Chapter 30

Today was my first check up since my surgery. I was extremely nervous as I walked into the hospital building. I followed my sister through the long halls and up to the doctors office.

I stayed quiet, hoping this visit would be quick and easy. I hadn't felt any worse since the surgery, but I did have my days where I didn't feel completely okay.

I pulled open the door to the office before walking over to the front desk. I signed my name on the clipboard before sitting next to my sister, nervously bouncing my leg up and down.

I looked around before pulling my phone out of my back pocket and opening my twitter app.

I looked up as I heard one of the doors in the office open.

"Bailey Parker," a nurse called. I looked at my sister as we both stood up and made our way to follow her.

She took my weight and height before leading me into a small room, telling me the doctor would be right in. I looked around feeling more nervous than before. I knew there wasn't much to worry about, but I just couldn't help the feeling in my stomach.

A few minutes later the door opened and I saw Dr. Chase walk into the room.

"Hey Bailey how are you?" he asked with a smile.

"Well," I said with a small smile myself.

"That's good. I'm gonna take you to get your MRI alright?" he said and I nodded. I stood up and followed him into the MRI room I had been in before. I took a breath as I walked into the room.

I laid down as the machine took images of my brain. The noise was louder than I remembered, and it dawned on me why I never wanted to do this again.

After a few minutes, I was able to exit the MRI and Dr. Chase led me back to the room and asked some follow up questions. He asked if any symptoms reoccured or if school was a struggle for me. I assured him I felt alright, just had an occasional headache here and there.

He reminded me to take things easy, and not overwhelm myself. He informed me that someone would call my family and tell them if anything was different on my MRI.

My sister and I thanked him as we walked out of the office.

Once I exited the building I let out a sigh of relief as I felt the cool air hit my cheeks. I got into my sisters car and relaxed in my seat.

"Told you there was nothing to worry about," she said with a soft smile.

"I know," I said as I let out another sigh of relief. I truly did know there wasn't much that could have gone wrong, but that didn't stop me from being nervous. I felt like anything could go wrong at this point.

Ever since my diagnosis, I had felt uneasy being around hospitals. Even if it meant just driving by them, that was probably what made me feel more worked up than I should have been.

Once I pulled open the door to my bedroom, I sat down and texted Luke I was home from my appointment.

*Can I come over?* his message read.

*Of course :)*

I smiled at the fact Luke was coming over. I wasn't upset or sad, but I just felt like I needed comfort and Luke was the best person to do that.

Soon I heard a knock at my front door. I made my way into the living room and opened the door seeing Luke standing in front of me.

"The door was open," I said with a small laugh. He knew where the spare key was anyways if the door was locked.

"I didn't want to just walk in if your family was here," he said closing the door behind him.

I nodded, "Dad's working and my sister just dropped me off," I said facing Luke.

He nodded and pulled me in for a hug and kissing the top of my head. It made me feel at ease.

I looked up at him, meeting his eyes. I stood on my toes and placed my lips lightly on his. I pulled back, "Hi," I said with a smile as I sat on the couch, Luke did the same.

"How was the appointment?" he asked as he put both of his arms on the top of the couch.

"Alright, they said I seem to be well but I'll get a call about my MRI scan in a few days," I said. I didn't feel like I had anything to worry about, but I was still nervous that something would come up on my MRI. I truly did feel okay, but I was still worried. What if they did find something?

"You don't need to worry," Luke said giving me his award winning smile, telling me it was going to be okay. I nodded trying to make myself believe him. He noticed how tense I was and put his arm around me before kissing my cheek.

"Let's go out, take your mind off of it." he said with a smile before standing up and extending his hand. I bit my lip for a second, thinking about it. I wasn't sure if I was feeling up to going out, but I took his hand reminding myself it would be fun. I needed to get out of the house anyways; I felt suffocated. I needed to let myself have some fun.

I slipped on my vans which were sitting next to the front door before locking the door behind me.

After putting on my seatbelt, I grabbed Luke's USB cord and plugged it into his phone to play music like I did every car ride. Luke had so much music on his phone, of all different genres, so we never got bored with the songs his phone supplied.

"Wait where are we going?" I asked as Luke kept his eyes on the road.

"First we'll stop and get something to eat," he smiled.

"My type of guy," I smiled back.

We decided to stop and get ice cream at our favorite homemade ice cream shop so we could hang out near the river that separated Virginia and DC.

I pushed the door to the ice cream shop open, as Luke followed behind me. "Thanks babe," I said with a smile. I took a bite of my oreo ice cream cone as Luke took a sip of his milkshake.

