Chapter Five

Mey-Rin was not kidding when she said that we were starting at 7:00. It couldn't be more than five after 7:00, and she was already pounding at my door.

"(Y/N), are you awake?" she called from the other side of the door. "We are already late."

I was still tying the back of my maid outfit when I opened the door for her. I wasn't quite used to such an outfit. There was so many ties and buttons compared to the rags that I usually wear.

"This will never do. We need to get started right away," she lectured me.

"I'm sorry, I am not used to putting on such a complicated outfit...I'll be on time tomorrow," I apologized.

Her look of disapproval quickly faded to a soft smile. "I understand. It is all much different."

"Were you a commoner too?" I asked.

She looked to the ground. "Not exactly...but that is not important. I know you are probably feeling rather out of place...there is no need to worry, though. The Young Master is not cruel. As long as you can offer him a service, then you'll be alright."

Her words did comfort me a little, but I still didn't know what my purpose was here. Maybe Ciel was just a charitable man.

"Okay, let's get started. The first thing I start with is cleaning the Fourier, usually when I am done with that, the Young Master is out of his room by then so we will go up there next," Mey-Rin explained.

"Wait, so you clean the whole manor by yourself?" I questioned, looking around the large estate.

"Bard takes care of the kitchen, but I must admit, you're help is going to make my life a lot easier," Mey-Rin let out a nervous laugh.

I gave her a small smile, realizing that this might not be such a bad thing. Everyone, for the most part, seemed rather friendly and welcoming. It wasn't something that I was used to.

Mey-Rin and I started at the Fourier, dusting and sweeping. Once it was all clean, Mey-Rin sent me to the garden to get fresh flowers for the vases. After making my way out there, I ran into Finnian, who still looked at me with disgust.

"Hi...I'm here to get flowers for the vases in the Fourier," I said to him.

"Mey-Rin sent you?" he questioned.

I nodded.

Finnian didn't speak again. He simple when to the rose bushes and delicately picked off them ones that he felt suitable. It didn't take him long before he handed me three fresh bouquets, still avoiding my eye contact.

"Um, thank you," I said, hoping to get more of a conversation out of her.

He simply nodded back to me.

Feeling defeated with the boy, I went back into the house to place the bouquets in the Fourier. I just didn't understand his problem with me. Neither Mey-Rin or Bard were as hostile. Hell, Ciel was more hospitable to me than this boy was being.

I didn't want to give it more thought, knowing everything that I needed to get done to make an impression on my first day. So I thanked him for the bouquets and made my way back into the manor.
