Chapter 3: Visiting
" Mother, sing for us a song from your homeland." Kilian asked as they made their way down the path to Mirkwood upon their ponies. Amanda would sing her songs from her home to her children when they were babies. But they still make her sing them to this day.
" Not right now darling." Amanda said to him.
" Yeah come on. Sing us a song." Dwalin yelled out happily.
" If you don't. I will!" Bofur yelled at her. Amanda chuckled and gave in.
"I don't know if you can see. The changes that have come over me. In these last few days I've been afraid. That I might drift away." She sang the words softly as she thought back to her homeland. Scotland and its beautiful high hills and low valleys.
"So I've been telling old stories, singing songs. That make me think about where I came from. And that's the reason why I feel. So far away today." Amanda's eyes brimmed with tears as she though back to her city, Edinburgh. The castle standing tall on its rock in the centre of the city. Along with its busy streets.
"And, let me tell you that I love you, That I think about you all the time. Caledonia's calling me, And now I'm going home." Home, her house. A single tear fell as she remembered her family she had left behind all those years ago. Her younger brother, her mother and father. Do they think she is dead? Is she missing or did she even exisit in that world anymore?
"If I should become a stranger, You know that it would make me more than sad, Caledonia's been everything I've ever had." She finished quietly.
" Beautiful as ever." Bofur smiled to her gently. Amanda quickly brushed away a tear and smiled.
" You miss your home don't you?" Balin asked as he had felt the sadness in his singing. Amanda looked down and sighed.
" Yes. I do. I miss my mother, my father. My brother." She said saddly. Kilian looked to the ground upset. In a way feeling guilty about his mothers sadness.
" But this is my home now. I have my own family here that I love with all my heart. Not only that, but I have my children and I would do it again in a heart beat." Amanda smiled as she looked back at her son and daughter with a large smile.
" And we love you." Kilian smiled happily, his smile the exact image of Kili's.
" We're here." Bofur shouted happily as they pulled to a stop just outside a small house. The door flung open as a small girl ran out and over to the ponies.
" Auntie Amanda!" She yelled happily. Amanda slipped off her pony as she picked up the small girl with raven black hair and blue eyes.
" Annika. You look beautiful!" Amanda smiled to the young one as she stood up and looked to the door as Fiona stepped out. They rushed over to each other and embraced happily.
" How are you?" Fiona asked her.
" I am well. What about yourself and Thorin? You are both doing well." She asked Fiona as she nodded and smiled leading the group inside their house. They walked in and sat down at the table.
" Where is Thorin?" Amanda asked Fiona as she finished cleaning up the kitchen.
" He is cutting firewood out the back." Fiona said and Amanda nodded and headed out back to find Thorin swinging an axe to cut wood.
" Watch yourself old man! You might strain your back out." Amanda yelled to him with a smile. Thorin looked her and smiled as he dropped his axe. His hair was now almost completely grey except for a few strips that were left black.
" Amanda! It is good to see you again." Thorin smiled as they embraced each other in a tight hug. They chuckled as laughed as they looked to the axe and firewood.
" It's not as easy as it use to be." He whispered lowly to her. Amanda smiled placing a hand on his arm. She unclasped her cloak and handed it to him after placing her quiver and bow on the ground. She untied her swords and dropped them as well.
" Amanda please." Thorin asked as Amanda rolled her sleeves up. Amanda brushed him off and picked up the axe. She put a block of wood onto the stool and lifted the large axe, slicing the wood in half easily.
" Thorin please. I never get to do anything close to this back in Erebor. I want to." She muttered to him as she continued to chop the wood.
" Plus your an old man now! You need help from time to time." Amanda said as she dropped the axe. Thorin looked at her and raise an eyebrow at her.
" Oh really now? If I was an old man could I do this?" Thorin yelled running and tackling Amanda, but she was prepare and fought him off. Bofur watched through the window with a smile.
" Fiona. They are at it again." He called as he watched Thorin and Amanda wrestling in the garden. Fiona rolled her eyes at their childless.
" Just leave them, its nothing new." Fiona said to him.
" Its good to see Thorin in good spirits." Balin said with a smile as they all sat down at the table quietly. Fiona was humming softly a small tune.
"Whats that tone?" Bofur asked not recognizing the song. Fiona smiled and began singing the song. (play the song) Bofur sat down listening to her singing little da dums in carefully place notes. Just then Amanda burst through the door and sang 'da das' as well. Then it became some sort of argument between them in this unknown language. They men and children clipped as Fiona and Amanda chased each other around the table. They then stopped and stared each other and the clapping stopped as well. For a few moments everyone was still and silent. Then Amanda began singing and again they sang over each other fighting once again. Then they stopped facing away from each other.
"Look how the light of the town, the lights of the town are shining now, Tonight I'll be dancing around, I'm off on the road to Galway now." Amanda happily as she dance around.
"Look how she's off on the town, She's off on a search for sailors though, There's fine fellas here to be found, She's never been one to stay at home." Fiona sang as she danced as well. Everyone cheered and clapped at their happiness.
"Home you'll go and it's there you'll stay, And you've work to do in the morning, Give up your dream of going away, Forget your sailors in Galway." They both sang against each other smiling.
"Téir abhaile riú, téir abhaile riú, Téir abhaile riú Mhearai, Téir abhail gus fan sa bhaile, Mar tá do mhargadh déanta" They sang in a different language to any of middle earth they had revealed it to be Gaelic, an ancient lanugage of Scotland. Their homeland.
"Come now and follow me down, Down to the lights of Galway where, There's fine sailors walking the town, And waiting to meet the ladies there." Amanda sang to Fiona as if she was trying to get her to do something that she is reluctant to do.
"Watch now he'll soon be along, He's finer than any sailor so, Come on now pick up your spoons, He's waiting to hear you play them." Fiona said as Amanda picked up two spoon and played them against her leg as everyone yelled 'WHOOO!' Together smiling happily.
"Here today and she's gone tomorrow, And next she's going to Galway, Jiggin' around and off to town, And won't be back until morning." They both sang still jumping and chasing each other.
"Téir abhaile riú, téir abhaile riú, Téir abhaile riú Mhearai, Téir abhail gus fan sa bhaile, Mar tá do mhargadh déanta." they sang with smiled everyone clapped along to their beat. They continued to sing and dance until the sun was well beyond the horizon and the moon was high in the sky.
