Chapter Twelve (Editing)
Tokunbo.
She peered into the room through the window. The lights were bright white, the smell of disinfectant permeated the air. A shudder rippled through her in disgust.
Hospitals. How I hate them.
Enoch lay on the bed, a bruise on his left cheek, his left arm was in a cast, but all in all, he looked fine. Tokunbo couldn't hear what he was saying to Betty and Vicky, but with the smiles on all their faces, she'd bet it was some lame joke. She gripped the window sill tighter as the urge to go in became stronger. But she couldn't. Not with her Father's warning ringing in her ears.
"Are you involved in this.... Coincidence or not, I will not move the whole family because of you again!... Keep clear of those people Tokunbo. Keep! Clear!"
She shouldn't be there. But she couldn't help it. Enoch was hurt and even though they hadn't known each other for more than two months or so, she felt attached. They had both found out Elijah's secret together.
A lump clogged her throat as she recalled Elijah's words. For three days, the idiot had vanished into thin air. Tokunbo had heard his father screaming at Betty the previous evening to produce her brother or else. The lump dissolved into a sigh. She knew it must've hurt Betty. Getting roped for other people's actions was never pleasing. She would know.
Enoch threw his head back in laughter and then winced in pain. Vicky smacked his arm, helping him adjust against the wall. Betty grabbed one of food warmers on the cabinet beside his bed, her mouth moving endlessly.
He's fine. But you won't be if you keep staying here.
Her conscience warned. She had skipped her last class to get here. If her Father ever got a whiff of it-
"And how's the boy?"
Tokunbo froze at the very familiar voice that travelled through her bones and rattled them.
"He's recovering well enough. I'm sure you can ask him some questions now sir." Another voice replied.
She turned slightly to take in the scene. Her father stood with a doctor in front of the door way, just a few meters from her. She had to get out of there. If her Father recognized the school uniform, he'd suspect her immediately. Her knees wobbled in shock, her nerves jittery. A group of nurses passed by and without thinking, she jumped in between them ignoring their squeals of fright and dashed towards the exit door.
Her heart hammered in her chest. What if he had seen her? What if he was running after her right now? New found energy sizzled through her at the prospect of getting caught. She hadn't been flogged in a while and she wanted it to remain that way.
Then you should've listened to him.
I should've. I shouldn't have come-
Tokunbo screamed as she hit a hard object with so much impact and crumpled to the floor in agony. For a fraction of a second, she feared her father had caught up with her until she heard,
"Real smooth Skinnine. Reeeeal smooth."
She groaned, rolling on her back to look up at the fool who had everyone worried for days.
"Wh... Where..." She wheezed.
"Will you calm down before you choke on air or something." He hissed grabbing her arms to pull her up. "Mahn, you can't weigh more than three-"
"Biology textbooks?" She spat brushing of the sand grains on her arms and clothes.
"Yeah maybe. Whatever." She looked up to see Elijah looking a the now far away hospital building. Then realization dawned on her. "You're here to finish the job right?"
He had the gall to stare at her confused.
"Enoch. You're here to finish him off."
"I would never-"
" Spare me the lies! I thought you were some confused kid, you know. Like you just wanted to try things you hadn't done before and it landed you in deep problems. But you're just as bad as all of them!"
"Skinnine, stop."
"Stop? I'd bet Enoch begged too. I'd bet he begged and begged and hoped that his best friend of maaany years, would see the monster he was becoming and turn around. But he was proved wrong-"
"Tokunbo-"
"...You're an evil,-"
"Please stop,-"
"...No good traitor!" She screamed and watched in horror as Elijah fell to his knees.
"Please stop. Please...I'm sorry. I won't do it... I won't do it. I'm sorry! I'm sorry please!"
Tokunbo gasped as she recognized those pathetic whimpers. She had been a victim herself.
Elijah had been bullied.
