Chapter 12. Insight

{Location: East town}(Dawn's POV)[Time: Many years ago]

It's chilly up here. I lay on the roof of a small home close to a blacksmith shop. I've spent weeks studying my target. A young man with blonde hair, a white Gi, and a tan staff. He visits the town once a week but hangs around the blacksmith shop a lot. Winter is slowly coming in and sends chills down my spine. And I was right, Chen is keeping eyes on me. Several noodle truck 'break down' here, But I see hints of their driver's tattoos. "There he is." I see my target in the sight. He's holding a small white flower as he gets in range.

Is Destiny right? Will I not kill this man? Or is it a mind game? I want to know the future for myself. I close my eyes. I don't have to kill him yet. I can let him talk with his friends, giving a little more life as a gift.

Wu waves and enters the blacksmith shop. I can't see any other people but his back is to me.

"Oh please," Another voice growls just under me. I look down but he's already on the roof. He's got brown beach boy swept hair, black gi, and red scary eyes, "Killing my brother? You can't do it from here."

He picks up the gun and shakes his head like I'm a dummy. I get up and stare at him, "Let me guess. You're Garmadon?"

"Yes." His eyes fade to green. Didn't Chen say something about his being poisoned? "Who sent you? The snakes?"

I hold my hands up as he slowly points the gun to me, "My name is Dawn. I wasn't going to kill your brother but it's very complicated."

"Who..." His eyes are red again and he now aims for my forehead, "Sent. You?"

I sigh, "Chen." I say the name slowly as his eyes widen. "I wasn't going to pull the trigger. You have to believe me."

Garmadon doesn't move. He just holds the gun steady. I'm not even convinced that I was going to do it. But I have to convince him.

I lick my lips while slowly shuffling my feet forward, "I trained with Chen for five years after I was shipwrecked on his island."

"No one knows where the island is. We don't even know if he's alive." Garmadon's eyes hold their red.

I turn over slowly and pull up the back of my shirt, "Then tell me why a twenty-year-old has this."

Garmadon lets out some more growls as the gun drops to the ground, "I thought Chen was done with his mind games. Come with me." He walks over to the side of the roof and jumps down. "I have something for you."

"What could you have for me?" I gather my things and toss them over.

"A way out from Chen." Garmadon smirks, pick up the gun and walk towards the mountain. I flip off the building and land like a cat.

{Location: CJ's in Crystal Pass}(Seliel's POV)[Present Day]

I knock on the door as the street is dead quiet. I recognize Arthur opening the door for me. He stutters until the door swings open by itself, "The Phantom Ninja."

I touch my neck, I hope this voice monitor will work, "Yes. Is anyone else here?" Perfect, deep and low. Unlike my higher more female voice.

Arthur points to the back. Marci is dressed up as well and eats the free food.

"Thanks." I walk to her, "Slight change in plans."

Marci actually looks good, all light purple and white, "Is this because of the snakes?"

"Yeah. I don't know why the serpentine are attacking again but I'm worried about what they're after. The vengstone." I keep my helmet on despite how good the chocolate cake looks.

"But that far underground. Why would anyone go there?" Marci bites into a small strawberry cake. "It's too hard to get."

BOOM! Something big and explosive rattles the ground.

I look at the heads-up display in my helmet. I'm getting video of a lot of purple snakes invading. One has a mohawk and a scarred eye. "Have enough snakes, I guess you could do anything."

"What's the plan?" Marci stuffs a juicy strawberry in her mouth and gets a little on her chest.

"We let them get stuffed up down there. They don't know the cave like we do. If we divide them into pairs, we can take out one pair then use the service tunnels to get to the next baddie."

Marci pulls on her mask, "Sound perfect."

Arthur comes back and holds out a poster of me, "Could I get your signature?"

I smile under my mask and take the pen he offers, "Sure. Who do I make this out to?"

"Arthur Wright. With a w." He turns around and lets us use his back at a table, "Who's the new person?"

Marci deepens her voice and stands tall, "The name's Sapphire." Once I'm done she signs as well. "Let's go Phantom Ninja." She charges to the door.

"Stay inside," I tell him as I back run in pace with Marci, "Keep all doors locked."

Marci ducks behind a tree like I taught her to as I close the door to CJ's. We blend into the shadows despite the evening sun. We stop about two hundred yards from the closest mine. Marci gasps, "That's a lot of Anacondrai." She whispers.

"Stick to the plan," I whisper back. I spy an air vent a little further down, "Follow me."

{Location: East town.} (Dawn's POV)[Time: Many years ago]

Garmadon must be pulling my leg. He takes me to a loud town center. He sits on a pearly white fountain corner as I keep my guard up, "Please sit."

I keep standing, "I'm fine. I prefer to stand up under a crazy Master than sit."

"Fair point." He folds his arms. His eyes are green now with flickers of red, "So...Chen?"

"It's a long story." I look down. "I've just met someone who says I won't kill Wu. But if Chen finds out that I chickened out..."

"Chen's not that powerful." Garmadon snickers, "Think about it. He's on an island with his most important warriors are with him. The worst he can do is throw bad noodles at you."

I shake my head. People are starting to look and I don't think I'm the center of attention, "Ever hear of Mister Chen's noodle hut?"

"Heard. I haven't gotten to go in." Garmadon smirks in false logic. I wait until it dawns on him. "Oh," finally. "I guess we didn't forbid Chen from recruiting people."

"Oh wow, he put it together. Even I haven't done that." I fold my arms. I'd like to see how he's protecting me now.

"Guess I haven't been paying attention." He rubs the back of his head. I spot a flash of a wedding ring. Didn't Garmadon abandon Chen for a girl? What was her name? Minny? Meshell? Mary? No, Misako.

