Chapter 5

I walked around in circles, anxiously waiting for Luke to come pick me up. I didn't know why I was so nervous; it was just a friend hanging out with another friend, right? I didn't need to be so worried.

I walked over to the freezer and grabbed an ice cube- one of my other bad habits. Eating ice was so bad for your teeth, but it helped ease my nerves. I calmed down for a minute or two, but all the nerves came back once I saw Luke pull into my driveway.

I took a breath before walking outside, looking at the ground as I approached his car.

"Hey Luke" I said getting into his car, trying to hide the uncertainty in my voice.

"Hey" he said with a smile before backing out.

"So what's the plan?" I asked; I always liked to know what the plan was. I liked knowing what was going on ahead of time.

"I was thinking about going to noodles and company, and then I want to show you something" he said, focusing on the road. He was wearing his ray bans again, which made me smile.

"After you" Luke said pulling open the door to the restaurant.

"Thank you" I smiled as I walked past Luke.

We walked up to the front register, Luke ordered first and then he turned to me.

"What do you want?"

"No I can pay for mine" I said with a smile, "thanks though"

"You can, but I got it Bailey"

Not wanting to keep people waiting, I ordered a small Mac and cheese.

"Thanks Luke" I said with a sigh.

"Don't worry, I asked you to hang out. Let me pay" he said with a smile.

I nodded and we sat down.

"So you're gonna show me something?" I asked, intrigued.

"Yeah if you don't mind taking a drive" he said, putting his drink up to his lips.

"I love drives" I said as our food came out. There weren't many people here so I figured the kitchen didn't have much to do.

Another thing I was nervous about- eating in front of people. I took small bites, trying not to be messy. When I was alone, I devoured food. I ate really fast, but I didn't like eating that way in front of people so I took small bites; usually when Luke wasn't looking at me. Being so nervous, I wasn't all that hungry. Once I was done, I looked around at the restaurant decorations.

"Ready?" he said, meeting my eyes once he was done.

"Yep" I said beginning to get out of my chair.

I held the door for him this time.

"Thanks" he smiled "but I think that's my job"

I laughed, "that's where you're wrong; doing kind things should be done both ways. The males shouldn't have to do everything" I said.

Don't get me wrong, I loved when anyone was kind. I especially loved when boys did things boys were 'suppose' to do, like hold doors and ask girls on dates but it was nice sometimes for it to go both ways.

"So how long is our drive?" I asked Luke while putting on my seatbelt.

"Probably a half an hour if you don't mind"

"Not at all" I said truthfully.

After Luke switched the radio station for what had to be the seventh time, he looked over at me and sighed.

"Hey will you do me a favor?" he asked.

"Sure"

"Go into the glove box and grab my USB cord" he motioned to the glove box while keeping both eyes on the road.

Once I grabbed the cord, he instructed me to plug it in. As I did so, he handed me his phone.

"Plug it into my phone and play whatever you want. Since you like All Time Low, I think you'll like the music I have on there but you're welcome to plug your phone in" he said with a smile. I liked how smiley he was. He had a really great smile and his happiness was contagious.

"Your phone should do fine" I said.

I really didn't want to plug mine in because yeah, I had some All Time Low and other stuff that Luke may like, but I didn't want the chance of me shuffling it and having the Jonas brothers come on.

"I need you to unlock your phone" I said facing his phone towards him.

"It's 1996" he said without hesitation.

I probably could have guessed that, usually people used dates as their lock codes so I wasn't shocked it was the year we were born. I was shocked how easily he gave me his passcode though. I mean, I guess I would have given him mine that easily too because there was nothing on my phone but a bunch of silly pictures, music, and some social media apps; but then again, most teenagers would still type in their passcode for the other person.

I scrolled through his artist list- All Time Low, Blink 182, Green Day, Mayday Parade, Yellowcard, etc.

"I like your choice in music, Hemmings" I said, just clicking the shuffle button.

"Thanks" he said glowing.

I miss you by blink 182 came on, "I can play this song on guitar" he said beaming.

"That's really cool" I said, since it was one of my favorites by Blink.

Throughout our drive, Luke would bang his steering wheel during certain parts of a song sounding like he was a drummer.

"Drummer too?" I asked laughing.

"Nah, I have this habit of tapping my foot to the beat but I'm driving so I have to do something about it, but you should hear Ashton play drums, he's really good"

"Start a band" I said half as a joke.

"We could technically, Ashton drums, my friend Michael guitar, our friend Calum on the bass, and I mean I'll sing and play guitar. BUT we would suck" he said laughing.

"I feel like that would be one interesting band" I said laughing along with him.

"Yeah we wouldn't get anywhere" he said shaking his head.

I looked around us, we were driving through what seemed to be a forest. There were trees everywhere and lots of windy roads. I noticed we were coming up on a "Speed Limit 50 MPH" sign.

I noticed Luke pick up the speed. I rolled down my window a little more enjoying the fresh air, and Luke did the same.

"This is really pretty" I said looking around, I loved drives like this, "but totally could be a place for a murder to occur" I said trying to sound serious.

Luke just gave me a smirk "that could be my plan" he said trying not to laugh.

"Shut up" I said shaking my head at him laughing. Not much longer we finally pulled up to what looked like a tiny beach. There was a lake, sand obviously, boats and a pier.

