Chapter 20

For the second day in a row, Casey and I were huddled together in a freezing cold ice rink cheering for our boyfriend's hockey team. They were winning with only a few minutes left.

I watched as Luke skated up and down the ice, his skates making sharp incisions into the ice surface.

I smiled as I watched Luke doing something he loved. I was happy I got to be here as he did so.

The loud buzzer sounded and Casey and I exchanged high fives before walking to the lobby. The room quickly filled with people who wanted to get warm from the previous hour spent in a room that's temperature was below freezing.

We were all chatting when the boys came out of the locker room with smiles on their faces.

"You both look happy," Casey said as Ashton put his arm around her. He wiped at his hair on his forehead, it was wet with sweat.

"We have some exciting news," Ashton said

"Oh yeah?" I questioned looking up at Luke. I could see the beads of sweat still placed on his forehead.

"Well," Luke hesitated, "We got into the regional tournament," he said, a smile spreading across his face. I pulled him in for a hug to congratulate him.

"That's amazing," I said looking from Luke to Ashton.

"The bad news is," Ashton began to say, of course there was bad news, "We leave in two days for Boston," he finished with a soft frown.

"We should go get some food and celebrate," Casey said after a few silent seconds keeping the spirits high. We all agreed and made our way to the parking lot.

Luke threw his stuff in the trunk before getting into the car.

"How long are you guys gone for?" I said with a small trace of sadness in my voice. He was leaving so soon without warning.

"A week," he said softly, starting his car. Don't get me wrong I was excited for Luke, but I was so use to having him around everyday. It would be weird not seeing him and rarely speaking to him for a whole week. I knew that I just had to suck it up and be happy for him.

"Well i'm happy for you," I said trying to put excitement into my voice.

"Thank you," he said looking at me, "How about tomorrow we do something nice since it's my last day here?" he asked grabbing my hand, lacing his fingers with mine.

"Okay," I said with a smile as Luke started the car.

We walked into five guys like we did after their first hockey game Casey and I attended. I smiled at the memories we had here; like when I hit Luke in the face with a paper football.

Luke brought the tray over to our table, handing me my burger.

"Cheeseburger with only ketchup," he said proudly remembering my order. I smiled proudly before thanking him.

All four of us ate and talked about the boys upcoming trip. They explained the teams they would be facing, and how they thought they had a good shot at winning some of their games. I was excited for them because this only came once in a lifetime, but I was upset how I would be missing it, and missing Luke. Nonetheless, I was happy for him.

I now knew I was falling for Luke quicker than I ever imagined I would. We had only been together for a short amount of time, but I could feel myself growing more attached to him day by day. I missed him already, and he hadn't even left yet. I was glad to have Casey by my side because there was someone that could relate to what I was going through.

After spending a good amount of the night at five guys, we all decided to head our seperate ways. The boys had to get home and tell their parents the news so they could begin to arrange their travel plans.

After exchanging our goodbyes with Casey and Ashton, Luke and I headed to my house.

"I'm sorry this is such short notice," Luke began, "Ya know, me leaving."

I nodded, "Don't apologize, Luke. It's okay, i'm excited you get to go," I said looking at him with a smile. He worked hard for hockey, and I was glad it was going to all pay off. I looked over at him, he had his eyes focused on the road.

"So what do you want to do tomorrow?" I asked remembering we were gonna spend the day together before he had to leave the following morning.

"I have a little something planned," he said looking at me with a small smug smile pulling at his lips. I smiled back as we pulled into my driveway.

"I would come in, but I have to go tell my parents," Luke said with a small amount of sadness in his eyes.

"I understand," I said grabbing his hand. He smiled before leaning over to kiss me.

"Sweet dreams," he said kissing my cheek as I got out of the car making my way into the house.

I made my way into my room, throwing myself onto my bed. I waited a minute before walking into the kitchen to make myself some hot chocolate; It was still warm outside, but that didn't stop me.

I grabbed my mug and walked into my room setting it down on my bedside table. I walked over to my closet and grabbed some comfy clothes to put on for the night. I crawled into bed grabbing my laptop and opening Netflix; I decided to spend the night watching movies and relaxing.

-

I woke up the next morning with a slight headache. I groaned as I pulled myself out of bed and made my way to the medicine cabinet to grab some advil.

I walked to the kitchen and took out the orange juice, pouring some into a cup before washing my pill down with it.

I looked at the clock on my microwave, 12:30. I walked over to the freezer and pulled a pizza to put in the oven for lunch. I waited to hear the beep from the oven letting me know it was preheated before putting it in.

After eating, I made my way back into the kitchen to clean up the small mess I made, and to do the dishes that were left in the sink.

Seeing as it was only 1:15, I curled up onto the couch flipping through TV channels waiting for Luke to call. I was excited to spend the day with him, but I knew that it would be sad to say goodbye to him tonight.

I still had a small headache, so I got comfy, letting myself go to sleep once again.

-

I feel the soft touch of Luke's fingertips running against my arm, before his warm lips were pressed against mine. My eyes flutter open, and I smiled into the kiss.

"Good morning," Luke smiled down at me. I sat up and looked over at the clock, 5:02.

"More like good evening," I smiled back. I was going to ask how he got in, but I remembered he knew where the spare key was hidden outside.

Luke grabbed my hand and pulled me up "Come on get dressed," he says pushing me towards my room.

"Wait what?" I say letting out a small giggle and resisting his push "Dressed? What are we gonna do?" I asked remembering today was going to be our last night together before he was gone for a whole week.

"I'm not going to tell you! Just get ready!" Luke exclaimed eagerly.

"What am I supposed to wear if you won't tell me where we are going?" I said standing in my bedroom door.

