Chapter 12: Snakes

"Today we're playing a tag game of sorts," Jared told us when we all had gathered outside the cabins. The group as a whole looked quite fatigued and unexcited, but a few people seemed to be at least considering the game as potentially fun.

Tennielle muttered, "We just played tag!" and I nodded. I couldn't help feeling a little disappointed. Throughout the morning, I had been anticipating some awesome activity that I would always remember doing.

"I'll divide you into three teams."

Three? I thought, startled. My hopes skyrocketed again, grabbing onto my previous excitement.

"There will not be any team captains. Everyone is expected to be fair and help their team."

I already knew that wasn't going to happen, but it was alright for Jared to be optimistic, I supposed. I turned toward Tennielle and held up my crossed fingers. She grinned, then showed me her crossed fingers.

We were counted off, and predictably Tennielle and I were in separate groups. Akdani was in the third group, with neither of us, but luckily for him and unfortunately for me, Riko was in my team. I noticed that Akdani's team was significantly the largest, while mine was in the middle and Tennielle's was smallest. I waved to Tennielle as the teams separated, and she grinned and raised her fists in a mock fighting pose.

"Each team represents an animal," Jared told us. He pointed to Tennielle's team. "You guys are the falcons. You're the top of the food chain. That means you can tag anyone from the other teams." Then he pointed to Akdani's team. "You're the mice. You can get tagged by anyone from the other two teams. However, since your team is largest this should even out." Finally, he turned to my team. "You're the snakes. You can tag mice, but you can be tagged by falcons."

We took a moment to get familiar with our roles before he continued. "If you get tagged by someone on another team, you join their team. At the end, the team with the most people on it wins."

I adjusted my feet, then adjusted them again, squirming with excitement. I had always loved tag games, and this one sounded interesting.

"Falcons, come up to get a blue bandana. If your bandana isn't showing on you, you can't tag people."

Tennielle's group made their way up, and they seemed at least a little enthusiastic compared to how they had been at the start of the talk. My group was called up next to get green bandanas, followed by the mice for red. Then we lined up.

"Mice, you are free to run." My heart jumped with nervous excitement as the mouse team looked around, startled, then dashed into the fog. I heard their footsteps splash away, each one a loud slap.

Jared waited about thirty seconds before abruptly announcing that the snakes could go. I started for a second, then dashed into the mist, careful to keep my shoes on.