"Love can distract easily," I smirk as my mind brings up James for some reason.

"Yeah," He smirks. He's waiting for something. Is this a trap? "There's no need to be so tense."

"You try being sent to kill someone, then trying to figure out how not to." I roll my eyes.

The door to a truck stop open behind us, two tough looking guys watch us. Then Garmadon throws a punch at me.

His knuckles collide with my right cheek. I stumble back while holding my face, "What was that for?!"

Garmadon gets up as eyes are set on us. His eyes are still green. What is up with him? "Repeating my mistake." He says rather loudly and towards the crowd instead of me. Then he's taken over in a black and purple tornado that sweeps me up, "We're really not fighting by the way."

"Then why'd you hit me." I'm vaguely aware of more hits against me.

"Listen, if Chen believes in power, then he'll only want the best of the best. That means that if you look weak he might brush you off."

That's actually really smart. "That might work. How far will this have to go?"

"Somewhere between patty cake and injury." He stops spinning as I slam into a wall.

That's kinda broad. I hold my ground, I have to make this look believable as more truckers come out to watch. "Imitation is the highest form of flattery you know," I smirk and charge in with a back kick.

"Sorry. I'm taken." Garmadon play catches it and twists me into the fountain water.

Ow! Even if this is fake, that's gonna bruise. I try to get up but he pushes my head so it looks like it's deeper but I can still breathe.

Garmadon's reflection shows a wavy smirk as people run and hide, "I knew it. I was the best. Chen could do no better than me." He cackles.

Hmm, he's a little too good at this. I pretend to flounder around but he pushes more.

"If Chen thinks that this is a worthy opponent then he will have to try harder." He pulls me up. I take a deep gasp of air as he let my neck go, "Much harder."

The truckers whisper to each other, some head to their trucks others jump on their radio. It worked. That lame play fight actually worked. I pretend to cough like I was drowning as Garmadon rants a little.

The blonde guy grabs him by the ear, "Brother, what do you think you're doing?!" Wu is practically having steam coming out of his ears.

Garmadon grunts and brushes him off, "Isn't obvious? I'm fighting."

"Not that way. That's not how father taught us!" Wu's red as I get up. I pick up the gun, can't let this baby get back to Chen. I really hope that this works. "What were you thinking?!"

I smile as Wu pulls his older brother by the sleeve of his shirt. Garmadon twists over and holds his finger up to his mouth.

I think my fate was just changed.

{Location: Crystal Pass' mining operation}(Seliel's POV)[Present day]

It's never been this dark. Marci and I cut the power down here and the snakes are in total panic mode. Apparently, this breed doesn't have night vision. And so far our plan is working. We take out two. Move on. Take out two more. It's rather easy as they have left their shovels.

Marci leans up against the wall, pulls off her mask for a second, "I wish I could log this as an exercise in P.E."

"Don't I know it." I pull out a small flashlight and look around. "We're on track." I point the light to the rock. Or rather, medal. All around us is a bronze medal, it's very reflective but feels unnatural. Maybe it's man made? "Have you ever seen this kind of medal before?"

Marci shakes her head, "Nope. I'm better versed in rocks." She tries to pull off a small piece of it. It doesn't move for her. She frowns then points towards where we stacked the snakes. "Check that out."

I shine the light to where she's pointing. Something is ingrained in here. A nail? A carpenter nail? What in Ninjago is that doing in a cave, "I wonder what this is for?"

Marci gets low and pulls out a clipboard from under one of the snakes' butts, "Seliel, you're gonna want to see this."

I grab the clipboard and bite the flashlight between my teeth. 'Property of Dawn. S. Quartzstone. Note: Experiment #19. Name: Frightstone. Purpose: To hurt or harm some creature called a Fay. Works: Yet to be determined. No test subject available.'

Now I'm confused. In the tapes, Mom just got off the island. Why would she try making a medal that could hurt whatever a Fay is? And what the heck is a Fay? The more answers about my mom, I get more questions. My lips twitch, "We'll have to look later. We've got snake butt to kick."

"Do snakes even have butts?" Marci plays with a red pen that breaks and splatters on the floor.

"I suppose we'll have to kick what ever passes for a snake's butt." She pulls up her half mask onto her nose.

Then the door into the cave opens an inch, green eyes and light blonde hair prance their way to us. Victor. What's a slime like him doing here? "I believe that would be a tail."

I make sure my voice changer is on even though he might know my identity, "What are you doing here Mr." I roll my hand like I don't know his name.

"Just call me Victor. Mr. is my dad's name." Victor smirks. In one hand, he's got a baseball bat with nails sticking out of the sides. And some of the nails are bent in a strange way. "And I figured that the Phantom Ninja could use all the help he can get."

His face says he knows otherwise but I don't quite care why he's here as long as he can help for now. I fold my arms, "I don't know. These snakes are hard to fight much less defeat. Are you sure you can handle it?"

Victor looks like I just insulted his manhood, "Of course. Do I look hurt?" He points at his undamaged body.

"Fine. You can go first then." I wave him goodbye. He turns red but starts sneaking around corners.

Marci taps my shoulder, "May I remind you, he's trying to spy on you. For his gang. That wants to kill you!"

"I know. But that has to take the back burner now. We need all hands all deck. We can't have another..you know."

"And if those hands that help us are dirty, what does that make us?" Marci folds her arms as we tiptoe to the next air vent.

I'm puzzled. She's got a point. I trust Victor as far as I can throw him. But if he's willing to fight snakes, justice can take hold later...right? "It makes us survivors."

"I thought we were heroes."

I sigh. Marci, let it go so we can fight snakes, "All that I want is to keep Crystal Pass safe. And if anyone's game, then I'll take them."

Marci grumbles under her breath as we turn the corner and follow Victor into the wide air vent.