"This is awesome" I said to Luke as he parked.

"Yeah it's really relaxing" he said.

"How did you find out about this place?" I asked as we walked out onto the pier admiring the view.

I mean it wasn't far from where we lived, but you had to drive through a half an hour of nothing but trees and small back roads to get here.

"Well, when my family and I first moved here from Australia a couple of years ago, my mom and I just drove around. We didn't come all the way back here because it was far, but we drove through the area for a little while. One day I just wanted to see where I would go if I followed the straight road all the way back, and this is where it lead me" he said taking a seat on the edge of the pier and looking at me.

"It's real peaceful" I said looking at my surroundings.

"Yeah, like when the city gets to be too much, or too bright, or too loud this is a nice place to relax" he said looking around as well. Living near Washington DC; America's capital, got difficult sometimes. There were so many regulations, so many lights, so much traffic, and tons of people.

"I haven't exactly experienced it, but I bet the stars shine really bright out here since there's barely any light and tons of trees" he continued.

"I've never seen the stars that well" I admitted, "I mean I've been to the mountains a few times when I was younger, but I don't remember it. Plus, we weren't that high on the mountain, so there was still plenty of light"

"Yeah I haven't really either, but I bet they would shine really bright out here" he said looking up at the sky that was now dim. I pulled out my phone to check the time; it was now slightly past 6pm.

"Why did you guys move here from Australia?" I asked, "I would never want to move that far from somewhere I grew up"

"My dad travels a lot, especially here in America. My mom thought it would be better if we were somewhat closer to him. Plus, she gets paid better here to teach then she did back home" he explained to me.

"Have you lived here all your life?" he asked, playing with his lip ring.

"Yeah, I've lived in the same house my entire life. I mean, my mom loves to travel, so we would spend every summer somewhere new. One year we bought a house in the mountains, right where the West Virginia border was. A few years later we spent the summer in Canada with a few of my mom's friends, and another year we spent it in Wisconsin, then Michigan. My parents divorced when I was almost 9 and now my sister is 26, and my brother is 29 so it's just my dad and I at home. We usually stick around here with the occasional trip to the beach" I said looking over at Luke who was already looking at me.

I looked into his light blue eyes and smiled. I discovered that I really loved Luke's eyes. I had brown eyes which I thought were the most boring in the world, but Luke's were so blue and breath-taking. Blue eyes had always been my favorite.

I felt my phone vibrating in my pocket, of course the moment had to be ruined.

"Daddy" flashed on my screen.

"Sorry" I said to Luke with apologetic eyes. I didn't want to be rude but I didn't want to make my dad angry by ignoring his call. Luke nodded understandingly.

"Hey Dad" I answered, slightly annoyed.

"Hey where are you?" he asked, I could hear the worry in his voice. I was so nervous about going out with Luke, I forgot to leave my dad a note.

"I went to eat with Luke, Mrs. Hemmings' son. I'm sorry, I rushed out of the house before I remembered to leave you a note" I said sincerely, I didn't like making my dad worry. Since I was the youngest out of my siblings, he was extra protective over me.

"It's fine just don't come home too late, okay?" he asked.

"Okay Dad" I said before hanging up the phone.

"Sorry" I said to Luke.

"No worries" he said flashing me a smile, "Is everything okay though?"

"Oh yeah, I just forgot to tell my dad I left the house. He doesn't mind, I just usually tell him I'm leaving with someone" I said reassuring Luke. I didn't want him to think I had to be home immediately.

"That's cool; not having a strict dad."

"Yeah, I mean he trusts that I'm gonna do the right thing. He just believes if he was overprotective and too strict it would make me sneaky and go behind his back so he just trusts my judgment" I said smiling. I love that about my dad, it made me feel responsible and it was nice to have some freedom.

After Luke and I talked for about an hour, it got quiet. Not too long after the silence began, I could hear Luke quietly humming and I smiled to myself. If he sounded this good humming, I wonder what he sounded like when he was full on singing.

Luke pulled out his phone, scanning over the time.

"We should probably go" he said to me. I nodded as we stood up. He reached his hand out to help me up, and I took it. His hands were much bigger than mine, and his skin was so soft. He pulled me up, and I was quickly pulled to my feet. It felt like I was flying for two seconds.

"Woah" I said, after taking a second to balance myself on my two feet.
"Sorry, I didn't know you were that light" he exclaimed as we both started laughing.
"It's alright" I smiled as we made our way to the car.

We got into the car and did the same routine we did driving up here; I plugged in Luke's phone and turned up the volume. The windows were rolled down, the wind blowing through our hair.

Before I knew it, we were already in front of my house. Luke reached over and turned the volume down as I unbuckled my seatbelt.

"Thank you Luke" I said placing my hand on the door handle, "I had a lot of fun"

"I did too" he said smiling at me.
"Let me know when you get home safely" I said to him, getting out of the car.

"I will" he said laughing, before driving off.

Looking at the clock when I got into my room, I saw it was 9pm. I couldn't believe it was already that late. As I changed into my pajamas, I heard my phone vibrate.

*Home safely* It was from Luke.
*Good* I sent as I crawled into bed, grabbing my computer and typing in Netflix.
