Chapter 6
Chance moved several more boxes but still had a ways to go in getting everything moved in. He had discovered something about himself during his packing. He had become quite the pack rat. He saved everything.
He sat the last box that he had brought up on the kitchen counter. He knew that he didn't have time for another load. He wanted to try and talk to Tim before it got too late.
He grabbed his ID badge and slipped it around his neck. Grabbing his cap, he headed down the hallway when he meets a very tired looking Nate.
"Wow, hard day?" Chance chuckles.
"The worst." Nate chuckles and shakes his head. "I actually had to break up a fight today."
"Seriously? Holy cow. What happened?" Chance asks. "Who was fighting?"
"Adam and Harry." Nate answers.
"Harry? I don't guess I've met him yet." Chance says.
"Oh, trust me, you will. Harry Styles. He likes to cause trouble." Nate says shaking his head. "He loves picking on Tim."
"Tim? What the hell happened?" Chance asks as he felt his anger rising.
"I'm really not sure. I wasn't there when it all started. Jenika called me over the radio and said she needed help. Apparently Harry did something to Tim. Tim is just not the type to take up for himself. I guess it has something to do with the abuse of his dad." Nate says. "Anyways, Avi and Austin pulled Tim back to his room while Adam took up the fight."
"Well, I'm just glad that Tim's friends were there." Chance says.
"Yeah." Nate says and then chuckles. "Adam was kicking Harry's ass too."
"Good." Chance laughs. "See ya later. I think I'll go check on Tim."
"Uh huh." Nate answers with a smirk before heading to his room.
Chance takes the steps two at a time. His boots echoing in the stairwell.
"111. 111." He repeats to himself as he checks the numbers on the doors. "Where the hell is 111?"
He turns up a hallway.
"119. 118. 117. I'm on the right track now." He chuckles quietly to himself. "111, here we go."
He taps lightly on the door.
"Come in?" Austin answers.
Tim was lying in the bed on his side, clutching something to his chest and crying. Austin was standing by the bed and Avi was sitting on the bad. Both with sad faces.
"Guys? You mind leaving us alone. I'd like to talk to Tim. Maybe you can go check on Adam." Chance says as he walks into the room.
"We can't check on Adam. He's being punished." Austin answers.
"Punished? How?" Chance asks. He had no idea that the patients here were ever punished.
"He has to spend twelve hours locked in his room." Avi answers as he stands from the bed. "Harry has to stay locked in his room for twenty-four hours cause he was the one who started it."
"I totally agree, Virgil." Austin nods.
"What did he say?" Chance asks politely.
"Virgil said that they need to lock Harry up and throw away the key." Austin answers and heads for the door. "Come on, Avi. Let's go watch some t.v, see what your buddies are up to."
"Everything will be alright, Photograph." Avi says as he rubs Tim on the shoulder. "Don't cry. Maybe Ms. Tina will get you another one."
Avi follows Austin out the door and Chance closes it behind them.
Chance walks back over to the bed and quietly sits down.
"Can you tell me what happen?" Chance asks softly as he rubs Tim on the back of the head. "We're alone. You can talk to me."
"He broke it. He knocked my camera out of my hands and broke it." Tim whispers through his sobs. "The only thing that gave me happiness in this place."
"Can I see it?" Chance asks.
Tim sits up, facing the bearded man and hands him the broken camera that he had been clutching to his chest.
"Definitely no fixing this one." Chance says as he lays the broken camera aside.
Tim sobs and covers his face with his hands.
"Aww, come mere." Chance says as he pulls the distraught man into a hug.
"Why did he have to go and break it. He knew how much I loved my camera." Tim says quietly as he sobs onto Chance's shoulder.
"Shhhh, stop crying, please." Chance says, rubbing the brunette on the back. "I have plenty of cameras. I'll let you have one of mine."
"Really?" Tim asks as he raises his head and tries to wipe his ongoing tears.
"Really. But only if you stop crying." Chance says with a soft smile.
Tim smiles slightly as he wipes his eyes with the palms of his hands.
"Can I ask you something?" Chance asks. Tim nods and he continues. "Why won't you talk to anybody?"
"My dad always punished me whenever I talked. He actually put duck tape over my mouth several times. So it's just become a part of life, I guess. Scared I'm going to get punished if anyone hears me talking." Tim answers in a soft quiet voice. "And besides, I'm afraid if anyone hears me talking, I'll be released from here. And I don't have anywhere to go. But then, I have other issues also."
"Really? Like what?" Chance asks.
"I have seizures sometimes. I have anxiety attacks. I've, uh, I've been known to throw tantrums." Tim says as he runs a hand through his hair.
"Like earlier?" Chance asks with a smirk. "When you thought Heather was my girlfriend?"
"Yeah." Tim answers, hanging his head. "Well, it pissed me off."
"Why?" Chance asks with a slight chuckle.
"I had been sitting on that hard-ass floor for two hours waiting on you to come back." Tim says. "And then when you finally show up, you have her with you."
"I was going to introduce you to her but you ran." Chance says.
"I panicked." Tim replies with a shrug.
"You had been waiting on me for two hours?" Chance asks.
"Actually longer than that. I was just sitting in the hall for two hours." Tim says as he bites his bottom lip. "I even put on some of my best clothes."
"Why?" Chance asks, tilting his head.
"Isn't it obvious, Chance?" Tim asks. "You're the only person I talk to. I like you. A lot."
Chance could only stare into the chocolate colored brown eyes. Heather was right. Chance smiles as he reaches up and brushes Tim's hair behind his ear.
Tim's eyes drift down to Chance's lips. He slowly begins to lean in. They both close their eyes as their lips are just inches apart.
"Tim?" Tina calls from outside his door as she knocks.
