Chapter Ten (Stiles)

The highest you'll ever be is standing next to the one you hold closest

....

"You realize that you brought me to the school right?" I asked as he stopped in front of the red brick building.

He laughed and turned around to face me.

"You're just going to have to trust me on this one okay?"

I sighed and nodded at his excited face. If I was going to make friends here, then I was going to have to actually take risks and try meeting people.

"Alright Peter. Let's see what's so interesting about Midtown." He grabbed my hand and pulled me to a ladder on the back of the school before climbing up it himself.

He stopped halfway up, and looked down, expecting me to climb up behind him. I was too busy thinking about everything that could go wrong on that rusted ladder.

He must've not seen my deciding face, because he laughed and continued to wave me up anyways.

"Stiles I promise it's safe okay? Trust me. I do this all the time."

I was still standing back with my arms crossed, not moving an inch.

"How am I supposed to trust you? I barely know you. For all I know, you could be taking me up there to kill me."

He sighed and climbed back down the ladder.

"If you didn't think you could trust me, you wouldn't have followed me all the way to the school. Now come on, we're losing precious time."

He then ran back to the ladder and climbed all the way up, this time not looking back to see if I had followed him or not.

Guess I should go up there then?

Dear God. If I die up here, electrify my bat so that Scott won't touch it. Even in death it's mine and only mine.

Now that I got that done and over with I guess it's time to ascent the ladder to my impending doom.

The metal was cold against my fingers, as I moved to climb and grab each bar that lay ahead of the last, and after about 20 or 25 bars I finally made it to the top.

Peter was laying down on the roof, and I'm guessing I was supposed to join him, but no. Not yet.

"I can't believe you actually chose to come back to school willingly at night. You must be really brave."

The sarcasm was strong with that comment, and I meant for it to be that way.

"Just look up Stiles. Trust me it's worth every extra moment at school."

I did as he said to and looked up to see a sky full of stars.

My mouth had dropped halfway in shock, but it was actually more of an awe.

I can't remember the last time I saw this many stars.

"How.. it's... this definitely shouldn't be able to happen in New York."

It's true. You don't typically see stars like this in the city. It's too populated and polluted to even allow a glimpse at the luminescent sky at night.

"Yeah, well on some nights you can, and it actually happens more often than you might think."

He didn't even break eye contact with the sky to look at me when he spoke, but I was the only other person around so I know that he was talking to me.

"Just lay down and look up, trust me, it'll be one of the prettiest things you've ever seen."

Once again with the not breaking eye contact at all with the sky.

"Again with the trust thing Peter. But hey I'll take you up on it this time."

I pulled my phone out of my back pocket and set it on the ground before laying down myself a good three feet away from Peter.

He could still be a serial killer.

"You're right. The view's definitely better laying down here."

He didn't respond that time, but I could tell it was because he was just trying to enjoy the stars.

So the no talking thing was definitely going to be difficult for me seeing as how all I do is talk. I mean I could just do what I'm doing now and talk to myself, but it's not the same as talking to someone else, or talking to myself, but out loud instead of just in my head.

To keep my mind off the fact that I couldn't stop thinking about talking, I started to wring my fingers together in order to keep my spastic tendencies under control. There's no reason that this has to be ruined because I can't sit still and stop talking long enough for it to soak in.

.....

I was just about to calm down and pay attention when suddenly my phone went off.

I groaned and grabbed it, only to see another message from Levi waiting for me.

Out of pure curiosity I clicked on it and was immediately angry at the message I was reading.

Levi - Saw you leave with Parker. Nice enough guy, but be careful who you call your friends. One's decisions on friend groups can make or break one's social career

Levi - Just something to think about

My phone was back in my pocket just as fast as I had pulled it out.

Who was he to tell me that I shouldn't be friends with Peter.

Last time I checked, it was my choice on who I chose to be my friends in this school not his.

"Is everything okay?"

This time he was looking at me, and it was most likely because I had pulled out my phone.

"Yeah, everything's okay. It was just a drunk off his butt Scott wanting pizza with ice cream. Sorry for the interruption, It's put away now."

I pointed to my pocket to show him where it was, just in case he didn't know, but he just laughed and said that he knew where people put their phones.

Great. Now I have to make sure that he doesn't find out about that because he seems like a really nice guy, and I don't want him to find out that Levi's hinting that I shouldn't hang out with him.

This is just perfect.

Not even a week in Queens and I'm already caught in the middle of drama between Levi and Peter.

Could this get any worse?

It better not.