"You're welcome," he said with a smile before offering a sip to me.

We walked aimlessly around the small river, just enjoying our treats and each others presence. We both sat down on a bench looking out at the water. I let out breath, feeling myself relax.

"You okay?" Luke asked looking concerned. I hadn't been too talkative since we left the house.

"I'm just worried about the MRI. I'm scared," I admitted, looking down at my hands.

"Do you feel bad?" Luke asked looking at me. I shook my head no.

"Don't worry okay?" he said kissing my forehead.

I can't lie, Luke made me feel a little better even with his small gesture. I was still slightly worried, but I pushed it out of my mind for Luke.

Luke took my hand is his and looked down at me with a soft smile, "Come on, I know what to do to take your mind off of it," he said. I stood up and followed him to the car.

I sat down on the blanket Luke had laid out for us later that day. I looked around at the small beach scenery, Luke took me here often. Even though it was early December, I didn't mind sitting here on the cold beach because I was cuddled up to my boyfriend.

"I always come here to think, it let's me get away for a little while," Luke said sitting down next to me and slinging his arm around my shoulder. He was right, this did help me get my mind off of all the worries I had; I finally felt peace.

A majority of the night was spent in silence, comfortable silence. I replayed all the memories Luke and I had previously made here in my mind; I smiled at them.

"That morning when you told me the news," Luke said hesitantly, "I had never felt a bigger drop in my stomach." he admitted looking out at the water.

I didn't say anything, but he continued.

"I had never had to face the fear of losing someone. Someone I really cared about," he said meeting my eyes. I could see the sincerity in them.

"That's when I knew I really loved and cared about you, Bailey." he said locking his fingers with mine, leaving me at a loss for words.

I thought of something to say back, but nothing was coming to my mind. I leaned in to kiss him; actions spoke louder than words. He moved his hand to my neck, pulling me in closer to deepen the kiss. After a moment, I pulled away. Our foreheads were still touching, as I looked at his lips as he flashed me his award winning smile that made me melt. I watched his tongue lick his lips before playing with his lip ring, he would never know how much I loved when he did that.

Suddenly I yawned, not being able to hold it in. I chuckled, "Sorry."

He gave me a little laugh, "Come on I should get you home," he said grabbing my hand to pull me up.

"I don't want to leave you just yet," I admitted with a slight frown on my face. Luke had taken my mind off of everything. I was scared to go back home and feel worried all over again.

"We'll take the long way home," he said with a smug smile on his face.

That's just what we did. We took over an hour to get home when in reality it should have taken 30 minutes. I didn't mind, I enjoyed every second of my time with Luke, even if it meant driving aimlessly for hours.

"You know winter break is coming up very soon," my dad said as we watched a hockey game on tv after I got home.

"About a week," I said excited, I couldn't wait to get a 2 week break from school. I needed some time to just lay in bed and not worry about any of my responsibilities.

"We're gonna have a family lunch with the entire family December 22nd, at 2pm. Is Luke going to be there?" my dad asked which I knew was more of a statement. I know he wanted Luke to be there.

"I'll call him," I said getting up from the couch and making my way into my bedroom. I was just with him, but I was going to take advantage of my excuse to call him.

I walked into my room and shut the door behind me. I laid down on my bed and pulled my phone out of my back pocket then dialed Luke's number.

"Hello," he said cheerfully as he answered the phone.

"Hi, I have a question," I said smiling just hearing his voice.

"Shoot."

"Are you going to be around for Christmas? or are you going to Australia?" I asked. I had never asked Luke if he ever went back to visit his family in Australia, so I wasn't sure if he would be able to spend the holidays with me.

"No they're flying here," he said and I could imagine the smile on his face.

"Do you ever fly out there?" I asked curiously.

"I've only been back once since I moved here, but I plan on going next summer before I go off to college," he explained, "And I would want you to come."

I smiled hard, "I would."

"Why do you ask?"

"My dad wants you to come to our family lunch the day before Christmas eve."

"Your dad, not you?" he asked and I already knew he was pouting.

"Nope" I teased, "Just kidding of course I want you here."

"I have a question for you, are you ready?" he asked which made me sit up intrigued.

"I'll come to lunch, if you are okay with coming over for my family dinner that night?" he asked with a smile apparent in his voice.

I agreed to come, but I already felt nervous just thinking about meeting his family. I could only think about the chance of them not liking me.

We talked for a few minutes more before we exchanged our goodbyes. I was exhausted, so once I hung up with Luke I turned over and fell right asleep.