"Uh, okay. Wear something that's comfortable, but will be okay if it gets a bit chilly." Luke said vaguely.

"That helps" I laughed at Luke before sticking out my tongue.

"Hurry up Parker," he said sternly as I caught a glimpse of him rolling those perfect blue eyes he has and letting out a small laugh as I shut my door.

I walked over and opened my closet door to look at my options before letting out a huff. I pulled out a pair of jean shorts, A flowy long sleeve, and a pair of my vans, one of my everyday outfits. I looked in the mirror for a long second before shrugging and telling myself that my appearance was going to have to do. I brushed out my knotty hair and apply a small amount of makeup on.

"You take foooooreeeevvverrr," Luke yelled from the living room. I laughed to myself and rolled my eyes.

"Impatient much?" I asked walking out of my room.

"Yep," Luke said wrapping his arms around my waist. I put my hands on his shoulders lightly. I could only wrap my arms around his neck if I get on my tip toes due to his tall lanky body.

"Let's go come on," he said placing a light kiss on my cheek.

"So can I know where we are going?" I asked buckling my seatbelt.

"Nope," Luke said popping the 'p'. I groaned, knowing that pestering him won't do me any good. I just decided to let him do what he's planned. I'm not good with surprises, I find it hard to act how I truly feel. It's just that surprises obviously take me by such surprise that I have no idea what to say, and people think I just don't care, when in reality, I just don't know what to do.

After a long drive, we finally park and get out of the car. Luke walked over to the back of the car and pulled stuff out of the trunk. When I look down at what he has, I see that it's a basket and a blanket. I smile at the idea of what he's doing. It may not be something extravagant, but it's something small, and the small things are the best things. They are the things that matter in this world.

Luke looked over at me and smiled, his cheeks slightly flushing. I grabbed the blanket out of his left hand, and used my free hand to grab his, interlocking our fingers. I loved this feeling, having Luke by my side with our fingers intertwined together like nothing can break us apart.

I looked over at him subtly, studying his face. The way his lips curve, and the way his dimple forms when he moves his lips into even the tiniest smile. The light in his eyes has to be my overall favorite, the way that his eyes light up when he's happy and smiles. There's no better feeling than causing that smile on his face.

Luke led me down a small path before stopping at a spot on the beach. It's just above the water, where we can see the sun perfectly. This was the beach he had taken me to before, but I didn't recognize we were here at first because he took a different route.

"I thought it would be cool to watch the sunset over the water," he said smiling and laying out the blanket. I remember the time he brought me here to watch the stars, I smiled at the memory.

"I brought some things to snack on if you want," he said.

"Thank you Luke," I said with sincerity in my voice.

"Thank me for what?" He asked, acting like this is nothing special.

"For this. This is so nice of you, and just thank you for being here with me. Just thank you for everything. I can't put it in words now, but one day I will," I smile trying not to be too cliché.

Luke smiles widely, showing those dimples that I fall in love with more and more every time I see them. He puts a finger under my chin, and I stand on my tip toes, and he leans in to kiss me softly.

"Anything for you," he whispers softly with his forehead against mine.

We talked for a little while, and I found myself telling him about my family. I tell him about my parents divorce and my childhood. He asked why I didn't move in with my mom when she left, so I explained how she was too much of an alcoholic to care for me. She started drinking at a young age, and it stayed that way. She preferred parties rather than being close with her kids. Some people just aren't good parents.

"Please don't say you're sorry," I said laughing nervously running a hand through my hair. I didn't like when people apologized for things like that, I saw it almost as a blessing. I think my parents divorce made me a strong person. I had the perfect examples of what not to do with my life, right in front of me.

"I won't. You've been through a lot, it's pretty inspiring," Luke said looking over at me. I nodded not having anything else to say.

Silence fell between us as we watched the sunset and I have never seen anything more perfect. The way the sunsets over the water line. The way Luke looks with the sunset glowing in the reflection of his eyes. The red snapback he's wearing that makes him seem so average.

But that's what's crazy, Luke is no average boy. He is everything to me. I scold myself silently for saying that about him, because he has the ability to walk away from me whenever he pleases and then my 'everything' would be gone. We have only been together for about two months, but he makes me happy in the saddest times, and he gives me butterflies every time I'm near him. He makes me happy that I am me, and that I live the life I do. He makes me feel loved, and I know that I love this boy.

I contemplate telling him or not, I didn't want him to think we were moving too fast, or that it was too soon for me to tell him I love him, but there's a difference of loving someone and being in love with them.

I loved Casey and Ally. Just like I learned to love Ashton, Michael and Calum; but I was not in love with any of them.

In that moment I knew two things. I love Luke Hemmings, and that I was beginning to fall in love with him.

The sun was gone, and we held each other in the darkness; my head on his chest, and his fingers running through my hair. The hushed words and hums coming out of his mouth rang through my ears.

*Making all our plans in the santa cruz sand that night.

Thought I had you in the palm of my hand that night.

You had me wrapped around your finger.

I'm wrapped around your finger.*

I had never heard him sing these words before and I wanted to ask about them. I wasn't sure if they were from a song he liked, or a song he wrote, but I didn't want to question him and ruin the perfect moment we were having, so I let them slip from my mind.

"I love you ," I say as I slide my hand into Luke's hair, I stared at his blue eyes for a second before placing my lips on his softly.

He looked surprised as he pulled back, shocked at my words. I knew for many people saying you loved someone was a big deal, but to me it was saying that you were in love that was important.

He chuckled nervously looking down, "I love you too," he said meeting my eyes with his. I smiled as he held me closer, watching the stars becoming brighter in the sky above us.
