06.21 - Rivera Lukas
Maxie's provocation set forward a chain of event. Blaze Jager found himself going to the same university as Lukas Rivera and Dustin Jager. What's more, no one expected the young masters of the Rivera and Jager families to gather at the same university. At first, after learning the wager Maxie had set, Blaze was shocked, then anxious, and finally resigned. Sensing that his cousin was the sort to do whatever she wanted regardless of the consequences, Blaze figured it was useless for him to worry and so continued about his own life. On the other hand, Lukas Rivera and Dustin Jager both set out to win against Maxie and her game - each young man for their own reason.
After being prep by his father, Dustin Jager eager entered the competition in order to win Maxie's 15% share of Jager Corp. Growing up going to the same school as his cousin, Dustin was completely confident in winning over Blaze. While it was important to create a wide circle of networking, grades were also important. Dustin's networking skills was topnotch but he was lazy in his studies and depends a lot on his family name to intimidate his peers. He had thought the university professors would be the same as his past teachers and would grade him based on his name. Little did he know, college was different than primary and high schools. Many university professors could care less to learn a student's name. Dustin Jager overestimated his value and ignored the fact that if he does not do well in grades, he would lose. And if he loses, he'll never be able to enter Jager Corporation even as a mail delivery boy. That harsh truth was not realized until halfway through the university years, but by then, it was already too late for him to back out.
As for the second male lead - Lukas Rivera, the young man breezed through university - naturally earning many students' admiration and professors' respect. The man was, after all, very intelligent and capable individual without the need of family's backing. Even though many people always gather around him, hoping to garter some connection with him, the aloof young man always kept to himself without a care to socialize with anyone. Only a few individuals were able to get within the cold, quiet man's small circle of acquaintances. And strangely enough, despite his previous fall out with Blaze Jager, the two characters managed to fall into the same social circle. Even though, the protagonist no longer naively thinks that the second male lead as a friend - the two men at least acknowledged each other existence.
"Oi, Blaze, isn't that your sister?"
In the university's largest dining hall, a gorgeous group of 4 young men and 3 young women sat at a large round table for lunch. Blaze Jager was eating when a familiar voice was heard on the speakers throughout the dining hall. Lifting his head, Blaze looked at the large flat screen to see what appears to be an interview with Maxie Luther.Everyone recognized the beautiful interviewer as the head host of KT International - the world's leading source for news and analysis on Business and Marketing. Not many people recognized the woman with the strawberry mark and so were startled when the beautiful host introduced her as the CEO of Jager Corp. After listing all of Maxie Luther's accomplishment since she took the position of CEO, the host begin her series of questions. Everyone watched with amazement as the young 27 years old woman wearing royal blue button up blouse tucked inside slim black pants, answered each questions- from the stock markets to Jager Corp's future venture, in a casual and relaxed manner. There wasn't the slight hesitation or apprehension in the woman's face or in her tone. Every time she replied, her answers were clear and sharp.
"Wow, your foresight is amazing Maxie" The host smiled at Maxie with admiration. "It's no wonder Jager Corp. is listed as the current number one in commerce and trade"
"You give me too much credit Kristen" Maxie returned the smile. "Jager Corp had been number one in the business long before I took the position"
"Well yes but it's no easy feat to maintain the number 1 position. I bet there must be pressure on you at the start of your career"
"Oh? What make you think so?" Maxie grinned.
"Am I wrong?" The host's arc one of her brow in a challenge. "Let's ignore the fact that you're Jager Corp's first female CEO, but you're also the youngest"
"Actually, I'm not" Maxie laughed.
"You're not?" The host was confused.
"Cain Jager was 19 when he served as CEO" Maxie smiled with amusement.
"That doesn't count" Host huffed to hide her embarrassment. "Mr. Cain Jager founded Jager's Trade and Commerce when he was 19. It wasn't until he was 24 years old that the company became Jager Corp. And he did not officially take the role as CEO until he was 35."
"Technicality" Maxie teased the host.
"The point is" The host continued. "It not normal for anyone to be in your position and be able to handle the pressure"
Maxie just smile while the host continued on with her round of questions. As the interview continued on, Blaze watched with amusement at his cousin usual nonchalant manner.
"Your sister is amazing..."
At the sound of the soft, gentle voice, Blaze turned to give a warm smile toward the beautiful girl beside him. The story own very female lead, Sophia Solis returned the warm smile as she leaned to Blaze's side and wrapped her hands around his arm. Blaze was in a good mood up until a familiar voice insulted Maxie. In the large dining hall, Dustin Jager was with his group of friends while he commented on Maxie Luther's ugly appearance in comparison to his super model sister, Ruby Jager. Only tables away, Dustin had purposely spoke out loudly to provoke Blaze. Even though Blaze Jager rarely sees Maxie in the last few years, he spoke to her often on the phone. Once or twice a week, Maxie would call to tease or make fun of him, but Blaze still felt move, believing that it was Maxie's ways to check up on him. And before he knew it, Blaze accepted Maxie truly as his sister and family. And to hear anyone insult his sister, Blaze Jager naturally would not stand it. Standing up, Blaze glared at Dustin.
"What?" Dustin glared back. "You have something to say?"
Blaze would have left his seat if not for the female lead's hold of his arm.
