The thought of gagging crawled up my tough as a threw in spoonful of peas into my mouth. I could taste the taste of nothingness in my mouth, and it made me want to puke. I knew I had to eat quickly, though, the Halloween party started at five thirty, and we had to leave in ten minutes.
"Hurry up and eat your food, Emily." My brother, Alex, said. I wanted to shoo him off, but I knew he was right, I had to hurry up and eat if I wanted a shot at winning the costume contest.
Not like I would, though. My costume was horrible. It was freaking Joy from that Pixar movie Inside out. I like my costume, don't get me wrong, but the judges would just laugh at it.
I tried to get my friends Mary and Harley to dress up as Sadness and Disgust, but they refused. I guess they think I'm childish, and I can't blame them, I was like the only one at the Halloween dance this year that wasn't dressed head to toe in black or white.
I finally finished my last bite of peas and jumped off of the table. I knew I'd have to hurry to meet my friends at the party.
I ran into my room and grabbed my yellow dress and blue wig, ran into the bathroom and put them on. The wig wasn't to hard to put on over my bob-cut hair, but the dress was a little to big. It was either big, or was a v-neck, which I hate. Like, really, who would want to know that their bra was showing the whole entire time? Not me, but hey, I've never cared about personal privacy, so why start now?
After my costume was on, I ran like Sonic to get my shoes and trick-or-treat bag. I don't know why I get my trick-or-treat bag anymore- I'm too old for this stuff. Besides, I'm one giving out the candy, not getting it. Though sometimes there'll be extra, but then I have to share it with Alex.
"Ready!" I shouted to my mom, who was upstairs in the bathroom. Before she got a chance to respond, I ran down to garage and hopped in the car. A few minutes later, she and my sister, Kate, came out of the house into the garage.
As my mom buckled my little sister in, she said "Wow, I love how you keep forgetting you can sit in the front seat."
That's right! I've always been very short for a fourteen year old, but I was recently measured and I can sit in the front seat! Must've had a growth spurt, I went from 4 foot 7 to 4 foot 9 in like 2 weeks! That doesn't sound that fast to me, but I guess my mom thinks it's fast, and she's usually right.
I got out of my back seat, where I usually sit on the ride to school because Alex is older and taller than me, and ran up into the front. But today he was letting me sit in the front!
In the front seat, everything seems to be going faster. It looks a movie, when they have those short first person flashbacks or something, and the car or whatever is going a full 109 miles per hour. I wish we were going that fast, we'd be here in less then a second. Actually, that's probably not right, but it's Saturday, no one wants to do that math.
A few minutes later we arrived outside of the party. It was being held by my "friend" Alice at a public park. There was concession stands almost everywhere, and not to mention the line of people with their trunks decorated Halloween-y. My mom parked her car along them, and we got out.
"You two have fun with the van!" She said as we got out. She handed Alex a box of Halloween decorations we could use to decorate.
I was so excited, this was the first year that me and my brother were doing this. Our first year decorating the van and giving out children to the candy, actually, wait, no, it's the other way around - we're giving candy to the children.
"Hey Em!" I heard someone call as soon as I started stringing webs from the corners of the trunk. I turned around and saw Mary. She looked ironic. Her silky blond hair was tied into two even pigtails on the sides of her head. She was wearing a pink and blue tutu of some sort, but I don't know if it was a tutu or not, for the skirt was less puffy.
"Hi!" I replied happily, "I'm Joy, as you know. What are you?"
Mary flipped her hair and replied, "I am none other than Ms. Mary 6 year old! Don't laugh, okay. It's the best I could do. They don't sell Batgirl in size 16."
I laughed and said, "Don't worry, I barely put any work into this." I indicated my outfit slash costume thingy, "Besides, you don't look half bad."
"Do I look three quarters bad?" Mary said.
I rolled my eyes and responded, "It's great, Mary."
I was about to resume my work on the spider webs when Mary's phone vibrated. I was surprised I could hear it, it sounded like she put vibration on max.
"Oh god." She said, "Jameson wanted to meet me at the playground half an hour ago." She said, sorta to herself and sorta to me. "Sorry, Em." She said, turning her head so I knew she was talking to me. I nodded at her before she ran in the direction of the playground.
I loved my friends, but sometimes it seems they're more about their boys than their besties. Well, that's probably just the selfish thoughts of me. Whatever.
I turned back to the van that was half done because of Alex, and resumed the spider webs, wishing Mary could be helping me.
