at me.

"It's not pink!"

"Here we go," Jason mutters. I shot him a dirty look.

"I've gone pinkan," I explained to my family. "I only eat foods that are pink. Do we have any watermelon?"

My dad coughs. "You mean to tell me you almost scared me half to death and you're not even going to eat what you scared me for?"

"Sorry," I shrug. "Jason can have my portion."

"If being pinkan means I get all your portions then I fully support you sis," Jason grabs my plate.

"This is ridiculous. You'll starve!" My mom tries reasoning with me.

"Mom, try to be more supportive of Aubrey's choices," Jason pats her shoulder.

"Where did I go wrong?" She mutters.