"Personal question Maxie, I hope you don't mind me asking." The host sudden question stopped Blaze. "The birthmark on your face, why not remove it?"
The question had been very personal and irrelevant that everyone was surprised the Business Host would ask it. While people expect Maxie to be shock or upset by the inappropriate question, the woman smiled instead.
"What's wrong with my birthmark?" Maxie asked with amusement.
Maxie's own question startled the host. What's wrong with the birthmark?
"Well..." All of the sudden, the host didn't know how to continue with the question. "The location is..."
The host didn't need to finish for anyone to understand her meaning. Many people also thought the location was wrong.
"Do you know the process of removing hemangioma birthmark?" Maxie continued to ask.
The host didn't know so did not replied.
"In light cases, laser treatments can remove the mark. In cases like mine, I have to go through surgery and possible skin grafting." Maxie answered with her usual carefree smiles.
"So why not remove it?" The host wasn't the only one who was curious.
"Why should I go through such pain to remove it?" Maxie smirked.
Speechless - the host did not know how to respond.
"You don't mind it?" The host asked with disbelief.
For a woman to have a mark on her face, wouldn't she feel grief? The truth of the matter was, the old Maxie Luther had not only felt grief, but she was tormented by it. But the soul within Maxie was different. Although the current Maxie have a preference for beauty, she cared more about herself. If it was too much trouble for her to remove the birthmark, she rather lives with it. If beauty was too troublesome, she would rather be ugly. Whatever brings her the most benefit, the soul within Maxie would choose that route.
"Surely with such position, you must care about the public opinion"
In other words, Maxie Luther's status in society and CEO position as one of the world's most powerful company, the public will judge her move and action - even her appearance will be judged.
"Why would I care about that?" Maxie laughed. "My job doesn't require me to be a supermodel. I run the company with my brain not my face"
The host felt a whole new level of respect for the woman sitting beside her.In the world where outward beauty is important, sometime people fail to recognize inner beauty.
"Besides, the only opinion I care about is from my little brother"
"Little brother?" The host was startled at the mention of Maxie Luther's brother.
From her sources, Maxie Luther was an only child who was raised by her grandmother. She didn't have any siblings, just cousins and half-cousins.
"Blaze" Maxie's eyes suddenly went to the video camera, speaking directly to the public viewers. "You see anything wrong with my face?"
Still standing in the middle of his university dining hall, Blaze grinned as he looked at Maxie on the large television screen. Not only Blaze Jager was watching, the entire world was watching.
"No" Blaze answered even though Maxie could not hear him.
"Am I beautiful?" Maxie smiled confidently, flashing her set of deep dimples.
"Yeah" Blaze answered with a laugh.
The crowded dining hall was silent as they watched the tall, gorgeous Blaze Jager while he answered Maxie Luther's questions proudly.
"See, my little brother thinks I'm beautiful" Maxie turned to the host.
"How do you even know his answers?" The host asked wryly.
"He doesn't dare to answer differently" Maxie grinned. "He'll know I'll beat the crap out of him"
"What?" The host laughed at Maxie's playful manner. "That's unreasonable"
"It's my right as the older sister" Maxie smirked. "Don't pretend to me coy with me Kristen. I know your younger sister Erika. She tells me how you_"
"Stop" The host quickly pleaded with a red face. "I give up. I give up. Let me off this once Maxie"
Maxie's light laughter let the host know that the woman was letting her off easy. Feeling relieved, the host smiled. And while the interview continued on,Blaze sat back down forgetting all about Dustin's previous provoking.
"Your sister really is amazing" With astonishment, Sophie Solis continued to watch Maxie laughing and talking to the host."Do... Do you think she'll like me?"
Blaze chuckled as he patted Sophie's back to ease her nervousness. The male and female leads met a few months ago and just recently begun dating. Blaze had mentioned his new girlfriend to Maxie and had told her in advance that he'll be taking Sophie home to visit her during the upcoming summer break. The female lead was quickly falling in love with Blaze and so nervous to meet the man's family - especially Maxie whom Blaze respected the most.
"Lukas? Oi Lukas"
From the very start, Lukas Rivera was sitting quietly among the group with the slim white laptop before him. Like always, the handsome man had been focus on the series of numbers on the laptop screen until Maxie appeared on television. Normally the stoic, cold man would never lift his eyes from his laptop, but unconsciously, he gazed up at the screen at the sound of Maxie's voice. No one seems to notice the intensity of his gaze and before anyone could, Lukas Rivera already stood with his closed laptop under his arm.
"Where are you going Lukas?" One of the girls at the table asked with disappointment.
The indecipherable man did not bother to respond while he walked away leaving a trail of skipping and blushing hearts.
"Is it me or Lukas seem annoyed?" One of the girls asked the group.
Aside from the female lead who was focus with the male lead, the other girls at the table sighed out their disappointed at the handsome man departure.
"The noise probably disturb his focus is all" One of the guys commented.
The group nodded with agreement since they know Lukas Rivera had always preferred a quiet setting. On the other hand, Blaze felt differently. The protagonist grew up with the second male lead and so had better sense of the man's mood. And his intuition told him Lukas Rivera's sudden change in mood was due to Maxie's sudden appearance on television. What Blaze didn't understand was why?
