THE STORY
pick a card

"

we need to leave," atlas had whispered to her, tugging at the strands of his hair. "we have to get out of here in order to succeed."

recalling the stress of her brother, waverly found it difficult to drag herself to their going away party. she couldn't bring herself to walk through that house, knowing what was leading them from the town that no one ever left. everything was perfect in cardend, and surely a descendent of the town founder should know that. but, no, atlas, waverly cardend's darling half brother, had other plans.

her phone was buzzing in her pocket, practically burning a hole through her jacket as she walked down the graveled street. she knew if she looked down, all she would see was her brother's name lighting up the screen. so, she ignored it. she ignored it and kept down the path.

she wasn't sure what led her there, but, walking into the town's most well known bar, she knew something was off and it wasn't that this was the last time she would enter the place.

"hey, what can i get you?" the guy behind the bar asked as the girl stopped at a wooden stool, grazing her fingers over the top of it.

she didn't reply, though. no matter how attractive the bartender was, her eyes were travelling towards the only other person in the bar. a man was hunched over at a table, shuffling a deck of cards in his hand.

"why is no one here?" waverly asked the bartender quietly, her eyes refusing to move from the hooded man. she couldn't even see his eyes under the black hood, only the dark stubble that lined his jaw.

"friday has been a surprisingly rocky night," he answered. "are you alright, miss cardend?"

jerking herself from her gaze, waverly nodded her head, flashing a charming smile at the bartender. "perfectly fine," she said, "it's just a big night, you know?"

"leaving town," he said, "i know."

come here, a voice whispered in the back of waverly's mind. when she brushed it away, it only sounded again, louder this time. come here, cardend girl, it said, the words laced with an acid foreign to the girl.

"last time we talked, i thought you said you didn't drink," the bartender added, grinning at waverly. but, before waverly could reply, her feet were leading her away from him and towards the other side of the room. her back was turned on the man and she was headed towards the card table, swiftly taking a seat across from the man shuffling the cards.

perfect, the voice said as the man laid the cards out in front of waverly.

now, it continued, pick a card.
