I'm Laney.
The schools 'outcast'. I'm not going to make this like some coming of age high school movie. Those suck balls. Well I mean I guess I am quiet? And kind of nerdy. I have straight A's.
There's this girl, Jay, she "bullies" me. If that's the proper word for it. This girl taunts me in the hallway. I'm transgender but apparently she supports that. Well this girl really shoved me today and started making fun of me. A guy misgendered me on purpose and she beat him up. Maybe she isn't horrible. No she sucks. She isn't super nice besides that.
Well here I am now sitting in class.
The teacher never stops talking.
"You are going to partnered with someone the opposite gender of you." She says.
Great. I'm gonna be with a boy.
"I have a list. First is Leo and Myra."
She keeps blabbering until I hear my name.
"Jay and Landon."
I'm about to beat this motherfucker up.
"Sorry what?" I ask.
"Jay and Landon." She repeats herself.
"Would you like to try again?"
"JAY AND LANDON! Did you hear me this time?"
"It's LANEY."
"No actually it isn't, your birth name is Landon so it stays Landon."
"Miss, have you heard of transgender?" I snap at her.
"Yes but it isn't real."
"Let me guess your next words are going to be 'being gay is wrong, transgenders are fake'? Do I have to whack some sense into you?"
I hear a snicker from the back of the class "little miss perfect standing up for herself? Unbelievable."
Another voice, Jay "shut up Ryan."
"Young lady you can take that attitude to detention." The teacher says.
"Actually, if she's going to detention I'm going with her because your spewing straight bull shit." Jay says.
What just happened?
"You may join her if you'd like."
Jay flipped her off.
"OFFICE." The teacher yelled.
"Anywhere but here!"
"Your going too." She glared at me.
"Go fuck a tree." I said as flipping her off.
I stormed out. In the hall was Jay waiting for me.
"Little miss perfect finally had the courage to stand up for herself." Jay says.
"Shut up bitch."
"I could beat you up right here you know." Jay says pinning me up against the wall.
"Do it then."
She poked her finger into my throat. "Do not try to mess with me I've sent people to the hospital if they so much as say one thing I don't like."
"Okay feisty." I said pushing away from her.
"Office we go?" I ask.
"Yeah but I know the lady who watches the people in detention she's super sweet she can get up out of detention."
"Okay." I nod.
We walked down the hallway. This girl standing next to me was only here because she stood up for me.
"You know you didn't have to do that."
"Do what."
"Stand up for me." I say.
"Fuck that teacher she's as dumb as a box of rocks."
I've never have been to the office before. I was sort of nervous.
"Is little baby Laney scared? Does she need me to hold her hand?" Jay says in a voice I only hear used on babies and dogs.
"Shut up."
We walk in. Jay was definitely lesbian. She has long brown hair but it's pulled into a bun right now revealing an undercut.
She wears striped button shirts and ripped jeans. Definitely gay. She also doesn't wear makeup but that has nothing to do with it.
"Yo Mrs. Genith, how ya doing?" Jay asks the lady in the room labeled 'Detention'."
"Oh hi Jay, what are you doing here?"
"Teacher was being an ass- I mean she was being transphobic and homophobic to miss Laney here and so she had the guts to stand up for herself; she got sent to detention. I flipped off this lady and also got sent to detention and Laney told her to fuck a tree."
"I'm sending you back to class."
"But we aren't completely innocent..." I say.
"No but what you did was amazing, go."
I look at Jay, she shrugs and we walk back to class.
"That was weird"
"Tell me about it." Jay scoffed.
I make eye contact with her for a quarter of a second. I feel butterflies.
Holy shit.
