Chapter Thirty Three

                Tokunbo.

Papa will have a heart attack if he sees me like this.

She stared at the girl in the small round mirror, in shock and horror. She had more flesh than usual. Her face caked up in heavy layers of make up, it was hard to know what she had looked like before. Her lips sported a flashing red color and her eyes looked like cute baby chicks with the eyeliner around them.

"I think I just transported into an alternate dimension." She whispered placing a hand on her face as she looked down at her dress. A long sleeved, short red thing that made her wonder how she was supposed to abscond if anything bad happened. "At least I get to keep my shoes."

"If you're done talking to yourself, we need to move." Vicky grumbled as she pushed their uniforms into a box and hid it in a corner in the basement. She wore a navy blue sleeveless gown herself and was beautified beyond recognition.

"We look like night walkers!" Tokunbo protested glaring at the latter who rolled her eyes in response.

"How is this supposed to work if you can't say the word 'prostitute'?"

She winced at Vicky's words. "Couldn't we have dressed like a,...a plumber or something?"

Vicky held up two tennis balls. "Yeah sure. If you can get two plumber outfits in fifteen hours. Put these in."

She took a step back. "In where?"

"Your chest dummy. It's as flat as cardboard."

Tokunbo groaned, throwing her head back. "I hate you right now."

Vicky shrugged as she handed over the balls. "I don't exactly like you much either. Now let's go. This is the perfect time to get to that house."

Abosede street was quite busy by the time they arrived. The hot afternoon sun blazed crazily against the skin of screaming vendors. Vehicles struggled to pass by each other on the narrow road while mothers yell at their kids to be careful as they played.

Chaos. That was the word that came to mind as Tokunbo took in the scenery.

"The houses are numbered from the beginning of the street..." Vicky babbled as they trudged the dusty road. "...Demi's house is the 49th. Are you even listening?!"

She flinched at the girl's loud voice. "Yes I am."

Vicky narrowed her eyes. "No. No you weren't."

"Fish balls. Does it matter? Now please let's walk faster." She gestured to an alcohol shack not far from them. "Those boys in that beer shop are making my skin crawl. It's twelve in the afternoon! Who drinks at twelve in the afternoon?"

This seemed to amuse Vicky.   "If only they knew those were tennis balls. Mahn, boys are easy." She laughed.

They walked quietly then until a grey painted bungalow with the numbers '49' caught their eye.

                        "We're here." Vicky breathed.

"Great. My face was starting to melt with all this makeup."

Vicky chuckled darkly. "It's definitely melted. According to Eli, no one's supposed to be home and a spare key's under a plant. Demi's room is on the left."

Tokunbo nodded then pointed to a tall building on the left of the bungalow. "That means that's where Eli stays? It doesn't look so stable to me."

Vicky tugged at her arm. "It'll do the job. Now here's the plan. I'll  cause a scene so no one sees you while you take the key. Get inside and open Demi's window, okay?"

                      Holy smokes.

She swallowed.  "What do you mean cause a scene?"

"How about I worry about that and you worry about the damn key." Vicky grinded and nudged her forward.

With a heavy heart and wobbly knees, she made her way to the back of the building. Behind her, a loud pitched scream echoed.

Wow, I didn't know she had it in her .

As soon as she was certain everyone had gone to watch Vicky's drama, she ran to the backyard, tilted the aloevera plant, snatched up the key.

"I can't believe they wrote 'back door' on the key." She guffawed as she marched to the door and slipped in.

The house smelt flowery and had a basic decor. She stalked towards the left bedroom, ignoring the rest of the house in general. A black and white 'keep out'  sign hung on the black door and with a nonchalant shrug, she opened the door and stepped in.

"Wow." The word slipped past her lips unhibited. Unlike the rest of the house, Demi's room was magnificent. A unique blend of grey, white and black. The white sheets on the bed contrasted it's black frame and looked so soft, Tokunbo resisted throwing herself on it. The walls were grey with sparse yet huge black polka dots. The carpet and drapes had spiral patterns of white, maroon and pink and the smell of coconut prevailed in the air.

"Not bad." She whispered and turned around. On a section of the wall opposite the bed were pictures. Pictures of the same woman in different sizes and poses. She moved nearer to have a closer look but stopped when a sudden crash startled her.

Right at the window she was supposed to open, a figure in a black hoodie with the physique of a male stood holding something in his fist. The silver head of a flash drive winked at her. A broken vase laid on the carpet not far from his feet.

"The flash drive." She gasped. "Who are you?" And before her very eyes, the man heaved himself out, through the window.

"Get off me, you big oaf!" She heard Vicky yell.

With wide eyes and her heart in her throat, she ran to the window and watched the man lift himself off Vicky and abscond.

"He's with the flashdrive!" She shouted, pointing at his retreating figure.

The dark haired girl stared at her in confusion. "What are you saying?"

She let out a growl of frustration. "I came into the room. I... I heard a crash and saw him at the window, holding a flash drive! He ran away before I could do anything. He must've collided with you while doing that."

She took a step back in fear when Vicky moved closer to the window, her face all grey like she had swallowed a pin.

"Stephanie?" Vicky whispered breathily, eyes fixed on the wall behind her.

Tokunbo glanced at the wall then at Vicky, realization dawned on her.   "The same Stephanie? The Stephanie that interrupted our conference call yesterday? Why does Demi have a shrine dedicated to her?"

"It's none of your business kid."

Tokunbo shook her head. "No way. We will not leave this place until you spill the beans Victoria." She declared with folded arms.

           The day has just begun.

*****"
